the president is a busy man with the campaign in full swing. so the opportunity to get a one- on-one interview is rare and time with president obama is short. we will show you the entire interview. if senior political reporter scott thuman returns with more. >> i think he summed it up well. these opportunities do not come along every day so we try to cover as many topics as we could during our brief time. the president was in a good mood having just finished up a rally so he gave us some playful answered. but also got a very serious when we talked about mitt romney prompting a new barge of attack ads. >> mr. president. >> thank you so much. great to see. >> let's talk about enthusiasm. big crowd today. at the same time, polling indicates maybe the fire and the belly is not as intense for some voters especially young voters. are you worried at all about the novelty wearing off some

enthusiasm drop? >> obviously 2008, your first time around, in some ways it was a lightning and a bottle. there were so many young people who automatically just got involved. we have gone through 3.5 tough years. the economy is tough, especially for the young people. and yet what i have been incurred about is here in virginia and across the country we are still seeing tons of volunteers getting involved. a lot of passion. a lot of interest. and i think the reason is they understand this election is more important than 2008. the choice, in terms of the direction we need to take the country, is very stark this time and so the stakes are big and a lot of people want to finish what we started. >> talk about your first two years. is there anything you believe you failed at not because congress would not play ball but rests squarely on your shoulders? >> look, ultimately, when you

are president, you are always responsible, even if you have an uncooperative congress. we are proud of the work we did to make sure we did not slip into a great depression. created 4.5 million new jobs. bring manufacturing and the auto industry back on its feet. there were a bunch of things we did not get done that i think are important. make sure we get comprehensive immigration reform. we have done some things administratively but i have got to help to bring the parties together to do that. >> that is congressional. what about you? >> you know, the truth is is that the things i can do without congress tend to be in foreign policy. in that area, i have not been able to move the peace process forward in the middle east the way i wanted. it is something we focused on very early. but the truth of the matter is is that the parties alternately they have to want it as well we have got a lot of work to do.

especially rebuilding our middle class in this country. but altman, it will require people to come together and congress working together with the executive branch. >> what about bain capital? romney's campaign said he left in 1999. yours says 2001. is he being dishonest with the american public? >> here is what i know. we were talking about responsibility. as president, it is pretty clear to me that i am responsible for folks who are working in the federal government. harry truman said the buck stops here. now, my understanding is that mr. romney attested to the fcc multiple times that he was the chairman, ceo, and president of bain capital. and i think most americans figure if you are the chairman, ceo, and president of the company that you are responsible for what the company does. ultimately, mr. romney will have

to answer those questions. because if he aspires to be present, one of the things you learned is you are responsible for the conduct of your operations. but again, that is probably a question he will have to answer. i think that is a legitimate part of the campaign. >> do you think he should answer that soon? >> at sonia sotomayor occurred >> let's ask you -- switch -- gears. talk about the campaign trail. what do absolutely love about campaigning and what do you hate they cannot say being away from your family? >> what i love this the interactions with people. it is interesting. sometimes washington reporters are surprised when they see me out of washington. and i am with folks not just in virginia but when we travel in ohio on a bus tour and you are stopping in a local borrower are going to a vfw hall.

this morning i had the chance to sit down with three and credible military spouses. it gives you such energy and inspiration to hear about their lives, how they think about their kids their futures. they are just good, decent people. it gives you a lot of optimism. the thing i hate most, other than being away from the family is you know, sometimes, when you are on the road, you end up eating an awful lot of stuff that tastes really good at the time but later on the day can catch up with you. i'm now getting to the age were being in my own bed as opposed to some other bad is not always great for my back. >> it matters. all right. here is my final question. i asked tim kaine this a couple
