evening to watch, pam. as you know, those numbers are virtually unheard of today. phillip stewart, abc news. >> pretty incribble. thank you so much for that. a fire out of prince george's county fire apartment has claimed the life of a child. the flames broke out late yesterday afternoon in the 5400 block of 56th place and riverdale heights. a 7:00-year-old and his 5-year-old brother were trapped inside. >> from the outside, you couldn't see the damage of the oak ridge apartment. >> her son came over and said somebody's house is on fire. >> but the smoke and flames that ignited inside a first floor apartment were enough to trap two boys, five and 7 years old inside. >> a lot of people in the neighborhood tried to get in to help the kids, but the fire was too much smoke to help them. >> one found the two boys in

grave condition. >> found two kids in the back bedroom, passed them out to the guys. >> i see them coughing picking him up, but the other little boy, i didn't see him doing nothing. >> as the boys were transported to the hospital center, neighbors recall how the youngsters had been left alone by their father. >> this kid could have been in there doing all types of things. >> they also addressed concerns about the fire response time. some believe it took 15 minutes for firefighters to arrive. >> there were too many people trying to get into that apartment for it to be four minutes. >> i can understand their frustration. but, in reality, we were dispatched, arrived on the scene within four minutes. >> firefighters say they were dispatched here aut 5:12 on friday evening, say they arrived at 5:17. apparently the father went out for a short period of time, came back in, tried to get inside the

apartment, was pushed back by the smoke. certainly a lot of prayers for this family as the investigation continues. riverdale heights, abc 7 news. >> and a pastor may have saved lives when he noticed a fire and alerted authorities. it was burning in an apartme building in colorado avenue in northwest washington. firefighters had to help several people get out of the building. several people were injured. the red cross is helping the displaced residents. if you're planning on taking metro this weekend, major delays are expected through most of the system. on the red line, the tacoma station will be closed today as ntsb crews continue their investigation into the deadly june train crash. rail repairs between single tracking between friendship center and medical sights. also the west false church exit.

the district plans to appeal a major courtn of csmerimen the trinidad community led police to restrict access for several blocks. officers stopped every vehicle entered the area, refusing to let in drivers who couldn't prove they lived there or wouldn't reveal their destination. some residents complained and the u.s. court of appeals ruled the checkpoints unconstitutional. >> they basically set up m martial law. >> they believe it is effective as a crime foothing tool and legal. and your time, is 6:07. americas are targeted in a deadly terrorist attack in indonesia. plus, congress has put president obama's high speed real initiative on the fast track.

obama's high speed rails initiative on the fast track. it would provide $4 billion for construction of a new high speed rail system. the president had only asked for a billion dollars. the bill also gives amtrak another billion and a half dollars. and still ahead, flying squid have invaded the shores. thanks so much for waking waking

president obama is keeping the focus of congress on health care legislation. in an unscheduled broadcast chat from the white house yesterday he urged law makers not to "lose heart." there's growing concern about the cost of a massive overhaul, but obama says it can be controlled. two nauts will venture out on the international space station to help hook up a space station lab. it will be used to hold outdoor experiments. and much of the nation's west has been boiling under a scalding summer sun. the mercury has been rising, along with levels of discomfort and danger. here's that story. >> july in arizona is alway hot. but this week has been really excessive. it's nearly as hot in fresno. where the city has opened up public pools free of charge. cooling centers have been set up for people to get relief from the heat, which is especially dangerous for children and the

elderly. >> i'm just retired, so i'm not fit enough to be running around when it's hot. so i try to use common sense and stay cool when i can. >> it's been so hot, this farm was shutdown because of inadequate water and shelter for the farm workers. >> when they don't have an opportunity to get out of the sun if they're feeling ill, it can be a life and death situation. >> in texas, the heat and rain has brought lake levels to record lows. >> the good lord is always taking care of us. we'll get water again. >> the blazing temperatures are causing dangerous conditions in playground where equipment is hot enough to burn young bodies this young girl suffered third degree burns on her legs after kneeling on hot playground equipment. the stifling temperatures are expected to dip a little later this week, next week it's predicted to get hotter in some areas. alex stone, abc news, los

angeles. >> 15 states and the district have now hit unemployment rates of at least 10%. michigan has the highest rate with unemployment at 15%. it's the first time since 1984 that a state has hit such a high number the country's overall employment rate is 9.5%. virginia and maryland are still below the national average. well, more banks are reporting big second quarter earnings. bank of america posted more than $2 billion in profits, and citigroup posted a $3 billion profit. these announcements come on the heels of big earnings. despite the better than expected numbers, most banks are stl experiencing lawsuits from failed consumer loans. pope benedict underwent a successful surgery to prepare a broken wrist. he waved to the crowd after he left the hospital yesterday. the cast on his right arm was hidden by his sleeve. he fell at his alpine vacation.

he celebrated mass and had breakfast before going to the hospital. he is expected to be in a cast for a month. this summer, san diego's beaches draw forth families and tourists, but this year other hoards are lurking off the shores. thousands of real menacing creatures from the deep. abc's mike von fremd report on the invasion of the monster kid. >> squimers are coming face to face with visitors, jumbo flying squid, some as long as seven feet. scuba divers were the first to bump into these beasts. he swam out recently to get a closer look and was soon eye to eye with something out of a science fiction movie. >> a couple of times they grabbed the lens, but for the most part my mask and my hood. >> one of the most pristine beaches in all of the united states, has suddenly become the new home for one of mother nature's most ferocious predator. ferocious predators, yes.

but luckily they don't have an appetite for humans. no one has been killed. but disgusted? normally these jumbo squid would be feeding in the waters thousands of miles away. they migrate from alaska down to south america. there are two theories as to why they have ended up in san diego. >> one is, that this is climate change. as the waters warm up, they don't have to return down south in the winter. the other that you hear in the news is that wve fished out a lot of the large predators. >> sharks eat quinet squid, but sharks have been overfished and there are fewer of them. the nation's top marine biologist are so concerned about why the squid have ended up in san diego, they are now tagging them with sophisticated monitoring devices. what ever the reason, the beaches are becoming a lot more crowded this summer with swimmers and squid competing for

patchy, fair weather cumeluss clouds so look forward to. so a very pleasant weekend. we're going to squeeze in a couple of nice days before we get into an unsettled weather pattern. we have our nice days, behind yesterday's low pressure system. northwestly flow pulls in that cooler, dryer, less humid air up from canada and even the upper midwest. it pushes our way and we reap the benefits for it. but the timing is perfect for over the weekend here. now in the next week, that unsettled weather pattern. a shift in our upper level winds, even our low level winds will come out of the south. they'll shift from the northwest down to the south. that will open up the gulf of mexico and give us added humidity. pret much every afternoon, monday through friday. just typical pop up, isolated, scattered variety. we deal with a lot around july. 84 today, northwestly, 5-10. clear skies tonight.

crash. repairs also between medical center and friendship heights. also, the orange lines of vienna and west false church stop. and the blue and yellow line from braddock to van dorn street and huntington. a u.s. capitol police officer is being called a hero this morning after stopping a gunman who opened fire in a crowded apartment complex on greenbelt road. police say it started thursday night after the suspect got into a fight with his roommate. he is a fort myer civilian security officer. according to police, officer eddie thornton fired back despite being hit. >> i'm just glad he was there. >> the suspect was seriously wounded. officer thornton will be ok. a 12-year-old girl also suffered minor injuries. aids activist worry they might cut funding for the needle

exchange program. a commitment to the appropriations would prohibit the city from using federal funds to distribute needles within 1,000 feet of park, schools and other public areas. aids activists say it reduces the spread of h.i.v., but critics say it's a question of public safety. there's just one weekend left to visit the highway rest stop in virginia. they're scheduled to be shutdown next week to save cash. but some people say there is another option. here's that story. >> this is the last weekend that motorists traveling through virginia may be able to use 19 rest stops slated for closure. state officials say the facilities are being shutdown on tuesday to help ease the $2.6 billion budget gap over the next six years. >> speaking as a mom, it is a huge problem. i mean, places to stop just for a quick pit stop, or something for a snack. i think it's a huge concern. >> the way to keep the facilities open, state officials are asking congress to suspend a

federal law barring commercial zation of rest stops. maryland was grandfathered in before the federal law took place. that means rest stop, like the maryland house are owned by the state. but leased by companies such a as marroit that help pay for running. the -- she likes the idea of the rest stop. >> in new jersey, that's all there are. i'm used to that. people are more familiar with that sort of thing. i think people feel better stopping at private rest areas, actually. >> virginia will lose several rest stops along i-81, four along interstates 95, and two on interstates 66 and 64. triple a is sending a letter to the governor urging him to find emergency funding to keep the restaurants open. supports the idea of commercial zation as well. >> we really don'think it matters who operates these rest

60 degrees as we speak. check out the dew point number, 58. when we see dew points in the 50's this time of year, that means it will be comfortable outside. that will be the case today and on in tomorrow. we've had a good shift in our weather pattern, pushing in dryer, less humid air. so for a couple of days, we'll squeeze in low humidity and a lot of sunshine. then we get into more unsettled weather pat irns. 51 bunker hill and woodstock, virginia, 60. i want to show you the rainfall from yesterday. most of the shower action in the shenanah valley. over an inch in maryland. bunker hill picked up an inch. so healthy rainfall accumulation out west. you could use a good soaking here locally. have to way for the afternoon hours, monday through friday of next week for a few pop up storms. fairfax station right now, 65, the district, 68. here's our forecast today.

a mixture of sunny clouds, highs in the mid 80's. we'll call it 84 this afternoon with northwestly winds blowing in that comfortable air, that dryer, less humid air. then unseasonably cool, as we'll bottom up about near 60 degrees when we wake up tomorrow morning with clear skies. and a lot of sunshine to start our sunday. fair weather clouds popping up in the sky by tomorrow afternoon. and, low humidity remains, throughout the weekend, and even a few degrees cooler tomorrow. believe it or not, lower 80's for afternoon highs on july 19. it feels good. but it will change. wel have the seven day forecast coming up. >> sounds like such a pleasant weekend. now switching gears to sports. >> and the top of the morninging to you. how about tiger woods? he was a 2-1 favorite to win the british open, but instead he hit only 15 fairways in two days, had a completeeltdown, lost seven shots and six holes and missed the cut. it was unbelievable the way the wheels came off.

tiger's drive blocked by the wind, nobody could find it. tiger found the ball but it wasn't his. the five minute time limit was up and he doubled number 10. then on the 13th hole, tiger's third shot, how many times have you seen amateurs do this? back it comes, what a stretch for tiger woods. as we move on, number 13, didn't get any easier for bogey. tiger hit only 21 of 36 greens in regulation, just had a miserable time. the greenings were awful to him. finished at a plus five. so long, tiger woods. he quickly got out of there, missing the cut for only the second time in a major. >> just made mistakes. obviously you can't make mistakes and expect to not only make the cut, but also win a championship. you have to play clean rounds of golf. and i didn't. >> well, you won't see tiger today, but you can watch steve marino from fairfax, virginia take on tom watson. starting right here on abc . here's a look at your saturday

provides $4 billion for construction of the new high speed rail condition. a northern virginia vehement group now owns 10 acres. bought the group -- they are pulling out, and that project includes plans to build four metro stations. d.c. mayor is giving the d.c. counsel a revised spending proposal. yesterday, the mayor urged members to dip into the cash reserves and depend on federal stimulus money to help close a clrs 666 million short fall. the budget gap would be filled by cutting 250 positions, in addition to the other 1,5 the mayor opposed. judge sonia sotomayor seems to be on the straight path to confirmation, even though some republicans say they plan to

in maryland. madison did pick up some, hagerstown as well. and only maryland picked up more. 59 right now in cumberland, that's the cool spot. 64 in olney and madison is 62. dew points are dropping. most dew point numbers are in the upper 0's to lower 60's. and that will cause the comfortable conditions today with the low humidity level. great start to our weekend. the timing is perfect for this little shift in our weather pattern. now let's go over to the map. yesterday, we topped out at 85. another day of july, temperatures below average. record high today, 103, obviously be far from that with highs making it into the mid 80's this afternoon. notice on our wider view, counter clock wise circulation over the great lakes. i pulled that out a lot the month of july, because that's been a prevailing weather

pattern. big upper level low pressure system. pumps in that west to northwestly wind with the dryer, less humid air. that's what we're seeing again and why it will be comfortable throughout the weekend. notice the clouds. off to our east and southeast. the main moisture off to our northeast. well, that's all going to stay out of our region but we will see a pattern shift by monday. we've got that low off to the north, and behind that low, there's the low humidity. by monday, weather patterns shift. we'll see it shift out of the south and the upper level winds will shift on thursday. that will come up from the gulf of mexico. it will increase the humidity, get the moisture coming in from the gulf of mexico, with the southerly winds and help destabilize our atmosphere. mid 08's today, lot of sunshine.

few patchy clouds this afternoon. then tonight, unseasonably cool and comfortable, down near 60 degrees. the average low is 70. for tomorrow, pretty much a repeat of today. temperatures slightly cooler in the lower 80's. and next week we see a lot of thunderstorms on our forecast, monday through friday. it's not going to storm everywhere, every day. but we are expecting some pop up storm dotted on the landscape pretty much every afternoon. not everyone will get hit, but somebody should, every afternoon. in mid 80's, with no big spikes any time soon. >> still ahead on this saturday morning. >> i'm arch campbell with weekend movies, coming up.
