captions paid for by abc, inc. good evening, i'm cynthia mcfadden. we begin tonight with the first public words from dr. conrad murray, the man who was with michael jackson the day he died and now according to his spokesperson has stopped practicing medicine while the investigation into the circumstances of michael jackson's death proceed. this case has raised serious questions about the relationship between celebrity and doctor. according to hollywood insiders, there are plenty of doctors willing to do whatever a star asks of them. even if it means forsaking their hippocratic oath. chris connelly gets the inside story. >> all of my patients and friends who have sent me e-mails, letters and messages to let me know of the support for me and my family. >> speaking out for the first time since the death of michael jackson, dr. conrad murray, who

he was getting a number of prescriptions under a number of different names. and this is a common thing amongst celebrity addicts because they demand what they want. and there are certain kinds of doctors who will give it to them because they want to be innary employ. >> in private practice and on "celebrity rehab", dr. drew pinsky works with the addicted. many of them well known. how often do you see these doc hollywood s coming into the lives of the celebrities who are looking for the powerful prescription drugs and enabling them in this dance? >> my job has become about taking patients, addicts, off of substances that my peers give them. this is just what i do all day long. and nowhere is that more egregious than with celebrities. if you don't have training in addiction, you can get into some serious situations. >> what motivated you to come and change? >> i just lost my life recently. >> i just was a -- was a little

miniature pharmacist. i just had such vast amounts. i was shocked sometimes that i lived through because i get it. >> women suit model and celebrity rehab veteran amber smith. >> this going to bring you up. this is going to keep me going. >> spent 16 years in the grip of an addiction to prescription drugs. >> i never ever admitted that i had a problem with drugs, ever. >> she was addicted by the time she was a teenager. her original symptoms were pelvic pain, headache and panic. once she found doctors to give her what she wanted she began believing she couldn't exist, she couldn't live without those medicines. >> i need opiates, because that gives me keeps -- that keeps me alive. >> she learned how to get the pills from the doc hollywoods. >> doctors get very starstruck. so it was like i was joining the club or rather they were joining my club.

i did kind of open up the purse by accident and they would see a "playboy" cover and say, is that you? oh, yes, i just got the headaches, i don't know what do. they were helping out a ha working model. >> absolutely no doubt that the doctors become seduced by the celebrity world and basking in the glow of celebrity and that's a boundary problem. you're not that person's friend, you're a doctor. >> did you know what you wanted? would you say, i need something to make me sleep or something to sedate me or would you say i need extra y or z drug? >> well, there's a fine line. i knew exactly what i wanted, but the thing is if you say, look, i need norco, over 325, tylo noll and i need 250, you can't -- you can't tell someone what to write. you can say i need something for pain and i need something very strong because i have had migraines a long time.

normally, narco works and i do travel a lot, so i don't want to keep getting refills. >> you're painting a picture of a very manipulative patient. >> i'm painting a picture of a drug addict. to me, the drugs are my life. if you take away my life, you're trying to kill me. >> it's brought deadly consequences to celebrities in the past. anna nicole smith's pled guilty for prescribing thousands of drugs to her before her fatal overdose in february of 2007. in 2002, a doctor had his license revoked for prescribing pain killers and sedatives to patients like winona ryder under the alias of emily thompson and to courtney love. michael jackson's search for powerful love even asked him --

led him to ask deepak chopra for drugs, and he turned him down flat. he knew other ways to get the substances that he wanted >> one way that the ctors are found is that they are concierge doctors in hotels. another way to find the doctors is through the rumor mill. you know, many celebrities are seeing the same people. so you know know who it is. >> am bier smith said she -- amber smith said she twice nearly suffered fatal overdoses, but the responsibility lies with her, not the doctorsho gave her drugs. >> a lot of people say to me, why aren't you angry? i'm in shell shock and i'm not used to people caring. ask me in a year and maybe i'll be a lot more angry for losing the best years of my life. >> 11 months clean, every bit a siren at 38, she is proud to be rebuilding her life. >> i feel like one wrong move and i'll be devastated. but i'm very hopeful.

this patch of desert in the southwest is ground zero for every car company on the planet to test their newest ride, under intense triple digit heat to see how they perform. right now she's chasing what she believes to be a 2012 volkswagen suv hybrid that's never been seen. safe to say, the people inside are not happy. >> when they say no photos, that definitely means go for it. keep on shooting and shooting and usually people that are with me have to drag me away. >> here a german engineer from an earlier chase is trying unsuccessfully to convince her not to take any pictures. and she has a vast collection of shots like this of annoyed test drivers and specialists from around the world, blocking her, trying to scare her away by taking her picture and even mooning her. how annoyed are they with you?

>> they're very annoyed. they leave the proving grounds and are told, don't let anybody get photos. and before the day is done, you know, the photos are blished on the internet. so they get pretty annoyed with me. >> you love that? >> well, okay, maybe i do. >> she says all her shoots are perfectly legal. she stays on public property. it's not a concept familiar to some of the engineers who come from other countries. this one tried to run down her son. she ended up calling the company's headquarters. not for the first time, in order to settle things. >> when she closes in for the kill, get out of the way. it's like watching a predator. i mean, she's vicious. >> both her ex-husband and an exhighway patrol man who works for her says brenda is the master. >> she is so unassuming. you don't picture her as a spy photographer. she's the housewife, you know? but she's really good at it
