they have dipped to an average of $3.90 a gallon. >> that is down 6 cents from the peak last month. the price to fall up may dip even more. >> they are the sure-fire ways spring has arrived. rising temperatures, the return of baseball, and sky rocketing gas prices. this year, it appears gas prices may have peaked early. >> i think they are going down. >> why the spring surprise? analysts say it is due to a slowdown in china's economy and new talks with iran to it. >> the market was breathing a sigh of relief that the talks might happen. if that continues through monday, prices may decline a bit more. >> the proof is at the pump.

in michigan a gallon now costs $3.85. in chicago the cost was $5 is now down to $4. -- $4.33. if the price to fill up your car continues to drop that is also good news for frequent fliers. lower prices will calm the fears of airlines who are expected to raise their fares. not everybody is predicting that gas will go up again soon but even the worst case scenarios have prices peaking at over $4 a gallon, a far cry from $5 gasoline. >> late this week metro gave preliminary approval to new rate hikes. the maximum there will rise to

21. there is new debate about how to handle traffic congestion and northern convict -- traffic congestion -- congests june in northern virginia. it is no secret traffic in the b.c. region is notoriously bad. some believe driving less or using public transportation more are better methods of reducing congestion. >> one thing we try to do is a good thing. >> the head of transportation recently said tolls are the future. they allowed the biggest and quickest impact on managing capacity. >> my opinion is they work. >> polls are becoming a part of life in the area. there is the longstanding policy toll road. talk of creating high occupancy toll lanes on i-95 in virginia.

then there are the hot plains from springfield to the dulles toll road. that project has been named the 495 express lane. the busier the traffic, the more you will have to pay. the goal is to maintain a minimum speed of the 45 miles per hour. >> i am hoping with hot lanes being introduced people will take advantage of it and will pay little extra to get there faster with less crowding. spending hundreds of millions of dollars to put an extra lanes is going to make it more dangerous and frustrating. people will have the same problems they always have had. >> the express lanes are scheduled to open at the end of 2012 with a cost of $2 billion. >> students of act college are getting some much needed help.

>> the concern is not over the cranes or the bulldozers or even the traffic. the concern is over a new gas station slated to go in. >> with a gas station right up on this neighborhood, it is not the smartest idea in the world. >> this will not be your average gas station. costco plans a major gas station with 16 pomps. they say it poses a huge health risk and the increased traffic. some residents like the idea. >> i will use it because i think it will be cheaper than other gas stations around here. >> people who live right next to the site have been fighting against it and signs have popped up showing residents disapproval. they are hoping to get the county executive to see things their way. >> wife will erupt with a gas station? why? that is what costco once.

maryland. temperatures for the most part will be in the 60's. quantico at 66 and fredericksburg 68 degrees. well to the west that is where the nasty weather really beginning to flare up across portions of kansas. tornado reports are starting to pop. 87 confirmed tornadoes just today. wind damage around 42 reports. let's head closer to the wichita area. it is now moving off to the north and east. wins over 80 miles per hour. they are calling this a tornado emergency at this point. a lot will go on over the next couple of hours. we will keep you updated tomorrow right here on abc 7. temperatures tomorrow will warm up nicely. a few showers in the forecast.

highs around 85 degrees. slightly cool off to the west. temperatures will be in the upper 70's. monday in other warm day. temperatures around 85 degrees again. a cold front arrives early tuesday giving us another chance for a few showers. mostly cloudy tonight. 50-59 degrees. daytime temperatures around 80- 85 degrees. more sunshine into the early evening. there is the cool down behind the cold front. temperatures will fall into the upper 60's. that is near average for this time of year. a nice little treat. last week was a little chilly. cooler than what we are used to. tomorrow will warm up nicely. we will have heat and humidity on monday.
