fans were fearing most. hours of negotiations, between owners and players yesterday, yielded absolutely nothing. so, the first two weeks of the season has now been officially cancelled. >> so, that's 100 games gone, which represent nearly $83 million in lost ticket sales. some teams are already laying off staff members. and there are concession workers, souvenir sellers and parking lot attendant that are affected. commissioner david stern says there is a gulf between the sides. >> i think it's fair to say that we established the positions of the parties with complete certainty of where each stood. and we remain, really, very, very far apart, on virtually all issues. >> ominous sounding right there. even if the lockout of the players ended right now, no games would be played until november 15th at the earliest. on a tweet this morning, lebron

james called it a sad day. and he apologized to fans, as well. also developing overnight, new arrests in the occupy wall street protests happening around the country. police in boston say about 100 demonstrators have been taken into custody. the arrests came, after protesters moved into an area they did not have permission to be in. the protesters accused the cops of being heavy-handed. protesters in new york prepare to bring their anger to the door stops of some of the city's wealthiest residents today. the march plans to go by five homes, including that of rupert murdoch. they are planning to disrupt things at senate and house buildings today. the protests are getting attention of a presidential candidate, especially herman cain, who finds himself in enviable territory going into tonight's debate, a solid number two. rick perry is not slipping by silently. john hendren has all of the

family posted it on youtube. he lost both his legs and several fingers after a bomb blast in afghanistan. opening statements get under way today in the trial of the alleged underwear bomber. omar abdulmutallab has a lawyer and his attorney will do most of the tacking. he is charged with trying to blow up a plane in 2009 with explosives hidden in his underwear. a virus has reportedly affected the network on u.s. air force drones. the virus is able to capture strokes from a keyboard. there are no reports that any data -- that classified data was lost. and it's not clear if the virus was deliberate or accidental. we've learned new details surrounding the death of steve jobs last week. respiratory arrest is the immediate cause, according to the death certificate.

it's breaking news in mexico this morning. tourists are abandoning resorts as a category 3 hurricane heads for that country's pacific coast. hurricane jova is dumping heavy rain in puerto vallarta, before landfall this afternoon. it's already whipping up 120-mile-per-hour winds. wet with flooding from jacksonville to richmond. slick on i-20 and 40 from the carolinas to atlanta and nashville. wet on i-44 in missouri. and also on i-40, in arkansas. rain drenches i-5 from seattle to portland. i-84, from portland to boise. and i-90, from seattle to

helena. >> and if you're flying, a couple of weather-related airport delays are possible in charlotte and atlanta. no matter how bad the weather are where are you today, it's nowhere near the extreme conditions near the south pole. >> that's where an american woman is waiting to be rescued, weeks after she believes she suffered a stroke. she's hat a remote research stakes and needs to get out soon. >> reporter: it is a frigid 74 degrees below zero at the south pole. and it is here, totally isolated, in a laboratory surrounded by nothing but white, where renee duseur may have suffered a stroke six weeks ago. and this is where she told us she remains trapped. >> it es i'm for me to get out of here and get on with my medical treatment. and hopefully, this is not in some sort of degenerating disability. >> reporter: the company that runs the lab where douceeur is stuck says it's trying to save

her. but the deadly weather where even light winds are enough to stir the snow 200 feet in the air make it too risky to land a rescue crew. and to get everyone out safely. this is a c.t. scan. it's the machine that douceur needs to get a clear picture of her brain and determine what kind of stroke she had. they have them in about every hospital around the country. they don't have one in antarctica. douceur's speech is impaired. she needs to get to a hospital to find out what's wrong. a specialized rescue plane is ready to go. it will be douceur's ticket to the treatment she needs. she hopes by then, it's not too late. >> we are aware of the risk. i'll be one to tell you that. i would not, in extremely bad weather or anything. >> jeopardize a crew of pilots that come here to come and rescue them. >> reporter: cecilia vega, abc

news, new york. we're learning now details about what happened when a florida family's boat capsized, stranding them in the middle of the ocean. seven family members managed to survive 20 hours in the water. unfortunately their matriarch slipped under the water. the 4-year-old little girl in the group kept up everyone's spirits by telling her mother everything is going to be okay. a rescue is coming. a major, new study shows that many daily vitamins may actually cause more harm than good. the study looked at almost 40,000 women, ages 55 through 69, over the course of about 19 years and found that older women who took a multivitamin, b6, folic acid, magnesium, zinc or copper had a higher risk, with women taking iron, having a 3.9% increased risk of death.

meanwhile, another study is adding to the growing evidence that chocolate does a body good. swedish researchers say eating dark chocolate in moderation, which is maybe two chocolate bars a week, could reduce the risk of stroke by 20%. the benefit is believed to come from cocoa, specifically that found in dark chocolate. yes. good news. >> i agree with that study. now, to sports. it was a busy day for fans in the motor city. some felt better than others after the games were played. all of the highlights from espn news. >> good morning. i'm lindsay czarniak. this is your espn news update. we begin with the alcs. the tigers and the rangers. a thriller in arlington. bottom of the seventh. nelson cruz hits a home run to left. off the foul pole. so, the solo home run ties the game at 3-3. bottom of the 11th, however, this is history in the making. bases loaded for cruz.
