we have the latest. >> here is the candidate iowa is putting on the map. former senator rick santorum campaigning today in iowa city. >> this is your chance, heartland. this is your chance it speak out. >> until recently he was ignored by his opponents and virtually invisible in the polls. now nobody is rising faster. within striking distance of winning the iowa caucuses. he's done it the old-fashioned way spending more time traveling around the state and talking to voters than anybody else. we met up with him in marshalltown. >> i'm confident we will do well and surprise people. >> he has been helped by the collapse of newt gingrich who spent the last week complaining about negative ads and he has been hit hard here. >> he has more baggage than the airlines. >> today he lashed out at mitt romney accusing him of trying to buy the election. >> he has 3 1/2 million dollars

in negative adds. romney stayed above the fray. >> i want to restore the principles that made america great. >> michelle bachman who was born in iowa and won the straw poll in august. >> you will have an iowan it the white house. >> is at the back of the pack. she said she expects some divine help tuesday. >> i'm believing in a miracle because i know the one had gives the miracles. >> if you don't come in first, second or third can you continue? >> i'm going to be the next president of the united states of america. that is why i'm here. >> newt gingrich has tried to make a virtue of the fact he hasn't run any negative ads in iowa but he made it clear after the iowa caucuses all bets are off. you can expect to see a feistier gingrich not afraid to use
11:37 pm
television advertisements to savage his opponents. >> let's talk about the big caucus with politico. we are two days away. a lot of people are saying mitt romney has this locked up but is that the case? >> i think he has looked strong and has hit a ceiling. that is the concern. he's never really gone too far above 25%. the latest poll shows he is around that 25% so you would think if you are the front-runner you should have more than that, you should break 25% but he benefits by having this continued fight among the sort of second tier candidates in the most recent poll. you have ron paul close behind him and rick santorum not far behind. mitt romney should like nothing better than these two others to be the alternative out of iowa and into new hampshire. >> that is why a lot of people are making headlines i have seen throughout the weekend there is
11:38 pm
a santorum surge. he is surging in the polls. is there something that i'm not understanding? >> no, a lot of this computes back to the idea that conservatives are uneasy with mitt romney and they are looking for an alternative. we have seen the succession of candidates who have been ache of able to have little bounces in the polls and come up to around that level where rick santorum was. we saw michelle bachman, rick perry, newt gingrich and new santorum and romney would love to have a prolonged campaign. if he has to have a prolonged primary campaign he would like nothing better than against ron paul or rick san form or both of them because they both make him look sort of moderate and viable and like a centrist. >> in the end does all of this really matter? if we look at the numbers turnout is expected to be lower

than the last time, only 100,000 that took part the last time. so in essence say the winner gets 25% of the vote. only 25,000 people would have decided this caucus that we made a big deal about. does it really matter? >> every time we ask ourselves the same question. this is iowa, is it still relevant and particularly if ron paul can win or come in second a lot of people say ron paul doesn't have a chance to be a viable prrbl candidate so if he wins or is a strong second in this process it doesn't speak to the relevance of the caucus and you might be inclined to think that but you see an upstart like barack obama in 2008 win the iowa caucus and become president. so, you have to look at it historically and it has had a major role in presidential politics. i don't think we will see that change. >> mitt romney wins tuesday night is there any stopping him from being the nominee for the republicans? >> i almost have trouble seeing anybody stopping him even if he
11:40 pm
is strong second. if he were to be third it would raise questions but he is such a strong organization and so much better than any other kid. he has such a great outside presence where it is not just his campaign but the super pacs that are supporting him and that makes it hard for the others to compete with him. >> thanks for being with always. >> a pleasure. >> stay tuned to abc 7 news for complete coverage of the iowa caucus. scott thuman will have a live report. in alabama employers doing business with the federal government must verify all of their workers are in the runt legally. eight states raise the minimum wage including ohio and florida and rhode island and tennessee will require photo i.d.'s before they pass ballots. people in louisa county virginia
