good morning. i'm sunny hostin. paula faris is on assignment. >> good morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. air force one is on its way back to washington now. but just after it left, the taliban launched a series of assaults in kabul. >> the deadly attack underscores the major challenges that remain in afghanistan. but during his brief visit, the commander in chief focused, instead, on what the u.s. has accomplished during the long war. we begin with abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: president obama is on his way home, after delivering the first presidential address from a war zone. during his remarks last night, the president declared that the war in afghanistan is coming to an end. >> here, in the pre-dawn darkness of afghanistan, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon. >> reporter: president obama made the secret trip to afghanistan on the anniversary of osama bin laden's death. the president took credit for a strategy that he says helped turn the tide in the decade-long

war. >> we broke the taliban's momentum. we built strong afghan security forces. the goal that i set, to defeat al qaeda and deny it a chance to rebuild, is now within our reach. >> reporter: the u.s. and its nato allies are set to hand off security to afghans by the end of 2014. but the president signed an agreement on the trip, with afghan president hamid karzai, outlining a role in afghanistan for security and development through 2024. >> the agreement we signed today sends a clear message to the afghan people. as you stand up, you will not stand alone. >> reporter: the president also greeted troops while in afghanistan, thanking them for their sacrifice and service. hours after the president departed, a reminder of the fragile security situation with an early-morning suicide attack in the capital of kabul. authorities say at least six people were killed. the president said his administration will work with

afghanistan past 2014 to determine what support they need. but there will be no permanent military bases. rob and sunny? >> end game, indeed. the president's message to afghans, that america's not bailing, despite a war that may soon be over. global affairs anchor, christiane amanpour talked about that on "nightline." >> absolutely vital that the president did what he did. that there will be an american presence, even after combat troops come home. that terribly dangerous vacuum after the soviets were defeated, led to the taliban, led to al qaeda and led to the 9/11 plot and all the violence afterward. now, the challenge for the president is to make sure that the taliban is defeated or there's a negotiated settlement. but it doesn't look like it's bearing true to the moment. there are no negotiations. and they have to have the safe havens in pakistan neutralized. and that's going to take getting the relationship between the

u.s. and pakistan back on track. it's broken right now. so, how do they fly the world's most recognizable plane right into an active war zone? well, abc news has a reporter with the president who says few people knew about the trip. they showed up late monday night to a back gate at andrews air force base, finding a dark air force one. the seven-hour stay in afghanistan, coordinated so the plane would arrive and take off in darkness. you can read more behind the scenes of the clandestine mission at abcnews.com. some republicans accused the president of making a campaign-style visit to afghanistan, his chief rival was a bit more measured. the romney campaign issued a statement saying that romney was pleased the president had returned to afghanistan. that the troops and the american people deserve to hear from the president, what is at stake in the war. he had promised a political fight all the way to tampa. but today, newt gingrich ends his presidential campaign. gingrich says he will continue to travel with his wife, making

speeches to defeat president obama. the romney campaign and the republican national committee have offered to help pay off gingrich's debt. there are some major developments in the case of that chinese dissident who escaped house arrest last week. a senior u.s. official says chen guangcheng has arrived at a medical facility where he will receive treatment and be reunited with his family. china is asking for an apology from the u.s. for protecting him. lots of tension, just as high-level talks between chinese officials and secretary of state hillary clinton begin. she arrived in beijing overnight. occupy protesters have reemerged, joining may day demonstrators in dozens of cities across the country and the world. some of the wildest clashes took place in oakland, california, overnight. police there used tear gas to disperse an anti-wall street crowd. they fired tear gas at demonstrators hours earlier and

made several arrests. things also got out of hand here in new york, as activists call an end for income inequality and housing foreclosures. after confrontations ended in arrest, thousands of people later gathered for a peaceful demonstration. five men described as homegrown terrorists are now under arrest in ohio for plotting to blow up a bridge. investigators described the suspects as anarchists who were fed up with corporate america and the federal government. there was never any real danger, though, since the men had been unknowingly working with an fbi informant for months before their arrest. if convicted of the bridge plot, the men could face up to 25 years behind bars. time, now, for the weather from across the nation. severe storms with hail and high winds from the plains into the upper midwest. all the way to pittsburgh and d.c. near record highs across the south. thunderstorms from florida to mississippi. showers in the dakotas. pacific northwest and northern

welcome back, everybody. wall street trading opens today on a four-year high. the dow reached 13,279 yesterday for the first time since december 2007. that was the first month, actually, of the great recession. lifting the market is news that u.s. manufacturing grew faster than expected last month. new orders, production and one measure of hiring were also up. retirement accounts are up, too. the average 401(k) rose from over $69,000 in december, to $74,600 in march. that's an increase of about 8%. the market rally accounted for most of the increase. but workers put aside more. and employers matched it. the good news for the u.s. markets is lifting stocks overseas, as well. tokyo's nikkei average gained 29 points today. hong kong's hang seng was up 251 points in late trading. and in london, the ftse opened higher. investors are marking their calendars for may 18th.

"the wall street journal" reports that's the day facebook stock will go on sale to the public for the very first time. on monday, company executives begin meetings to promote the sale. the ipo is expected to raise $5 million. and facebook's new campaign to boost organ donation has exceeded expectations. just hours after chief executive mark zuckerberg revealed on "good morning america" that the site's 900 million users can share their donor status and link with state databases, californ california's registry says its donor signup has soared 800%. >> that's great news. and the social security administration is going online. the department used to mail workers an annual statement, estimating how much they could expect when they retire. it's all online. you can go to ssa.gov, to create

a dangerous stunt. they were caught towing their 7-year-old granddaughter in a toy car attached to their suv with two dog leashes. the child was not wearing a helmet. both grandparents were sfwox intoxicated. the grandfather was driving about 10 miles per hour on a paved access road. the child was not hurt. >> what were they thinking? a new jersey mom is in trouble with the law. she's accused of taking her 5-year-old daughter in a tanning booth. patricia crenfield was arrested for child endangerment. the mom insists her daughter sits outside the booth while she tans. >> i never, once in my life, would let my daughter, especially at that age, go into a tanning booth. >> my lord. taken into the booth without the

salon's knowledge. we'll have much more on this story later today on "good morning america." that picture kind of says it all. >> yes, it does. some harsh blame is being placed for an air traffic control error in hawaii, that put two jets on a collision course. it happened at honolulu's airport in january. an air traffic controller had put a japan airline 767 and a u.p.s. jet on the same flight path. they were at the same altitude and came within two miles of each other. the report says it was all the fault of an inexperienced controller who had only been fully certified for a couple of weeks. he was then offered more training. and a fire has damaged at least one building at the tyler perry studios in atlanta. the fire broke out around 9:00 last night. it took firefighters about an hour to put it out. the complex includes the 200,000-square-foot studio where perry makes his hit films. no injuries. no word on what started the

fire. more american teens are spoking pot. that's according to a report that will be released this morning. a quarter of them used marijuana last year. that's up 8% from just four years ago. also, nearly one in ten teens is lighting up at least 20 times a month. the study finds abuse of prescription medicines, though, easing just slightly. and here's something to think about on your commute. a new report from the society of automotive engineers finds a staggering number of us do not use turn signals, causing 2,000 accidents every year. we fail to signal half the time we're changing lanes. and fail a quarter of the time to let people know we're making a turn. scary. time, now, from sports. we get the latest highlights from espn. >> good morning. i'm zubin mehenti. the bulls lost home court advantage to the sixers. game two in chicago. d.j. watson has been rose's
