this morning, deadly outbreak. >> there's a race to find a source of mysterious new cases of e. coli sweeping the south with fears the outbreak could spread. wild weather. tornadoes from colorado to new jersey. a giant funnel cloud looming over a high school graduation in the garden state. violent outburst. it's the talk of europe this morning. a male politician hitting a woman on live tv. >> wow. and you can bet mr. rogers would never do that. but you've also never seen or heard him quite like this.

and good morning, everybody. happy friday. a new outbreak of the e. coli illness has food safety investigators now scrambling to find the cause. >> they say the deadly outbreak likely came from something we eat, perhaps produce or undercooked beef. that's a special concern given the start of grilling season. abc's tahman bradley has the details from washington. >> reporter: this morning, disease-hunters at the cdc are racing to find a mysterious and deadly, new outbreak of e. coli. nearly a dozen cases, possibly more, detected across the south. including in the cdc's own backyard near georgia. other cases in florida, louisiana and alabama. scientists scrambling to stop the spread. >> they're racing against the clock because they want to figure out what this product is and get it out of the market before it sickens or kills anyone else. >> reporter: the youngest victim of the outbreak so far, a toddler, just 21 months old, in new orleans, who died last week. she and the other victims are believed to have been sickened

by the same strain of e. coli. >> we know that these cases are all linked. and that would suggest that there was a common source somewhere along the way. we just don't know where. >> reporter: not all strains of e. coli are dangerous. but this one is. it carries the 0145 genetic fingerprint, which produces a deadly toxin, that can cause violent reaction, kidney damage and death. undercooked chicken or beef are often the source of these outbreaks. so, with the outdoor summer barbecue season underway, officials are reminding people to wash their hands after handling poultry. cook chicken and beef, especially beef, thoroughly. it's not clear that this is a foodborne outbreak. but still, people should remain vigilant. tahman bradley, abc news. >> a summertime warning. we turn to a disturbing report that shows suicide among u.s. troops is growing faster than at any other time in a decade of war. the toll is downright stunning. 154 suicides in the first 155

days of this year. that is nearly one a day. and more than 50% more than the number of troops killed in action in afghanistan. some of the studies show that combat increases the risk of suicide, especially multiple tours of duty. however, sexual assault, substance abuse and domestic violence are also risk factors, as well. >> tragic numbers there. there's a scandal brewing over president obama's no, ma'am to eric. now, someone has leaked intimate e-mails he exchanged with "wall street journal" reporter gina chan in 2008. they are raising questions about whether he revealed secret information to chan. or if he is disciplined enough to run the largest embassy in the world. republican challenger mitt romney raised more campaign cash last month than the president. the romney campaign brought in 76 million bucks in may, compared to $60 million for the president. romney's earning more now.

he, of course, will be the nominee. but it he's expected to benefit from super pacs, more than the ones favoring the democrats. secretary of state hillary clinton holds high-level meetings in washington today on the worsening violence in syria. they have come under fire after they went to the site of a massacre. witnesses say 80 people were found shot and stabbed in that mass killing. and politics in greece has turned violent. take a look at this drama that unfolded on live morning television. a politician lunged at two left-wing politicians. throwing water at one. smacking the other across the face several times. after the event, the show has been getting. the outburst was a first for greek tv. >> we assume charges have to be coming some time soon. unbelievable. a prominent kansas tom family of six has died in a

plane crash in florida. they were flying a small plane home from the bahamas. his wife and four children were with him. but something went wrong and the plane went down in a swamp. their stunned friends and family have been gathering at their home. >> we miss the whole family. we're waiting for them to pull up right now. but not going to happen. this is a place where everybody came, had dinner, stayed. >> the plane went down about 50 miles from orlando in an area only reachable by helicopter and all-terrain vehicles. graduation day ended with a bang at a school in new jersey. but not like anyone expected. check this out. the ceremony was just wrapping up last night when a funnel cloud formed near the football field, filled with graduates. they barely had a chance to throw their caps in the air before thunder, lightning and rain sent the students and spectators running for cover.

several people suffered minor injuries. and after several days of severe storms some states out west finally get a break today. up to ten tornadoes were reported yesterday in wyoming and eastern colorado. funnel clouds moved in, blowing out windows. and large hail shattering windshields. here's a look at the quarter-mile-wide twister that touched down in southeastern wyoming yesterday. more than a dozen homes were damaged. one person was injured. the area pummeled by heavy rain and hail the size of golf balls. >> spring is ending with a bang. weeks of this now. let's take a look at weather across the country to start your weekend. that severe weather shifts to the upper midwest today, from minnesota to michigan. scattered showers and thunderstorms in new england and upstate new york. also, stormy from florida to texas. showers in the pacific northwest. >> 60s in seattle and portland. and 102 in phoenix. mostly 80s for the rest of the country, from the rockies into the midwest and the east coast.

mortgage is 3.67%, the lowest ever for long-term mortgages. 15-year loans are 2.94%, also a record. low rates have been a key factor in the housing industry's modest improvement. you have to get your home appraised first. well, the fed is sitting tight, watching and waiting. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke says the central bank is ready to step in. but not just yet. he told congress yesterday he expects the u.s. economy to continue its modest growth without any further help from the fed. but that's not what the markets wanted to hear. tokyo's nikkei average plunged 180 points today. hong kong's hang seng was down 151. in london, the ftse opened higher, then fell. on wall street, the dow was up 46 points yesterday, after bernanke's comments shut short a bigger rally. the nasdaq lost 14. the music streaming service

lastf.m. is not saying how many accounts were affected. but it is telling users to change its passwords. it follows similar hacks of linkedin and eharmony. virgin mobile usa will sell the iphone at $550. the cost of the device itself is higher, virgin's prepaid service starts at 30 bucks a month. over a two-year period, users would save $800 over at&t and verizon prices. >> enticing. and there is no escape from commercials. yeah. an israeli company is testing a system that plays ads on public bathroom mirrors. it's already installed in tel aviv. and a french mall will get them later this month. and the company hopes to expand right here to the u.s. some time soon. can't we all just tinkle in peace without ads? >> some privacy. >> privacy, ads in the bathroom.

well, it could be a wild summer at cape cod. this 200-pound bear is on the loose, believed to be the first ever to set foot on the peninsula. it's been spotted on a golf course, in a chicken coop and up a tree. officials believe the bear took a swim in from the mainland or walked over one of the two bridges that lead to the cape. it's the talk of all the communities out there. and has hundreds of followers now on twitter. of course it does.

>> if he swam, it was about 500 feet. >> not bad. a fit bear. now, for a look at morning road conditions. a slick ride at times in the northeast, from upstate new york to new england. wet from florida to texas. and thunderstorms and drenching highways from minnesota to michigan. >> if you're flying today, airport delays are possible in beantown, new orleans, and houston. now, to that legal battle pitting former professional football players against the nfl. this is the biggest lawsuit in the history of sports. >> huge story here. thousands of players are claiming the league kept them in the dog about the danger of repeated head injuries. abc's karen travers has more. >> reporter: hard knocks are a major part of the nfl. bone-crushing plays like this dominate the highlight reels. and have helped make pro football the nation's most popular sport. but it's the nfl that's taking a hit. more than 2,000 former players are suing the league in a landmark class-action lawsuit. the players claim the nfl misled

them for decades about the risks of brain injury. kevin turner played fullback for the philadelphia eagles. and can remember just two documented concussions. he believes he suffered long-term brain damage. and is one of the former players filing suit. >> this action is about the retired players getting the help that they need. >> reporter: in may, former san diego charger star, junior seau, committed suicide in his home. another high-profile death that raised questions about the sport's dangers. the former players say in their lawsuit that the nfl exacerbated the health risk by promoting the game's violence. and deliberately and fraudulently concealed the link between concussions and long-term brain damage. the league says it's made players' safety a top priority. and any allegation that the nfl intentionally sought to mislead players has no merit. the former players are seeking damages and asking the nfl to

set up a monitoring system for players with potential brain disorders. rob and paula, back to you. >> thanks, karen, for that report. a new government study finds more kids are smoking pot than cigarettes. the cdc reports 23% of high school students said they recently smoked marijuana, while just 18% said they've had a cigarette. one expert said kids see pot as less dangerous than tobacco. and take a look at this. a train operator in new york is in trouble after this video surfaced of him reading the newspaper while behind the controls of a speeding train. a worried commuter took the two-minute video as the train barreled towards new york's grand central station. the engineer has been suspended without pay. >> makes you think about all the times we don't see that. >> we put our trust in these guys. also from the new york area, excitement is growing for this weekend's belmont stakes. that's where i'll have another will attempt to become the first

lesson on how grit and determination can pay off big. >> north carolina teen, dawn loggins is heading to harvard. but two years ago, dawn was homeless, living as a squatter with her family. she missed so much school at the time, she was listed as a dropout. and last summer, her parents abandoned her. picked up and left. and dan did not give up. that perseverance has gotten her into harvard. >> i'm really proud. when i stood up -- it's amazing. it feels great to have all the hard work that i put into this to finally be realized. >> amazing is the word. dawn worked as a custodian at her school to support herself. after looking at the neglect and drug abuse in her family, she made a decision not to end up like her parents. bravo to her. love that story. well, another story of amazing perseverance. the man who served five years in prison for a crime he didn't
