tonight on "nightline," closing in on a killer. authorities name lab technician ray clark as a person of interest in the grisly murder of yale graduate student annie le. tonight, he's in custody. ivy league's horror. it is a crime that has shocked a campus and community. after the body of a missing brilliant bride to be is found hidden inside a laboratory wall. we'll have the latest. streets of philadelphia. we're on the beat as the police try to reclaim the city of brotherly love from violent crime driven by crimes and drugs. so will it work? captions paid for by abc, inc.

good evening, everyone. i'm terry moran. we begin tonight with new details in the murder of yale graduate student annie le. police late tonight confirmed the identity of a man they say is a person of interest in her kiing. this grim mystery began with an ivy league bride to be missing just days before her wedding. then a frantic search for a kier after the discovery sunday of her body hidden in a campus lab. and now, new information and questions about a lab technician working in the same building. sharyn alfonsi is at the new haven police headquarters tonight. >> well, the new haven police department says they do have a person of interest in the murder of annie le. his name is raymond clark. he is a 24-year-old vet tech who worked in the same building as annie le. he is not a yale university student. at this hour, we are told that police are searching his home

and he has been taken into custody. all of this comes exactly one week after annie le went missing. >> okay. >> friends say annie was always the smartest girl in class, but it was her easy mile that endeared her to -- easy smile that enkerred her to so many. annie was counting down the days to her wedding. her facebook was filled with information about the ring, the cake. and annie went into the yale lab building where she worked. a surveillance tape captured this picture of her. an important clue because after that, annie seemed vanish. she didn't come home that night. her roommate calls police. >> you see or hear anything, give us a call. >> the next day police are on the case. they don't know if annie is a

victim of a crime or simply a bride who got cold feet. the search begins at the lab building where she was last seen. inside, investigators find a series of telling clues. >> she was here at 11:00. look at all the people. how could that happen? she's a little tiny thing, but still, it's amazing. really is. she left a pocketbook, cell phone, everything in the lab. she didn't go home last night. her fiance, she's getting married sunday. he hasn't heard from her, so everyone is pretty worried. >> next investigators start looking at surveillance tape and cameras all around the lab building. they look frame by frame at every tape for more than 70 cameras, and another clue reveals itself. in all that tape, there isn't a single image of annie leaving. search dogs comb over the lab. investigators start digging through campus dumpsters. on friday, they're back at the lab again. but what time with blue -- but

this time with blue prints in hand. a hundred state and federal investigators are now on the case, but still no sign of annie. at the long island home of her fiance, presents are piling up, wedding is cancelled but at the flower shop the owner remains hopeful. >> we are saddened to hear about the whole situation. as far as knowing if she is a runaway bride, we do not know. but we're hoping that's what it is. >> meanwhile, back at yale, investigators discover another key piece of evidence. bloody clothing stuffed into the ceiling of the lab. sources say it doesn't appear to be annie's. >> items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. none have been associated with annie le. >> annie. >> annie's family is frightened. none of the news makes sense. >> i feel lost. i don't know what happened to my niece. >> her wedding day comes and goes. and then, at 5:00 that night,

the investigators make a grisly discovery. annie's body is stuffed deep into the wall of the basement leaving some to speculate that whoever murdered her had intimate knowledge of the building. >> she hasn't been positively identified at this time, but assuming it is her at this time. so we're treating it as a homicide. i can't give you any more information -- >> by monday, the yale campus scarred with police tape. abc learns police did not think that the murder is random. sources say a suspect who is not a student at the university has been questioned and has failed a polygraph test. they say the suspect has what appears to be defensive wounds. scratches across his chest. tonight, police are looking over raymond clark's apartment 30 minutes from new haven. they also hope to get dna samples from the lab tech. >> if he cooperates, the search

we turn now to the city of philadelphia where the homicide rate had risen to an alarming high of 4,000 murders in the calendar year. it was driven by violence and guns. and five police officers were

killed in the line of duty in a year and a half. the city of brotherly love had become anything but that, but as vicki mabry found out, authorities are now finding ways to reclaim the streets. >> this my boy. no, no. this my boy. >> this isn't the first time philadelphia police have been called to this bar. >> everything legal now. we came out, they back again. this is crazy! >> neighbors say it's a nuisance, so police have been called for fights and noise complaints. >> this is basically to cease operations. what that does is the business is closed until they obtain the correct licenses. >> tonight's visit not in response to a specific complaint. they are here as part of a special operation to search for violations. >> we got all the paperwork done so why are you back again? >> because we're checking for the violations. >> but there is a surprise.

cuisine. and now jacques pepin continues to create mouth watering dishes and desserts and shares the recipes in tonight's "platelist". >> i came out in the end of 1969 from france, you know, my parents had a restaurant. so i can't remember any time in my life from age 5, 6 that i wasn't in a kitchen. i'm going to go a ganache and it's a mixture of chocolate and creme. i'm going to put eight ounce of chocolate and i'm going to break the chocolate like this and put that directly into the hot creme. i'm going to melt -- i have a couple egg whites here. in there, i'm going to put a couple of the spoonfuls of sugar.

you can hear the yolk falling on themselves. i'm not touching and not touching it because when i was in the apprenticeship if you touch it the chef kicks you if the rear end. i put that in there which i mix with the whisk. to lighten it. and let that set. now i go back to the spatula to fold that. i put that in a prepared tray. this will cook very fast. about ten minutes. 350 degrees. so i have a cup of cream here. a couple of spoons of sugar. i'm going to put a dash of vanilla. so with the cream it's just an emulsion back and forth. so mine here is just about right. if you crack it, you hide it as much as you can. so make sure it's cold. and now we are going to put the cream on top of it. this is not your standard weight

watcher type of a recipe. usually you can afford it and you fold it again. now a little bit of powdered sugar. a strawberry around. and voila. about six years ago when my mother took me to a farm in the summer and the farmer took me to the barn and made me sit down to where she was milking the cow and i had the first bowl of milk an it was slightly tepid, butterly, rich taste. the memory of the senses are ve immediate and very powerful.
