good wednesday morning, everybody. eight, young men will tell their stories about what they allege jerry sandusky did to them when they were just little boys. >> and if they are all as emotional as the first was to testify, the trial of the former football coach will be gut-wrenching. abc's diana perez has the details. >> reporter: jerry sandusky was loved and respected at penn state. but at home, the defense witness known as victim one, told jurors he was a sexual predator. a pedophile that hand-picked boys from his second mile charity. victim one, an 18-year-old, described the abuse in sobbing detail. sobbing as he told jurors that the first time sandusky performed oral sex on him, he was just 11. after rubbing, cracking my back, and rubbing his hands down back of my shorts and blowing on my stomach, he put his mouth on my privates. he said the incidents happened on nights he slept at the

sandusky home. jurors teared up. put their head in their hands. victim one continued. except this time, he sat there and looked at me. and said something along the lines of, it's your turn. he made me -- he made me put my mouth on his privates. >> when someone violates you, it alters your dna. it changes you from the person you were, to the person you have to be, which is a person who has to live with this horrific atrocity. >> reporter: the alleged victim told his mother and a guidance counselor in 2008, which led to the investigation. during cross-examination, the defense tried to poke holes in his story, questioning discrepancies in his timeline. >> whether it was 12 times, or 20 times or 70 times, it shouldn't have happened once. >> reporter: mike mcqueary, a former assistant coach testified that in 2001, he saw sandusky with a young boy who was propped up against a wall in a shower and heard a skin-on-skin

smacking sound. he tried to make noise. but didn't do anything to physically stop the encounter. victim one testified that when he initially reported the alleged abuse to his school, he was urged to not go to the authorities. rob and paula? >> diana, thank you for that report. and now, we turn to politics and an emotional win last night in the state of arizona. >> ron barber, the former district director for gabby giffords has won a special election to fill her seat. >> giffords had backed barber and campaigned for him over the weekend. abc's tahman bradley has more. >> reporter: a bittersweet victory for democrats in an arizona special election to replace gabby giffords. democrat ron barber, a former aide to giffords, defeated jesse kelly to win his boss' old congressional seat. >> life takes unexpected turns. and here we are. >> reporter: it was a milestone in giffords' journey, nearly five months after retiring from congress, to focus on recovering from an assassination attempt. >> thank you, gabby, for everything.

everything you have done for us and will still do for us. >> reporter: the former congresswoman stayed out of the campaign for the most part. but barber, also wounded in the january 2011 shooting, got a hand from giffords this past weekend. >> thank you for your support. >> thank you for your support. >> thank you very much. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: democrats and republicans were both eager to show that momentum is on their side, ahead of the november general election. republican kelly tried to tie barber to president obama. and democrats used kelly's tea party status and path statements about overhauling social security and medicare against him. >> each party is hungry in june, have a story of winning and victory to sell to the american public as they head into the fall campaign season. >> reporter: the victory could not come at a better time for democrats and president obama, who suffered a bruising loss in a wisconsin recall election last week. and a regrouping after republicans and mitt romney outpaced him in fund-raising last month. rob and paula? >> all right, tahman. thanks a lot. the suspect in the auburn

university shooting has now turned himself in. desmonte leonard had been the subject of an intense manhunt, since three men were shot to death saturday night, not far from the auburn campus. the police chief says the shooting was a tragedy for all of the families involved. >> in a case like this, there's no relief because those boys aren't coming home tonight. at the same time, you know, mr. lend's gmr. mr. leonard's got a momma. and i'm sure she's grieving, as well. >> leonard will make a court appearance either today or tomorrow. two former auburn football players were among those killed saturday night. overseas, now. and a dangerous new escalation in syria. secretary of state hillary clinton says there's evidence that russia is sending attack helicopters to the syrian government. there had been hopes that the russians would be part of a diplomatic solution to the crisis. the issue is certain to increase tensions, as president obama prepares to meet russian

president putin next week. a victim of the japanese tsunami has been reunited with a special family memento. this buoy traveled across the pacific ocean to alaska after the disaster. it's actually inscribed with the name of her husband who died 30 years ago. it had been part of a sign in front of the family's dive shop. the woman says the return of the buoy is a sign that her husband wanted to return home. oh. i like that. >> continue to hear stories like that. >> for months to come. time for a look at weather across the country on this wednesday morning. we do have some morning rain along boston, philly and new york. and pop-up thunderstorms from the carolinas and florida and much of the gulf coast. storms could be severe at times from the texas panhandle up to wichita and omaha. showers from washington state into the northern rockies. also, heating up in the southwest. >> they could use some rain out west. a scorching 105 in phoenix. and 92 in albuquerque. 60s in the pacific northwest. mostly 70s in the midwest.

this morning from one of the titans of wall street. jpmorgan chase ceo jamie dimon testifies on capitol hill today, he'll say he's sorry about his bank's huge trading mistake. that cost jpmorgan chase 2 billion bucks. the bank has taken steps to make sure it won't happen again. but they'll also say mistakes do happen. >> that was a big mistake. jobs for teens are disappearing. fewer than three in ten now hold jobs from june to august. that's the lowest level since world war ii. one reason is older workers are taking away many of the lower-skilled jobs that once went to teens. the other is more enrichment opportunities for kids who can afford them. but they might want to save their money for college because those costs are soaring. the average division at a four-year public university is up 15% in two years. maybe because of state budget cuts. penn state's increases were the

biggest. there's significant hikes at private schools. >> all of the student loan debt we see over there. overseas markets are higher in choppy trading, reflecting the uncertainty about europe's financial woes. tokyo's nikkei average rose 51 points today. hong kong's hang seng was up 83. and in london, the ftse opened higher. on wall street, the dow gained 163 points yesterday. the nasdaq index was up 33. and for the first time, families will be able to share their wireless data packages. verizon is introducing family data plans. it's a first for the wireless industry. similar to the sharing of minutes and text messages allowed on other family plans. but it may end up costing them more in the long run. >> can you hear me now, yeah? >> i can. >> can you? >> i can. >> got that settled. next on this wednesday morning, out of the shadows. we're actually seeing george zimmerman's wife for the first time, as she faces some legal troubles of her own.

morning. new legal troubles in the high-profile george zimmerman case. he, of course, is the shooter of trayvon martin. >> zimmerman's wife has been arrested for lying about the couple's finances. >> reporter: after posting just $1,000 bond, shellie zimmerman is back out of jail and once again in hiding. she is the wife of george zimmerman and is now being charged with perjury, after prosecutors say she lied after making this statement over the phone during zimmerman's original hearing back in april. >> do you have any estimate how much money already has been obtained. >> i do not. >> reporter: but bank records and jailhouse telephone recordings between the couple tell a different story. state prosecutors put out this warrant for her arrest. and in it, they say shellie not only knew how much was in zimmerman's paypal account, but that she transferred more than $74,000 from his account to

hers, in the days leading up to the bond hearing. and the couple discussed the situation over the phone. and when george found out she transferred more than $85,000 from her account back to his. our legal analyst is not surprised prosecutors went after her. >> this is too high profile a case to let someone get away with lying to the court. >> reporter: and shellie zimmerman had no problem posting the small bond. she was in and out of the jail here in less than an hour, before she disappeared without a trace. that's the latest from sanford, florida. kenneth craig, abc news. casey anthony has broken her silence with a rare interview. anthony and her attorney spoke to piers morgan by phone. telling him, she spends her days indoors, cooking, cleaning and reading and watching tv. she is ashamed of the person she was. but denied murdering 2-year-old caylee. >> i said one of the biggest misconceptions? she said, there's several misconceptions.

obviously, i didn't kill my daughter. she said that very firmly. if anything, there's nothing in this world i've been more proud of. and there's no one i loved more than my daughter. she's my greatest accomplishment. >> anthony is reading "the hunger games." that trilogy. she said that caylee was, quote, her greatest accomplishment in life. shocking video out of texas. a toddler winds up at the center of a dangerous police chase. >> reporter: officers in lubbock were chasing four teen robbery suspects, when the suspect's car flipped over, throwing an 18-month-old girl out of the back window. you see the child in that red sweatshirt, stand up and run to the car, before someone gets up and scoops her up. the teens, ages 14 to 17, were later arrested. amazingly, that little girl only suffered minor injuries. some people just shouldn't have children. now, to oklahoma city and the nba finals.

since world war ii. now, tiger woods didn't even make it until he was 15. zhang moved here from china four years ago and didn't know a word of english. >> tiger's such an underachiever. >> he is. >> now, he is playing with bubba watson and tiger himself. zhang admits it's all just a little surreal. >> well, yeah. this morning, i was like, wow. i just shook tiger's hand. i came here. can i go on to the range and ask them for the autographs? no, you're giving out autographs. >> playing with the big boys. zhang does not look like your average ninth grader. he's six feet tall. and maybe the braces are a dead giveaway. luckily, he took the head gear off. >> but those braces, still had that classic tiger smile. keep on playing, kid. we told you earlier that college costs are soaring these days. but here's a little consolation for students out there.

updating our top stories now. today is the third day of testimony in the child molestation trial of former penn state coach, jersey sandusky. some jurors actually cried tuesday while listening to one of the alleged victims on the stand. the wife of trayvon martin shooter, george zimmerman, has been released on $1,000 bail after being arrested for lying about the couple's finances, telling the judge they had limited funds when they had more than $100,000. and the candidate hand-picked by gabby giffords to run for her congressional seat has won. ron barber had been on giffords' staff and was injured in the famous assassination attempt against her. rain in the northeast. thunderstorms in the carolinas to houston. stormy around dallas, wichita and omaha. and finally from us this morning, a well-deserved standing ovation for a california teenager who made

good on a very ambitious promise. >> the paralyzed high school senior vowed to walk at his graduation. and he did not let anything stand in his way. we have more, now, from preston phillips of our san diego affiliate. >> reporter: for the last three years, patrick ivanson has undergone six hours a day of intense physical therapy. and hopes he would walk to his diploma, the day of his high school graduation. >> oh, it's got all of america expecting me to get through this. >> reporter: nearly 17 years ago, when patrick was just 14 months old, he suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed when a driver backed over him in his car. >> it happened in an instant. the car backed up suddenly. it clipped him, knocked him down. >> reporter: it didn't keep him down. it had the opposite effect. by age 8, patrick had learned to surf. by age 18, patrick was adaptive surfing in the u.s. open of surfing. >> it was one of the best days of my life.

>> reporter: that was until tuesday night, when patrick lived up to that big promise he made three years ago. >> it's going to be a really cool moment. a really cool moment. >> reporter: and it was. after his name was announced -- >> patrick a. ivison. >> reporter: patrick, with the help of his trainer and custom walker, stood up and walked. walked clear across the stage, to his waiting diploma. the crowd rose to their feet. [ cheers and applause ] encouraging him, every step of the way. patrick's service dog followed closely behind, receiving an award there shortly after. now, patrick says he has a new goal. >> maybe do jumping jacks at college graduation or something like that. i don't know. let's not put that for sure. i can't commit to that one. >> oh. what a nice kid. oh. good story. man.
