politico. lots to talk about. this weekend was a crazy one. we saw newt gingrich win by such a large margin in south carolina. >> there were a couple of fortuitous things for newt gingrich. rick perry was out of the race and throwing his support strongly behind newt gingrich. i think a lot of social conservative voters who had been confused about who to vote for got a very strong message that that person was newt gingrich. a lot of people going after romney for his wealth and his experience at bain capital as a venture capitalist, that really hurt romney at a critical time and gingrich had to really great moments in the debate on thursday. he really showed the qualities that romney simply does not have namely the ability to get very very angry. i think that helped him a lot. >> we saw him on the sale of it
11:39 pm
there, sought a different side of him. talk about ravi on the topic of wealth. he finally came out today and said he will release his tax returns for last year this coming tuesday. has he finally put that issue to bed or has it already created too much of a problem for him? >> we will see. on thursday, he was asked if he would release more than a single year like his father did. that issue will not go away. people will be very skeptical about just one year, saying maybe this was a fluke. we want to see the full picture of this man's past and his financial wealth. i think he has a lot of questions to answer. he needs to put that to rest. tuesday will be a very good thing for him, but there is a lot of potential that this can come back and hurt him. >> on the win, was this more than just a boost for gingrich? does this put into question the electability for romney? will it take the wind out of his sales? >> 21% of the voters voted for
11:40 pm
him in south carolina. that is what he has gone in every contest until now. that is a real problem for mitt romney. he cannot get past the 30-mark consistently. that means republican voters are very unsure about him. the new twin was a very decisive win. romney need something like that in florida. it is a hard-fought battle for him. it is a difficult electorate and an expensive place to run a campaign. >> we had talked earlier that most people expect, by the time you get to florida the race is all but a done deal. it is not that way. there are still for people in this and it still seems to be anyone's game. >> absolutely. rick santorum is staying in this race because it is anyone's race. if any of these candidates are able to pull out a win going forward, this could really give them momentum to win this thing
11:41 pm
for someone like mitt romney who had hoped to kind of wrap this up by this time, but florida appeared. it will be much more expensive for him to run his campaign and it will take months and months of hits on his own colleagues before he gets the nomination and before he meets barack obama in the general election. >> there has been a lot of early ballots already cast. almost two hundred thousand. will that play in romney's favre? >> considering that he has been the front-runner, you can expect those ballots to favor him. we will see whether that helps. but on the ground, ballots on election day if newt gingrich has a decisive edge advantage, like he did in south carolina, that will matter more at the end of the day than the head start
