and good wednesday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. i'm tanya rivero. paula faris is on assignment. the latest results is forcing some changes in the republican race. mitt romney won all races. delaware, connecticut, new york, pennsylvania and rhode island. >> rick santorum stopped just short of an outright romney endorsement. abc's tahman bradley has the latest on all this from washington. >> reporter: the general election is well under way. and mitt romney has claimed the mantle of republican presidential nominee. >> i can say with confidence and gratitude that you have given me a great honor and solemn responsibility. and together, we are going to win on november 6th. >> reporter: sweeping five primaries yesterday, the former massachusetts governor left behind the gop nomination battle and sharpened his attacks on president obama. >> tonight is the beginning of

the end of the disappointment of the obama years. and it's the start of a new and better chapter that we will write together. >> reporter: for his part, the president is in full campaign mode, taking his message to the younger viewers of "late night with jimmy fallon." >> now is not the time to make school more expensive for our young people. >> oh, yeah. [ laughter ] >> reporter: the president is pushing congress to extend current interest rates on student loans which are set to double, crisscrossing key battleground states of north carolina, colorado and iowa this week. mr. obama is courting young voters and trying to draw contrast with his republican rivals. without mentioning romney by name, he raised the fact that he and his wife, michelle, weren't raised in wealthy households. >> me and michelle, we know firsthand. this isn't something i read in a briefing book.

>> reporter: after yesterday's losses, the candidate says he'll take a realistic look at where things stand. rob and tanya? >> tahman bradley, thank you. another note from the president. his stop at a university of colorado watering hole turned messy when a student spilled yogurt on him. mr. obama laughed it off, telling the young woman, getting yogurt on the president, you have a story to tell. indeed. possible romney running mate, marco rubio will have extra security when he gives a speech today. extra protection has been ordered for the florida senator after a threat was made against him. there will be extra security in washington and at his home. janet napolitano is expected to face tough questions today on capitol hill over the secret service prostitution scandal. three more employees have been forced out, bringing the total to nine who have now lost their jobs after being linked to that scandal at a colombian hotel.

president obama told jimmy fallon last night that the fired agents were just a few bad apples. >> how mad were you? >> pretty mad. look, secret service, these guys are incredible. a couple knuckleheads shouldn't detract from what they do. but what these guys were thinking, i don't know. that's why they're not there anymore. >> as you might imagine, it was not all serious on the fallon show last night. we'll show you some of the funnier, lighter moments coming up later in "the pulse." there was more explosive testimony in the john edwards corruption trial. edwards' former aide testified that he and his wife were scared to death as they accepted checked as large as $150,000, marked as payment for furniture. andrew young said the money was meant to hide edwards' affair

with videographer rielle hunter. and the administration's challenge to arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants. at issue is whether the states can adopt their own immigration measures or whether immigration is the federal government's domain. a decision is expected in june. last year, the court upheld another arizona law that targeted employers that hired illegal workers. the first new case of mad cow disease in the u.s. since 2006 has been discovered in a dairy cow out in california. experts say human safety was never an issue. that's because meat from the infected cow never made it into the food supply. with more on this, here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: rarely does the health of a single cow have billion-dollar implications. but in this case, it does because it's america's first confirmed case of bovine spongiform encephalitis in six

years. bse is mad cow disease. an infection that can be transferred to humans. >> the cow was a dairy cow in california. >> reporter: the chief veterinarian officer for the usda cautions this is an isolated case, not the start of an epidemic. >> our livestock population, some of the healthiest in the world. and the consumers should be confident in our food supply. >> reporter: everyone remembers the devastating outbreak of mad cow disease in britain during the '90s. 150 people died. after the first mad cow case was confirmed in this country in 2003, dozens of countries banned u.s. beef. shipments dropped more than 80%. china still bans u.s. beef imports. the usda insists this case came at a rendering plant. but the usda only tests 40,000 cows a year of the millions that

welcome back, everybody. a former bp engineer is now facing the first criminal charges stemming from that gulf oil spill disaster. he is now charged with obstructing justice, for

allegedly deletining text messages. it said more oil was spewing into the gulf than the company first reported. he's out on bail. but facing up to 20 years in prison. two, now reports show the lingering effects of the financial crisis. home prices fell in february in most cities for a sixth-straight month. but at a slower rate. that suggests prices may be stabilizing. and the special inspector for the t.a.r.p., says that 351 small banks faced real trouble and paid back their loans. they owe taxpayers some $15 billion. very good news from apple. helped lift stock markets yesterday. the company beat even the most optimistic expectations, reporting quarterly profits of nearly $12 billion. that's nearly double what the company made in the same quarter last year. iphone sales contributed most to that very big bottom line. and the next time you go book a flight and have to choose your own seat, consider this. most passengers think 6a is the

madison to detroit. i-70 and 90 from illinois to ohio. and also, i-64 from louisville to charleston, west virginia. it will be wet on i-5, from seattle to portland. and i-84 and 90 in the northern rockies. >> and if you're taking to the skies, airport delays are possible in los angeles, san francisco, salt lake city and chicago. all right. here we go again with this story. a jetblue flight had to make an emergency landing in suburban new york city last night after at least one bird smashed into the plane's windshield. you can see the remnants there. after takeoff, the pilot radioed he had pit two big geese. >> the plane returned safely to the westchester county airport. passengers boarded another flight to west palm beach. no one onboard was hurt. a delta flight was forced to land after a bird strike last thursday. this wasn't technically a bird strike since the birds didn't go into the engine. other news this morning.

an amber alert has been issued for a 5-year-old heart patient whose father drove him away from a hospital in st. louis. parter stone is awaiting a heart transplant. he was released from st. louis children's hospital yesterday. that's when his father who is separated from porter's mother drove off with the child. police in tucson are wrapping up their search for a little girl who went missing last week. her parents say they last saw isabel mercedes celis last night. they will investigate the disappearance, rather than search for the 6-year-old. now, to detroit, where a judge is proud of his physique and not ashamed to show it off to women, even though he's married. judge wade mccree's shirtless picture was found on the cell phone by the husband of a court employee. that man says he is filing a complaint against mccree. mccree told the reporter, and i quote here, no shame to my game. >> that court is out of order. and the estranged wife of
