this was setting the tone for the summit. it is a nuclear bomb making materials. an agreement on whether to keep those materials out of their hands. >> to get just enough nuclear material to cause terrible havoc and loss of alive somewhere in the world. >> iran and north korea were not invited because both are seen as violators of the local non- proliferation treaty. secretary of state hillary clinton spoke about u.s. efforts. >> let no one be mistaken. the united states will defend ourselves and our partners and allies. >> it has already had an impact on d.c. residents. there were numerous road closures that are already in effect. >> i have got to go to work. i work in alexandria. >> the mount vernon square metro

station is closed. drivers will have to brace for rolling road closures, back-and- forth to the convention center. >> motorcades every day. i think it is par for the course. >> and streets near the d.c. convention center will be closed now through tuesday night. the mount vernon tro stop will be closed through wednesday morning, and there are other restrictions. they are telling people to be prepared to have their bags searched. for a list on all the road closures, go to the website. president obama has been in office less than two years, and now, he will have to nominate another supreme court justice after john paul stevens says he will retire after this summer. he turns 19 later this month. the names being tossed around

includes the solicitor general elena kagan and a judge. here with us is a congressional reporter for politico. let's start with justice stevens. he is known as the liberal lion of the court. this is an opportunity for obama to find a replacement. what is the likelihood of a obama choosing outside of that? >> obama faces a challenge because it is now a midterm election year. he is a lawyer by training by background. he went to harvard law school. he may not want to overreach. >> what is he looking for in a replacement? >> i think he is looking for

someone who can beat a leader in the way justice stevens has been to gather the four or five votes of the liberal wing and hold them together but also someone who has a proven record but not so much detail and so much controversy that they're going to cause ire in the senate. when they were betting a lot of candidates last year for nomination that led to sonia sotomayor, there were different candidates. it will not be too long for the president to make a choice. >> it is still early, but there are front runners? >> there are. there are those three. there are 8 to 10 contenders. the president could go on long way. at this point, the solicitor general right now, someone who went to harvard law school, a lot of conservatives like her because she brought conservatives into the harvard

law. but she is also a lightning rod. she was a dean of the school. that could be a controversial issue. she has not been a judge, so there is not a long paper trail. so obama seems like he might be pretty comfortable with putting her on the court. >> ok, james, let's move along and talk about the congressman from michigan. he has also just announced that he is retiring. there was voting on health-care reform. there was language about federal funding. does this have anything to do with the announcement he is going to retire? >> he was stung by the left and the right. liberals were really upset that he held out for so long. he went along with a bill that

did not have strict anti- abortion language, which he wanted. he was facing a primary challenge. he almost certainly would have resolve -- survived through this election, but i think he was sick and tired. he has been there 10 terms. it is a lot of work to keep going. it deftly pushed him over the ed. >> ok, thank you so much. we do appreciate your being here with us. michelle obama will take her first solo trip as first lady this week. she leaves for mexico on tuesday and will be there until thursday. president obama wants her to talk of education and economic advancement. mrs. obama has been discussing these topics with the first lady of mexico. monday marks the end of the

general assembly. there are last-minute bill changes that can be made up until monday. there is a bill that would require drivers in maryland to use a handsfree device when talking on the telephone. the proposal would let's people getting medical marijuana with authorization. federal investigators will be in west virginia tomorrow tried to figure out what caused a deadly mine explosion. 29 miners died in a glass. dust is expected to have caused this explosion. it is supposed to keep gas and coal dust away from the minors. officials say enforcement efforts are up 20% in the past years. appeals jumped 400%. >> to go to a mine and say we do

space shuttle discovery crew is finished their mission this week. the crew members have finished one of three planned space walks. the astronauts were working on a cooling system. discovery and its seven-member crew are expected to do that until friday. cutting the ribbon for the annual walk. the congressman's daughter mary is suffering from an autumn the immune disease which affects people. the what is saturday from 8:30 in the morning until noon. there expect to be 2500 walkers.

taking a look at tonight's top stories, a nuclear summit will create traffic problems tomorrow morning. this is around the convention center. the mount vernon metro station will be closed. people might be asked to show identification to get around. a man is being searched for respected of killing a woman and her 3-year-old daughter. the victims were found inside an apartment. the suspect is the little girl's father. people who live nearby are afraid the suspect may still be in the area.

at the president of: was killed when his plane crashed in russia. he and his wife and other officials died in that crash. hundreds of people gathered to honor them. on a lighter note -- it seems april has been good to us so far. >> it really warmed up very, very nicely. temperatures were well into the 90's. a first stop is wtop radio. 76 degrees was the high. currently, 68 with no rain to speak of. currently 56 degrees at our last stop after a high of 79 and in low of 40 in waldorf.

76 today at reagan national. there is a cooler trend on the way. temperatures are cooling down. temperatures are being kept from falling quickly. at reagan national airport, it is warmer. the cooler air will eventually settle across the area. daytime highs only in the lower 60's. we are watching a cold front that is drifting from the north to the south. you can see this line across pennsylvania. now, the frontal system heads across the delmarva peninsula. this will stall across the virginia-north carolina border. as the area of low pressure moves off, tuesday afternoon, some rain.

temperatures are around 65, 70 degrees. the high pressure will eventually moved out of here. some clouds in the overnight, temperatures in the 40's. a bit colder out in the mountains and the higher elevations. get your sunglasses out tomorrow. you will need them. by afternoon, it daytime highs 65 to 70 degrees. you will see temperatures in the low 70's later in the week. here is the extended outlook. not so bad. showers late in the day and into the overnight hours. by thursday, back to the low 70's. friday, we and the workweek, and the upcoming weekend looks dry. temperatures above average for this time of year.
