kindergarten. a piece of television history is about to become history. tomorrow is the final episode of the soap opera "guiding light". "guiding light" is the longest running series ever on television. it has been on the air for 57 years. it was on the radio for 15 years before that. so some version of "guiding light" has been on the air for like 72 years. somehow i never managed to watch it one single time. >> yeah, it was kind of crazy. but i mean, our whole family experience was crazy. i grew up with my grandparents speaking polish because they didn't speak english. so i'd sit at home talking polish every day and eating polish soup. >> wow. how old were your grandparents when they moveover? >> they were old, and they didn't speak any english, and when they got here they were feeling out the whole post communism thing. they were always afraid that the house would get infiltrated. >> really? >> yeah. like my grandmother would hide money in books vhs videotapes. every once in a while i'd go through the encyclopedia and find money. a lot of my polish dancer instructors they were angry -- a little bit of the anger. polish mustaches are amazing. >> they're the thickest -- one of the thickest mustaches.

>> they're great. so they would have that kind of fear in the back of their mind, which is great. it was great for discipline because it taught me to focus. >> they had fear of what, their mustaches being taken by the ss? >> yeah. that's why they hung on to them so hard. they grew them out as long as they could. >> were they disciplinarians, your grandparents? >> yeah, they were. like if we were having dinner i would have to sit at the table until everything was finished. you know, which is tough, when you're eating weird polish food a lot. >> yeah. yeah. >> and, you know, but in like instruction and in school, like they were very rigid. you know? which i think helped. you know, i still have in the back of my mind i'm always yelling in polish. my baby-sitter actually a couple of years ago was yelling at me and she was like i'm an adult now too. which is strange, you know? we were at a function. she came up to me and she said, you need to -- in polish, you need to take this seriously. when i was a kid she'd give me a kit kat.
