weather. and this weekend residents will most likely be picking up the pieces and cleaning up here in arlington, right along i-66. there were some close calls yesterday as storms toppled trees. but luckily there were no reports of any injuries. the driver of this tahoe is counting his blessings after a road trip took a turn for the worse when storms picked up. >> loud crack. sounded like thunder. i looked at my rearview mirror, the tree with a across the road. >> just like that, as you can see, this enormous tree came crashing down on to oncoming traffic, smashing this white van in front of the small hyundai. >> we'll remember this for the rest of our lives. but i thought they were goners. >> some residents in maryland are also recovering from the wild weather. in montgomery county, a large ee dtroyed this park. and in frederick county, folks in ijamsville lost more than

power when the storm rolled through. >> listening to trees cracking and popping. you can't stop it. >> high winds even leveled an entire barn. >> devastated. it's everything you work for. >> residents here say the damage looks like the work of a possible tornado. >> we've had 60, 70 mile-an-hour winds here. this had to be more than that. >> neighbors will be picking up the pieces for several days and so will residents in faceburg, maryland, who were also caught in mother nature's path. now, ijamsville was one of the hardest hit in our region. we are told it could take a day or two before we know for sure whether a tornado touched down in that area. one neighbor that we spoke with yesterday said the destruction took only 10 minutes. it will take days for them to clean up. this morning live in arlington, kathy park, abc 7 news. >> ok, kathy. thanks for that report. a car crashed sparking an apartment fire in calvert

county. more than three dozen people were forced to leave the complex on shore acres lane in prince frederick last night. investigators say the driver of the car backed into a gas meter which started the fire that destroyed the building. thankfully, though, no one was hurt. testing is complete. the ntsb now says it will review the findings on train control equipment. federal investigators are still reviewing metro's entire signaling system and its control operations. meo says it will get to work replacing track circuits, meaning more red line delays for at least another month. and you can expect delays on all five metro lines all weekend long. track work will mean single tracking between medical center and friendship heights on the red line, between eastern market and stadium armory on the blue and orange lines. blue line trains will not stop at raddick row. and single track from van dorn to huntington.

trains will share a track between georgia avenue and u-street on the green and yellow lines. riders should add 30 minutes to their trip. arlington county police are looking for witnesses to help them piece together a hit and run crash. officers handed out flyers along columbia pike and walter reed drive last night. a week ago they say christopher bentley fleeing police in a stolen car ran a red light and smashed into a ford explorer. >> the victim explorer flipped several times, landing where i'm standing. ejecting the driver. the driver landed on the entrance of the dooay and bounced off. >> police caught bentley a block after he bailed the car. police are hoping to speak to a young woman spotted on surveillance camera who witnessed the whole thing. they say police are investigating a deadly shooting involving one of their own. officials say a special police haficer opened fire in columbia heights lastht n igter getting into a confrontion with

someone. that person died. the shooting happened on 14th and girard streets across the street from the proposed barack obama park. we now know what brought down a helicopter near hagerstown. federal investigators say the helicopter struck an unmarked steel wire about 70 feet off the ground. an employee also says the weather was "miserable" that night and offered the drive the pilot and three passengers. but the pilot said he would wait for better weather and took off soon after that. and while trying to turn back from some low clouds, he crashed on july 23, killing all four people onboard. and 7's on your side with details to the cash for clunkers tune-up. the houseworked quickly to refuel the popular program. cash for clunkers burned through $1 billion in less than a week after so many drivers raced to trade in their gas guzzlers. the senate is expected to follow

suit. >> when the white house announced the deal wouldn't continue until further notice, many dealers across the country breathed a sigh of relief. >> it will probably be the best weekend that the auto industry has seenn 100 years. >> the cash for clunkers program was so popular $1 billion that was allocated in stimulus money vanished in less than a week as people tried to cash inn o ts deal. it gives car owners up to $4,500 to find a new, fuel-efficient model in exchange for their gas guzzling rides. this is expected to jump-start the ailing auto sector. but some dealers worry they'll be on the hook for the rebate money and car owners may be left without wheels. >> we wouldn't want to bring somebody's car in and trash it or destroy it and then not have the money for them to get their new vehicle. >> cash for clunkers is one step closer to having its lease extended after the house voted to inject $2 billion into this program for another stimulus

>> welcome back at 6:15. here's a look at some of this morning's top stories. the former philippines president died after a year-long battle with colon cancer. she's credited with restoring power to the philippines. the mayor of hoboken, new jersey is the second mayor to step down after being among 44 people arrested in a corruption ring. he is accused of accepting $25,000 in bribes. the mayor of secaucus also resigned this week. connecticut senator christopher dodd says he will he surgery during the august recess to treat prostate cancer discovered during a recent physical. dodd says he plans to return to his full schedule within weeks and will run for re-election.

the full house will be ready to vote on a health care overhaul when it gets back from summer break. the bill narrowly passed the energy and commerce committee last night. it was cap increases in the cost of insurance presume yums and would let the federal government negotiate directly with drug companies for lower prices under medicare. get ready to pay more for gas and cigarettes in the district. the d.c. council voted to raise taxes to close a projecte projected $666 million budget shortfall. under the plan the city's sales tax would jump to 6%. the current gas tax would go up three and a half cents and cigarette tax will go up 50 cents to $2.50 a pack. mayor fenty is expected to sign it. congresthe house voted to restrw wall street executives get paid after employees were awarded with bonuses topping $1 million each. the move would ban companies

>> all right, kathy. thanks for that. metro begins repairs next week at the site of last month's deadly crash. that will mean more delays on the red line. the ntsb yesterday said it completed its on-site inspection. the official cause remains under investigation, though the ntsb is focusing on glitches in the train detection system. metro says the red line repairs should take about a month. a metro bus driver is on unpaid leave after being charged with driving with a suspended license. police arrested carletta douglas on thursday. they said they made the discovery after a car slammed into her bus. douglas is accused with driving with a license that was suspended for more than two mont. >> if somebody's not doin their duty. no way a metro operator should be riding around with a dead -- with a suspended license. i believe someone is not doing their job.

>> douglas told abc 7 she would love to explain her situation but would get in trouble if she did. she's worked for metro for eight years. she has five days to produce a valid driver's license or she'll be fired. z.c. police are looking for the suspect who killed a man inside his northwest home overnight. officers found the victim who was in his 50's in the basement of a house in the 4200 block of illinois avenue. he had been shot several times. the prosecution in chandra levy's murder is presented a new witness while the defense is pointing fingers at 10 other possible suspects. they used that to ask for a delay of trial yesterday. the judge refused. ththe washington intern's remais were found in rock creek park a year later. >> court documents say he killed the two men who allegedly helped him murder leafy. prosecutors also say' tacked numerous people rock creek park the same day. a trial date is set for january. a mechanicsville man is under arrest accused of throwing a chunk of concrete at a car. 27-year-old travis butler is arged with two counts of second degree assault. the concrete crashed through the car's windshield and struck a 15-year-old girl in the back seat. her skull was fractured. detectives say butler was on work release from a coun detention center when the assault occurred. starting tomorrow the riverdale and capital heights fire stations will lose all of their career firefighters. they're being relocated to other under staffed stations across prince george's county. roy taylor was among those protesting last night ex-says it leaves -- last night. he says it leaves the safety of all residents, including his

served after the september 11 attacks are eligible for a full four-year tuition at a state university. members of the guard and reserve who spent at least three months activated for war service are also covered. the second round of the street soccer tournament gets underway two hours from now. the opening ceremonies took place yesterday. the three-day competition is unique in that all the athletes are homeless. the tournament is designed to improve players' abilities to interact, set goals, and improve their overall situation. well, it is fl speed ahead for cash for clunkers. after burning through its entire $1 billion budget in just one week the house raced to add $2 billion to the program. the senate is expected to dot same next week -- do the same next week. that has car drivers breathing a sigh of relief. >> they didn't come out because it sounded too good to be true.

the most part. hagerstown, 65. notice the dew point numbers in the mid 60's. i know that's still humid, right? a little uncomfortable. but it's an improvment upon what we had yesterday. that's due to the cold front that pushed through overnight. ushering in some slightly dryer air. this time of year our reprevious from the humidity is always -- reprieve from the humidity is always short but very sweet. that's the situation today. 72 in the district. yesterday we topped out at 90 degrees. we'll be close to that later today, probably upper 80's. average high, 88 degrees. of course, near average today, near average tomorrow and into next week as well. clouds have cleared out with that cold front. that's why we have the vast sunshine to start our day. a few areas of patchy fog due to the residual moisture from some of the heavy downpours. but overall that fog will burn off quickly. we have the cold front number one whh moved through last

night. cold front number two is what should affect us tomorrow. it's not going to be a very strong cold front. more of a wind shift line than anything. can you see the line of clouds along that front right now in the midwest. even with a few showers, that's going to continue to push east. but we're stuck in between right now. here's the district. we're in between today. we have sort of a break in the showers and thunderstorms. a lull in the action today before a cold front number two moves on through tomorrow. again it should be a fairly weak cold front. not going to notice much of a change behind it it could act as a trigger for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. 88 the high temperature today. scattered afternoon clouds. tonight, increasing clouds ahead of the cold front. southerly wds bumping up the humidity again as well. isolated showers can't be ruled out while we're sleeping tonight. even early morning tomorrow, chance of an isolated shower. tomorrow afternoon, scattered showers and storms. possibly severe storms. mainly east of i-95 tomorrow afternoon. now, next week, much dryer, less
