they opened their doors yesterday as a warming shelter. were told it was a very busy night here--and the group expects it to stay busy in the coming days. work to prepare the basement of the chapel at 81st and lapham in west allis began yesterday afternoon. they encourage folks without a home to join them inside and escape the cold-- this group is one of several in southeast wisconsin-- making sure people stay the impact 2-1-1 call center--resource specialists connect callers with the help they're looking for. assisting many in finding shelter. with more predicted cold--headed this way--each group gets ready for what's ahead. so that this dangerous weather--is safer for some of the area's most vulnerable. 12:34 hangout and keep warm, maybe play some games, eat some

some resources. the 'feeding his flock' emergency shelter will continue to operate as long as temperatures are 10 degrees or below. if you or someone you know needs shelter, call 2-1-1. you can be connected to needed resources. reporting live in west allis, julie collins. fox 6 news. milwaukee city officials addressing the public on the cold. they're reminding residents how 'hypothermia is a life threatening situation and it occurs when body tempertures drop too low causing shivirning drowsiness and confusion.' 'the cold wind chills will cause frost bite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.' city officials say the most vulnerable are children, the elderly and the homeless. on average there can be between 200 and 250 people living on the streets in milwaukee.

transportation has put out an alert ahead of this weekend weather. very cold temperatures and heavy snow could make for dangerous driving conditions. angelica has more on how you can stay safe on the roads. the d-o-t says with the low temperatures and high winds...there is a high potential for black ice -- which can be mistaken for wet pavement. here's what you need to look out for the most. any pavement that looks dark...wet...or like new asphalt. be extra careful in low-lying areas that may have standing water or run off from nearby snow banks. you also under bridges and overpasses...or any roadway that is shaded from the sun. the d-o-t advises against travel this weekend unless absolutely necessary. they say if you are traveling -- remember to go slow...and leave plenty of room for stopping..and give emergency vehicles plenty of space. and be sure to stay ahead of the cold - and snow - with the fox 6 storm center app -- and get a live look at the radar. it's free for apple

throughout the state will be out in force to combat drunk driving starting today through new years. 24 o-w-i task force teams will be on the lookout for impaired drivers. overtime for task force officers is covered by federal funding. officials say be smart if you plan on drinking over the holidays...like taking a cab or a bus. there are also several rideshare options available. the d-o-t does offer a free app that has a "find a ride" feature -- which help you locate alternative transportation. if you'd like to learn more about yourp more information on our website fox6 now dot com. three state lawmakers are calling on milwaukee county sheriff david clarke to resign. state senator chris larson and state reps jonathan brostoff and christine sinicki released a statement - calling the sheriff's office "grossly mismanaged." four people, including an infant born to an inmate have died in the county jail since april. the lawmakers say these deaths are tied directly to clarkes lack of supervision. his spokeswoman, fran mclaughlin ?released a statement saying the

civilians hoping to flee aleppo come under fire. syrian activists say pro-government forces have shot at ambulances trying to leave the city. at least three people are injured. a planned evacuation was morning...with buses and ambulance ready to take the injured out of aleppo. a ceasefire deal between the rebels and the syrian government collapsed yesterday... with both sides blaming the other for its failure. the senate foreign relations committee plans to hold an open hearing next month that will examine possible meddling by russia in the presidential election. meanwhile -- the agency that oversees u.s. intelligence says it will release more information to the public about russia's attempts to influence the election once a review ordered by president obama is

closing arguments expected to get underway today in the murder trial of dylann roof. the 22-year-old is accused of shooting nine people at the emanuel a-m-e church in charleston on june 17th, 20-15. he is being tried in federal court on 33 charges, including obstruction of the practice of a religion roof faces a possible death sentence if he's convicted. but, his attorneys say roof would be willing to plead guilty if prosecutors dropped their pursuit of the death penalty. a rural colorado school district will now allow teachers and other staff to carry guns on campus... after undergoing training... to protect students. the hanover school district passed the measure last night. the decision came on the fourth

in the wake of that shooting -- other school districts in colorado, texas, oklahoma, and california have also allowed teachers to carry weapons. heavy snow and winds hitting upstate new york. but there was also something else mixed in with the storm... thunder and lightning thunder-snow reported in buffalo last night. the national weather service also reporting the city saw up to three times. the wind also making near white-out conditions. authorities have told parents to expect delays in school bus routes this morning. and in oregon -- avalanches forced authorities to shut down a highway. oregon state police say u-s 20 is closed in both directions near the hoodoo ski area. officials are working on cleaning up the mess. the first avalanche measured 150-feet wide - yesterday afternoon. another hit in the same area a short time later. no injuries have been reported. and frigid conditions in eugene, oregon causing trees to topple

continues until 10am with wind chills likely in the 10 to 20 degrees below zero. record- matching 1-point-6 million dollar fine for violating a rule prohibiting long tarmac delays... the u-s transportation department says it found american had allowed a number of domestic flights to remain on the tarmac for more than 3 hours... without allowing passengers an opportunity to deplane. the fine matched the amount that was assessed against southwest airlines in 2015 for violating the same rule. yahoo now says that more than one billion accounts may have been affected in
