i'm dara brown news happening overnight... columbia fire crews responded to a house fire on nearview avenue in northeast richland county. right now information is limited, but we have heard that people inside the home were able to make it out safely. this is in the woodfield park subdivision right behind richland northeast high school. we'll be checking in with columbia investigators to learn more on what started that fire. also overnight -- a boil water advisory issued for people living along nursery hill road in lexington county. the affected area is between woodvalley drive and westcott road. a 10-inch water line break was reported in that area last night. a wis viewer sent in this picture of water flowing on the road way there. if you live in the area under the advisory, you will need to boil your water for a full minute before drinking or cooking until further notice. while you were sleeping overnight -- you likely heard strong winds continuing to whip through the midlandsds winds are still very high this

a home's fence was flattened on patterson road in columbia. over in lexington, joseph hunt's truck and home dodged a pine tree. back over in columbia, this home on gordon street near c.a. johnson high school wasn't so lucky. needless to say, sce&g's been busy. "we've been working since knowing that the storm was coming to get our crews ready." and spokesperson ginny jones says there have crews ready." and spokesperson ginny jones says there have been plenty of outages to fix. "there have been a number of incidents causing outages. richland and lexington county were particularly hard hit, and we've been working all around the state to try to restore outages as they've come up." jones says the company has re-routed crews from other counties. she says some from sumter will be headed here thursday morning. "what you're looking at is a lot of single incidents at different homes, so some of those outages will take some more time to repair than, for instance, a large incident

customers back on at one time." that was chad mills reporting. jones says that's why sce&g trims limbs throughout the year -- to reduce the damage in windy situations like we're seeing right now. it was a close call for one taxi driver yesterday afternoon due to those winds about. while driving down millwood avenue in columbia-- a large tree limb windshield. the driver said he thinks the high winds caused the branch to fall. he says he's lucky he walked away ... because that branch left his cab a wreck. after crews cleared the scene, the car had to be towed away. the storm system is being blamed for the death of one man in darlington county. the county coroner says the man, identified as michael gaines, senior died after being hit by a falling tree branch while he was walking on gilchrist road in darlington. someone nearby called 9-1-1 right after gaineses was hit and pinned to the ground by the branch. "right before the incident, the tree broke and i guess he didn't know which way to run and the tree fell on him."

stopped along the road near his home to remove storm debris from the roadway when he was hit. several cities and towns across the south will still be cleaning up after two stormy days in the including the victim in darlington county. 4 people were killed in virginia which saw significant damage last night from tornadoes. a woman whose house was ruined in last fall's floods now has a newly renovated home. jennifer gneiser walked into her newly- renovated house in pine glen yesterday. a national disaster recovery organization with local partners called the "rebuild together" initiative came together to fix it up. jennifer says she's been apart from her two teenage sons as crews worked on the house. "i can instill now in my children a sense of giving and that we can move forward as a family with that sense of giving and repay it that way." jennifer's home is one of 12 homes that the "rebuild together" initiative is working to restore in the

state employees could be in for some bigger paychecks. the house budget writing committee approved a new 7 and a half billion dollar spending plan wednesday. under the plan, income taxes would be cut and most state employees would get a 1-percent pay raise. millions of dollars going to k through 12 education also includes a 2-percent cost-of-living pay bump for teachers. 250-million dollars would also be allocated for roadwork, the committee hopes to wrap up its work today. the full house and senate must approve the plan before the budget takes effect on july 1st. a new initiative by public and private groups across south carolina will work to stop cyber hackers. governor nikki haley attended the official launch of the "sc cyber" program at usc wednesday. the goal is to secure the state's cyber infrastructure by training government workers, business people, and small business owners about security techniques. right now, about 23- hundred people in south carolina work in the cyber security field. the goal is to grow that number with this new

with just two days remaining until the democratic primary in clinton is not taking any lead in the polls for granted. she hit up several campaign stops in west columbia yesterday, where she spoke to the alpha kappa alpha sorority...and in sumter, where she held a town hall at morris college. clinton told the crowd she wants to unite the country. she also criticized the republican candidates--saying their proposals would take the country backwards. "we're going to go out to talk to people, one on one and in groups, about what's in it for them to have a president to follow president obama who's gonna continue to build on the progress we've made and to continue to make life better, to make a real difference in how people are living and working." and today, former president bill clinton returns to the midlands to campaign for hillary. as part of a get out the vote push that will take him from the upstate to the lowcountry, clinton will stop through winnsboro today. he'll speak at the fairfield middle school gymnasium at 7:45 tonight. his tour will continue tomorrow

and bluffton. despite a double digit deficit in the polls here...senator bernie sanders says he is not giving up on south carolina. but wednesday he did leave the palmetto state to focus on several other upcoming contests. after spending part of the day in columbia wednesday, sanders took off for a campaign swing of missouri and oklahoma as he tries to regain momentum. he said he plans to win some states and lose others -- but that he is in the race to win. "we have waged a very, very vigorous campaign. we have picked up a lot of support and we have closed the gap very, very significantly. but this, from day one, was going to be a very difficult state for us." sanders is expected to return to south carolina tomorrow for last-minute campaigning ahead of the primary on saturday. south carolina democrats may not recognize one name on the ballot in saturday's primary. chicago businessman willie wilson is running for president as a champion of

americans. he spoke with wis-news 10 here at our studios. wilson's a self-made millionaire who worked his way up from poverty in louisiana to running an international medical supply company and his own gospel radio show. he says he has plenty of experience running a business and dealing with international issues. as for the experience of washington veterans like bernie sanders and hillary clinton, williams says that kind of experience has "caused" the problems america has today. "this country should have economic empowerment to reflect the citizens of america. this country should have free education. if cuba and china can have free education, why not us? this country should have forgiveness of student debt loans. this country should have a public policy, public education, that should reflect equal opportunity under the law. this country should have equal work, equal pay for females.

top stories this morning-- people in the southeast and east coast are in recovery mode after severe thunderstorms and tornadoes destroyed homes and knocked out power. it's reported eight people have died in the storms that left a path of destruction from louisiana to pennsylvania. we're tracking the latest in the alert center this morning. that severe weather caused power outages across the carolina. sce&g reported more than 2,800 outages late wednesday, with most in richland and lexington counties. as of this morning that number is down to a little over 300. duke energy reports as of 8pm wednesday they had 96-thousand customers without power in north and south carolina. as you get ready to head out this morning, you will need to hold on to your hats. those strong winds are still an issue around the a wind advisory will be in effect for much of the day. let's check in with tim miller on this friday eve. he has your first alert forecast as you're waking up.

morning. sce&g has been battling power outages in numerous spots, and there could be more today. our michal higdon is live in downtown columbia where crews have been working overnight to get power restored -- michal? i'm just down the street from the corner of laurel and marion street where the intersection is still blocked off because of a downed traffic light. we have video from just a couple of hours ago and you can see tree limbs and debris around the traffic debris around the traffic light at laurel and marion -- and crews have put up barricades for a full block radius so if you're headed this way, be mindful of that. much of this immediate area near the laurel and marion lost power yesterday because of those high winds

the south carolina democratic primary, and candidates will notably absent from the midlands today. despite some campaign events planned -- bernie sanders and hillary clinton will be turning much of their attention to states in the march 1st super tuesday contests. yesterday, clinton worked on gaining more supporters here in the midlands. she made several campaign stops in west columbia yesterday -- and also spoke to supporters in sumter at morris college. clinton's message centered on uniting the country. "this campaign is all about bringing us together to solve our problems. it's about putting forth real solutions that will make a difference in people's lives." during the rally, clinton also took the opportunity to attack republican rival ted cruz over the issue of social security. she also spoke on the issue of winning over a red state such as south to attack republican rival ted south carolina. senator bernie sanders is focused on lifting south carolina families out of sanders held an early morning campaign news conference on wednesday-- hoping pick up some momentum before

moved through our area. utility crews have been working around the clock to clean up the damage left behind from the wind and restore numerous power outages around the midlands. our michal higdon joins us live from downtown columbia with an update on outages reported there -- michal? as of a couple of hours ago, several blocks around bull street had their power restored after going several hours without it. however, an entire block radius in every direction is blocked from laurel and marion street this morning after a traffic light collapsed from yesterday's high winds. take a look. there are downed tree limbs near the traffic light and one side of it is hanging very close to the ground.

near 60 as we mentioned those strong winds are still causing some problems around the midlands this morning. sce&g has been battling power outages in numerous spots, and there could be more today. our michal higdon is live in downtown columbia whehe crews have been working overnight to get power restored -- michal? i'm just down the street from the corner of laurel and marion street where the intersection is still blocked off because of a downed traffic light. we have video from just a couple of hours ago and you can see tree limbs and debris around the traffic light at laurel and marion -- and crews have put up barricades for a full block radius so if you're headed this way, be mindful of that. much of this immediate area near the laurel and marion lost power yesterday because of those high winds we've been experiencing. sce&g crews have been working extremely hard, even overnight, to get power turned back on for thousands which saw sporadic outages from yesterday's storms. ginny jones with sce&g says

floods now has a newly renovated home. jennifer gneiser walked into her newly- renovated house in pine glen yesterday. a national disaster recovery organization with local partners called the "rebuild together" initiative came together to fix it up. jennifer says she's been apart from her two teenage sons as crews worked on the house. "i can instill now in my children a sense of giving and that we can move forward as a family with that sense of giving and repay it that way." jennifer's home is one of 12 homes that the "rebuild together" initiative is working to restore in the wake of the flood. sce and g is working to provide
