hi, everyone. i'm jimmy. thank you, everyone, for coming. that's very fine. i hope we have some spelling bee enthusiasts in the house tonight? do we? who doesn't love spelling? you know, we don't have many traditions here on the show, we have at least one that is every year, the scripps national spelling bee, these kids who win the spelling bee, every year the winner comes to visit and compete with me. i'm a very good speller. i spell like the wind. tonight we will hold our ninth annual "jimmy kimmel live" annual spelling bee. she is 14-year-old girl her name is snigdha nandipati. every spelling came from an explosion at a scrabble factory. snigdha is a formidable opponent. she won the spelling bee by

spelling j-woww with two "w"s at the end. she did not. maybe, snigdha could do well help pg mitt romney. mitt romney has had some spelling issues lately. the last week alone his campaign made three relatively prominent spelling errors on their election materials. on tuesday, the romney campaign app with mitt and this was one of the images. the better amercia. he meant america. but maybe he's running from amercia, too. over the weekend, romney's facebook page offered his supporters lot of people make the mistake sneak peak. it's supposed to be two "e"s. this button appeared on his facebook page. pay closer attention to this sort of stuff. it keeps happening. tv ads too. >> america faces enormous cha langes.

[ cheers and applause ] want to know the weirdest part of it, that guy doesn't work with the show. i have no idea who that was. there's another strange thing out of the netherlands today. a space launch company called mars 1, colony on mars starting in the near 2023. they're going to send a crew of four astronauts once every two years for total of 20 people by the year 2033 and none of them will be coming back. they're going to live on mars permanently. this is my favorite part, to fund the mission, they're going to turn it into a reality show. put cameras up there and watch them living -- it would be like the marsy shore. normally on reality shows people arguing about peanut butter.

[ laughter ] in another news, there is a once in a lifetime solar event today called the transit of venus. this is a rare event. you can see here, venus appears as the little black dot that's slowly, very slowly, crossing the sun. you don't hear much about -- everyone wants to go to mars. it's the myspace of planets, really. this whole thing happened in the sky today, which you may remember is a place you see when you're not staring down at your iphone. the next transit of venus won't happen for another 105 years. which is problematic for me because i'm planning to be dead by then so i will miss it but luckily, i tivoed the whole thing. we talked about this last night on the show. the miss usa took place on long
