good friday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm paula faris. the midwest is still in the line of fire this morning after getting hammered by a deadly batch of tornadoes this week. >> the death toll now is at 13. as shell-shocked residents dome through their deponginbelonging another storm is on the way. >> reporter: overnight, they waited for round two. storms expected today cowl be worse than the system that left behind this path of destruction. >> my daughter called me, screaming, saying the house was gone. >> reporter: seven states, 750 miles. more than a dozen people were killed. survivors are picking up the pieces of their shattered lives. they're grieving the loss of loved ones.

>> my parents have known each other since they were 12 years old. my mother passed away here over there. >> reporter: amanda patrick was caught in a tornado with winds near 170 miles an hour. she lived. her friends did not. >> when i knelt on my knees -- i just asked god to see me through. >> reporter: dale lost his home. and his dog is missing. >> i don't know where she's at or -- hope she ain't in one of them piles of rubble. you never know. >> reporter: the president called the governors of six states yesterday to offer assistan assistance. the severe weather threat ramps up today. >> they contributed to a total of 115 tornadoes for january and february. approximately 50% more than normal for this time of year. >> reporter: at least nine

northern rockies. windy from southern california to new mexico. a summer-like day in florida. >> miami hits 84. atlanta 75. boston, 35. 38 in the twin cities. it's 66 in phoenix. 37 in salt lake city. near 50 in seattle. after a virtually dry winter, late-season snow has dumped more than six feet of snow in california's sierra nevada this week alone. dangerous conditions are created. an avalanche trapped a skier under the snow. rescue teams managed to pull him out. but unfortunately, he died a few hours later. grieving students head back to classes for the first time today at that ohio school where three classmates were fatally shot. the football coach that chased the gunman away spoke publicly for the first time yesterday.

controls homs. the fbi is keeping a closer watch on the internet. the agency's head says cyber crime is becoming the nation's top threat, more than terrorism. and while counterterrorism is their main purpose, they're increasing security on the internet. s.w.a.t. teams stormed a bank in buena park and were able to rescue the manager who was taken hostage. they believe it began as a robbery attempt four hours earlier. six customers in the bank were allowed to leave. the manager was held. maryland joined seven other states to legalize same-sex marriage. it's set to take effect in january. unless enough petition signatures are gathered.
