a lot of dealerships around the country are cashing out early. >> of the 500 dealers that we put through, only 16 have been paid for so far. >> that is the story around the country. as of yesterday morning, 500,000 cars were sold through the cash for clunkers program. good news for drivers but not always for dealers. it too four hours to upload one rebate application. one of the paperwork must be filed by monday's deadline and that's why the first dealership that we checked out pulled out of the program. >> they're already owed a lot of money from the government, so we stopped doing t. >> dealerships expect to be mobbed with last-minute trade-ins. >> the cash for clunkers program caused me to get a new car sooner rather than later. with it ending monday, it got

the fire under us. vehicles getting less than 18 miles per gallon qualify for the program. >> ford explorers are the number one trade-in, and the top-selling car, the toyota corolla. >> we have been looking for a couple of weeks now. when we received information that it almost was going to end, we wanted to take advantage of it before it did. >> now, the most important thing to understand is this is the dealer's responsibility that the buyer gets the rebate. the monday night deadline is a filing deadline. any application that isn't in and processed by monday at 8:00, well, the dealer has to pay out of their own pocket. no dealership wants that. that's why you're seeing a lot of dealerships that have ended the program yesterday or later this afternoon. anyone who is out there still thinking about trading in, call ahead and get in line early.

moving to the west of bermuda and the track will take it up towards new england. tropical storm warnings for the southern coast of rhode island and massachusetts, heading up to the canadian maritime. this is preventing the cold front from making great progress coming through our area. it is going to show us down. s that's the complicating factor. once this leaves, the speed of the cold front will enhance and we will see clearing around here by tomorrow, and then, as i said, probably by monday, we will see nice sunny skies but the dew points will be dropping tomorrow. our forecast then for today, what we have is the possibility of showers on through the day. heavy downpours are possible. we have a flashflood watch in effect for all of us east of the blue ridge until 5:15. it is going to be sticky out there. dew points in the 70's. that will change tomorrow. high yesterday at reagan national, 95 degrees, well above the seasonal average of 86. here you can see that we are far from being alone in the effect

the housing market is hoped to be making a comeback. >> some good news on the housing front. the national association of real tores existing home sales reports all the sales numbers are up. >> if you look over the course of several months, it does appear that the housing market is bottoming out a bit. >> this is especially comforting news since the state of the house market was a major cause of the economic downturn. sales of pre-owned homes in july surpassed economists' expectations with an annual sales pace of more than 5 million over the month, 7% higher than sales in june, the biggest monthly increase in sales in a decade. >> affordability is at an equal time high. you have home prices that have dropped 30% and interest rates at very low amounts and you have consumers who have been waiting to buy combined with the 8,000 dollar credit you get as a first-time home buyers.
