a new "the washington post" poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5%. o'malley has 52%, with ehrlich having 41%. >> maryland governor martin o'malley says this is his favorite time of campaign appearances. he sweeps into a private home for a chat with his host and invited guests. there is a surprise. >> this man, the father, taught me spanish. >> as the governors settled in the home in montgomery village, he says throughout his career, he has always asked himself how decisions would be treated at the kitchen table. he said it was a place that was the center of his upbringing. >> it was a place where discipline was meted out and we're hopes and dreams were discussed. all of these things have been

around the kitchen table. >> the subject today is education. the guests are all students, and their concern? how to pay for college. appearances like this one are no accident during the campaign. o'malley eagerly boasts how re- froze maryland in state college tuition for years, and these young people are clearly supporters -- how he froze maryland state college tuition for years. >> it will not be a problem anymore. >> that says a lot about a person, coming out and speaking, just a one-on-one, with students or with people in the community. >> during these tough times, we have made a lot of important decisions and a lot of tough decisions, but one of the things that we have decided is one of the things to protect is affordable college. >> he went to catholic university and the university of maryland law school, launching a

career that included time as a baltimore prosecutor and councilman. he served eight years as baltimore mayor before in feeding republican incumbent bob ehrlich minute in the 2006 election -- before defeating the incumbent. >> i look at it as a blessing and an opportunity. we are favoring this storm better than any other stayed in the union -- we are fairing better. >> even as private sector unemployment climbed. now, he talks about those tough decisions in every speech an interview begins. >> i do think people are looking at this raise -- in every speech an interview begins. >> the governor will not -- he says he has enjoyed his time in office, but he does admit that there is is best known personal passion.

♪ that is the governor with his band. he is the lead singer and plays the guitar, although those occasions are far more rare now. >> i always listen to music. it is a part of me. but i have not had a whole lot of time to do it, as i used to. i consider myself very fortunate that i am able to serve my neighbors at a time when they most need principal, santa leadership that is focused on the future -- when they need principaled, sound leadership. >> he wants to win back his own job. brad bell spent time with bob ehrlich. >> eight years ago, bob ehrlich celebrated a victory few thought possible. he had been elected as only the sixth republican governor in the history of maryland.

he narrowly defeated the democrat, kathleen kennedy townsend. she is the niece of jfk, but she never connected with maryland voters. then, as now, bob ehrlich played up his deep maryland roads, which he will probably tell you are planted firmly in the small town of arbutus. that is where his klein began and where he celebrated that night the biggest win of his life -- that is where his climb began. >> that is where mom and dad still live. >> just outside of the baltimore beltway, arbutus is a blue- collar town, and bob ehrlich sides seem to be everywhere.

>> my big break allowed me to punch my ticket in life. the legislature. it all began with getting my ticket punched as unlucky young kid. he turned it down as it into a surplus and defeated proposed taxes. he created 100,000 new jobs. now, the former governor is campaigning as a friend to business. looking to create jobs again. >> job one of our administration

beginning november 1 is turning this business environment around. >> this is the actual binder. the business comes from the intercounty connector project, and he says it has gotten harder to do business since bob ehrlich left office. >> he said that these regulations have crippled the small business. >> that was the whole campaign there in one sentence. >> so bob ehrlich once again finds himself fighting in the majority democratic state. last march, he and his wife kicked off the campaign during an appearance in rockville, doing a radio show.

>> and welcome back to where "battleground 2010" special. >> looking at what will happen, we have a reporter from politico, and peter hart says the republicans, and you know this, they are all fired up. the president is gold in the democrats. -- is scolding the democrats. >> on the democratic side, you have to wonder if president obama is having an effect. there was 26,000 people at the university of wisconsin-madison campus. those people went nuts for president obama during 2008. the fact that he could only draw 26,000 really shows the drop-off in enthusiasm for him, and that

contrasts sharply with the other side, where tea party candidates or not, the energy is on the right, and the momentum is with these candidates that may have seen less delectable in general elections, who now have momentum at their backs. >> speaking of one of them, if tea party can anyone the party primary in delaware -- the tea party candidate who won the primary in delaware, christine o'donnell. should they be worried? >> i think they do have a reason to be more worried, with her victory in delaware and also the win in nevada over candidates who were otherwise thought to be more electable candidate, who lost those republican primaries because they had -- they did not have tea party support. in fact, many tea party people came out to vote against them for that very reason.

those are really the only ways in which democrats have a chance of holding on to the united states senate, and they may lose the house. >> i am glad you brought that up. jim demint was catching some flak over that. >> after the election, the republicans, yes, there might be a little bit of tension between this new found tea party caucus, if there is one, with a grand ball from kentucky, joe miller from alaska, possibly one from nevada winning, and joining forces with jim demint, and they have a real conservative caucus, whether they are able to do that, and i think that needs to be seen. that will be one of the big questions posed november 2. >> thank you. >> coming up, the hot seat. sit down with them and get the

>> now we turn to a pioneer in the united states congress. barbara mikulski was the first to be elected to the house and the senate in her own right. >> she will become the longest serving woman senator. we sat down with her. >> much has changed since barbara mikulski became the first female elected to the senate, whose husband had not served in higher office. >> when i arrived in north american history. >> she is up for election again this year. the 30-plus veteran of maryland politics insists -- despite having not had a challenging reelection bid, since she earned her senate seat in 1986. >> not to wait six weeks before the election.

about our interview even before it ended. we asked the senator about her reputation about being tough on her staff. she says that is what taxpayers deserve. >> i demand a lot of myself, and i demand a lot from the people who work for me. >> the senator says bringing jobs to maryland is her top priority. she is also an avid nafta opponent. she says very often, the issues are not first and foremost on people's minds. >> you can give the greatest speech in your world, world hunger, how to solve conflict, and at the end of it, whether it is hillary or anyone else, it will be about her hair. >> she says she has no plans to leave the senate anytime soon. >> i am not shy, and i am not

>> on november 2, maryland voters will be heading to the polls. earlier, we took you behind-the- scenes of the campaign for governor. >> we sat down with the candidates one on one about the race and their plans. here is what was told to brad bell by bob ehrlich if he gets back his old job. >> thank you for sitting down with us. >> my pleasure. >> most folks seem to think there is one big issue, and is the economy, it is jobs. >> yeah. >> can you promise that more jobs will be created during your administration? >> yes. can i give you a number? can i quantified? no. one of the major issues is the impact of state regulators and regulation on job creation. will that improved dramatically, as it did the first time i was

governor -- will that improve? yes. tax increases, a hostile regulatory environment, that is part of his record. >> given the current situation in the economy, will you be able to roll back the sales tax? >> i think we cannot afford not to. >> that is the one the most notice, i think, on a daily basis. -- the one that we must notice. 600 dollars million. some say it is $400 million. where will that come from? >> when you're talking about real economics, what happens in the real world, you will have a decrease -- what is it? $200 million? who knows? the point of it is, if you're talking about business reputation, talking about

increasing costs to the state, talking about balancing the budget, it has to occur. >> the purple line. you do not want that bill to. >> -- do not want that built. >> new, clean running buses. people will use it. light rail, nobody can pinpoint for you today the source of those dollars. it is a dream. some people like it. some people do not. i would rather dream in the world of plausible. i would rather spend scarce resources for roads that make sense and fix mass transit where it is broken. in maryland today, marc and metro are broken. >> the utility. deregulation led to a rate hike. >> correct.

1999. >> and it seems to have scarred both of you in some fashion or another. they have accused martin o'malley of not fulfilling his promise to roll it back, and he says that you allowed it to go forward. >> here is the problem. i do not accuse governor o'malley of anything. you reported it, that he would stop the rate hikes, and he did not. he either knew or should have known he could not do it. >> why should people vote for you this time around? what is different now? what should sway people your way? this has been a tough period in our state's history, our nation's history? >> brad, it is a serious time. there is a lot of angst out there. business has been hammered. people expect serious leaders. this country has serious issues.

the over the top step has not worked for him. they are angry. they are bitter. they are scared. and they should be. >> governor martin o'malley says he has made tough choices in the past four years to help maryland families and family-owned businesses, as well, but he sat down with brad bell to talk about the hard work ahead. >> governor, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. during this election, it seems that one issue trumps all, and that is jobs, the economy. >> absolutely. >> what can you do to add jobs? >> there are things that we can do. the people who create jobs, two out of three jobs created in our state are created by small businesses, but there are things that the state and government can do to spur that forward. the public-private partnership we have done has created jobs at the port of baltimore. the vision for cybersecurity,

where maryland has become the epicenter. community colleges and our other work force efforts, and there is the small-business hiring tax credit. $5,000 to any company, a large, medium, or small, that hires a marylander and gets them back to work. there is an effort, where we are proposing to allow big entities, insurance companies to forward pay their tax liabilities so we can get more dollars into the merriman venture fund for start- ups and new innovation, so these are all things we can do -- into the maryland venture fund. >> is that a guarantee that you will not be raising taxes during another four years? >> i do not make a blanket guarantee about every possible, imaginable revenue. >> the extension of sales tax to these other services we are hearing about. >> no, i am not going to do that. i can tell you something else.

i will not raise the property tax. i will not jack up car registration fees. i will not increase college tuition by 40% like bob ehrlich did. i will not raise the corporate filing fees for every small business in the state as bob ehrlich did. it is important as we move forward that we not only protect our priorities. >> in the pocketbook issues, there is nothing more important in transportation than gridlock. what are you going to do about it? is the purple line going to be built? >> i-90 schuerholz ochopee we have already laid out the money in a capital investment plan at the state -- i sure hope it will. the federal government will have to decide if these two are to qualify, if one quantifies, and when that happens, we will have to make accommodation over a long period of time to make this happen. these are not the sorts of

things that happen in one or two years or even four years' time. >> we are the chesapeake bay state, and we have not even talked about this. morris closed. it is all about the economy, all about the economy -- more schools. >> in the toughest of times, brad, we have nonetheless been able to make record investment. we have protected four times what the predecessor did. and the waters of the chesapeake bay are cleaner now than at any time they have been in the last six years. we made the tough, right, though a popular decision that now has the blue crab population greatly rebounding -- though on popular decision -- though unpopular decision. he got a lower grade from an

environmental group. he jacked of college tuition by 40%. that was a record. i do not believe any governor in maryland did history ever turned up college tuition by 40%. in order to make college more affordable, we have now got four years without 1 cent increase in college tuition. >> thank you. we appreciate it. >> governor martin o'malley with brad bell. voter turnout in the primaries was the lowest on record. the board were posted who cast ballots, and about 22% showed up. 2.5% to give vantage of six days of early voting -- 25% took advantage of six days of early voting. >> coming up, the change in the d.c. government. what else will be changing now? >> and how will the tea party affect local elections? that is straight ahead. >> but first, trying to defend a

the basic principle? smaller government, less spending, and less taxes. in prince george's county, the tea party favorite charles lollar. >> i think my opponent is using this as an opportunity to line his own pockets for reelection without listening to his constituents, whether it is republicans, democrats, or tea party activists. there is a problem. >> the "t" in tea party. >> lollar many voters like jeff stuart, who says he is fed up with the democrats and ready for some new blood. >> the tea party, for me, i think they are a little too radical. i am not crazy about some of

their views. >> we heard several reservations, like in fairfax, virginia. >> i think it is good for our political system, but i am a little concerned about where they are taking it. >> even some conservative leaders, like karl rove and bill o'reilly, have marked some, like christine o'donnell. >> crossbreeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains. >> governor martin o'malley is talking about bob ehrlich. in an effort to turn of moderates. another wants tea party members to turn out in the gubernatorial race. >> we wanted to vote on election day. 99% of them are going to vote for bob ehrlich if they show up. >> joining us now to talk about the post-election political situation is the editor from

politico, charlie. >> nevada, illinois, and russ feingold is behind. six presidential races? >> is pretty shocking. take a look at the track record. he might be a little bit for the state. he has always won pretty comfortably. many people thought he would be on the safe side. among all of the incumbents in this cycle. it got like this this quickly. >> are you expecting any others? >> the biggest shocker of them all, i think, might be the final three, people looking at sort of a democratic far wall. the other two would be california and washington state.

>> barber boxer. >> exactly. two new? liberal with that kind of voting record -- who knew? she has never really had a problem. but all of a sudden, she has got a challenger who has some money. very decision, you have a very close race. -- and very quickly, you have a very close race. another has not been challenged that closely, and all of a sudden, it is a pretty close race. >> a democrat in the top of your mind. >> there are a couple. there are some that i view as sort of trench warfare races, and that would include ohio. there are seeds that are open with republican incumbents who have stepped down. -- there are seats that are open. it would be an enormous victory for them. a couple of long shots, north carolina.
