tonight on "nightline," a family divided. the siblings, mother, and children of michael jackson are at the center of apparent turmoil with mysterious tweets about a missing person, conflicting reports about the well-being of michael's mother and a conflict between janet and michael's daughter paris. not a movie. christian bale, the star of the batman franchise makes a surprise visit to the wounded victims of the theater massacre that happened ones had film's opening night. we'll have the latest from aurora, colorado, and look at the new normal inside theaters nationwide in the wake of this

tragedy. and a legendary legacy of olympic gold. we'll go do cuba to see tiny boxers fighting for glory at age 6. good evening, i'm bill weir. there was nothing ordinary about michael jackson, not his talents or lifestyle, or his family. both those who share his upbringing and the children he sheltered from their glare. three years his death, public rifts are forming in the jackson family. after a weekend in which michael's mother was erroneously reported missing, abc's nick watt sorts out the latest details.

>> reporter: the jackson kids were coming home from summer school. following them home, uncles randy and jermaine and janet. cordial at first, but not for long. >> it was an ambush of sorts. they wanted the children to come with them. turned into yelling, aggression. >> janet jackson slapped paris jackson in the face. after the slap, janet told her, you're a spoiled little bitch. paris jackson retaliated slapped janet jackson back, get the f out of here. >> can you can see janet trying to grab her cellphone. >> i believe it was because of the tweets. >> reporter: she's still tweeting about missing her grandparents. so help me god i will make whoever did this pay. the sheriff's department describes this as -- >> a minor scuffle between two jackson members.

>> reporter: tmz describes this as -- >> a scene from "the jerry springer show." trent punched jermaine jackson in the mouth. >> reporter: tonight randy gave his version on msnbc. >> yesterday we did go to the home to let paris and prince know that they can visit or talk to their grandma at any time. we felt someone was trying to twist the story and make it as though we were the problem denying them access to their grandma. when we got to the home, we were denied access to our own home. >> there's a lot of anger and frustration built on top of the sadness of michael's loss, the billions of dollars that are now coming into the estate. fueling this craziness. >> reporter: kathryn's nephew trent reported her missing. paris tweeted early sunday, my

grandmother and missing. i want her home now. >> jermaine, incredulous, explained she's resting on doctor's order and a photograph surfaced showing her playing cards, looking relaxed and happy. but he didn't explain why she still hasn't spoken to the kids. today brother marlon described the situation on "the insider." >> we have not talked with her and i i don't know where my mother is. i don't know where my mother is. >> i think michael's siblings all have different motives. some care about the kids. some want the money that go with the kids. some want the money. some like getting in the middle of it and scuffling. >> reporter: last week, they signed a stunning letter to the exec tors of michael's will, crying conspiracy over the will,

calling the will fake, flawed. >> your actions are affecting her health, she had a mini stroke. tito withdrew his signature and joined them the marton, jackie and la toya camp. >> i can't speak for them. i don't know what's motivating them, but money is not a bad guess. >> reporter: they have demands the exec tors resign. >> safe to say they will not stand down because the siblings who were left out of michael's will want them to. >> the exec tors deny all accusations and say any doubt about the will were debunked two years ago when the challenge was rejected by multiple courts. three years ago, the m.j. estate was deep in debt, you about the king of pop has earned nearly a billion dollars since his death. the estate provides for katherine jackson and pays her

around $70,000 a year. when the kids come of age, it's all theirs, and michael's siblings get nothing. >> you're going to be in a movie. is this something you've known you want to do for a while? >> yeah, i love acting. >> reporter: late last year paris broke the news she'd landed a movie role and auntie janet doesn't sound stoked. >> you at 12 had a very interesting experience. do you share that kind of advice with her? >> i told her, i said, you should really take this time to enjoy your youth to the fullest. you waste so much of your childhood in this industry. >> janet's fol sofy, michael didn't want his babies in the spotlight too young. he lamented losing his own youth. >> i remember going to the recording studio, there was a park across the street and i'd see the children playing and i would cry.

premier of "dark knight rises" in aurora, colorado, the definition of shoot them up thriller was changed bite nonfiction violence in front of them. as families and communities reel with pain and loss, the film's star stepped out of character and into their shattered lives for a few moments today. while others found that a trip to the movies, the most american of escape havens has changed. but now and for how long? here is abc's david wright. >> reporter: today was the sort of stealth for which the caped crusader is famous, christian bale, the actor who plays batman quietly made hospital rounds in aurora, no camera crew in tow or tip-off to the media, the only clear photos at the hospital on the cell phones of survivors all of them denying requests tonight. brought by ambulance from another hospital to meet him. >> reporter: are you a batman fan?

>> i am. >> reporter: yesterday she told us she is understandably conflicted not just about batman, but movies in general given what she has been through. an iraq war veteran, she survived deployment to baghdad unscathed only to be shot at the movies in her hometown. she was there with a group of co-workers from red robin, including alex sullivan. >> tell me where he is. find my son. i don't know where he is. okay, somebody find him and call us. tell him to call us. >> reporter: the guy whose father frantically searched the hospitals in vain friday, his son's 27th birthday only to learn his son had been murdered. >> sully is kind of goofy, happy-go-lucky type of guy. the funny thing is he didn't tell anybody it was his birthday. >> reporter: today christian bale stopped briefly at the memorial to alex sullivan and the 11 others killed in the shooting he had issued a statement over the weekend. words cannot express the horror i feel. today he saw that horror up close.

today there was one bit of redeeming news, a healthy baby boy, born this morning, hugo jackson medley. his parents were at the movie theater when the shooting broke out. his mom nine months pregnant, uninjured. his dad lost an eye and is still fighting for life in the same hospital his son was born. and tonight, disturbing new details are emerging from inside the county jail where the man accused of causing this carnage is being held. sources tell abc's local affiliate kmgh that when the suspect was first brought in, they put plastic bags on his hands to preserve gunpowder res d idue, the suspect started using them as sock pockeuppets. >> the first question they have to ask themselves does he understand what is going on. if they believe he doesn't, then they can make a motion to declare him incompetent to even stand trial, at least for now. >> reporter: in the aftermath of

the shooting, there have been several movie-related scares. >> security concerns shut down a showing of "the dark knight rises." last night in new jersey, a theater showing of "the dark knight rises" was brief plea evacuated. over the weekend, maine state troopers arrest aid man who admitted bringing a loaded gun to a movie theater saturday night. in california, sunday, this man was arrested for allegedly creating a disturbance in a dark knight screening. witnesses say he started shouting about colorado and threat tuned get a gun. >> the theater is kind of what we call a comfort place. people go there. you expect there to be fun. >> reporter: the police psychologist in aurora says it makes perfect sense that many people now see movie theaters as potentially dangerous places. >> psychological foot in front goes on and on after these events. the wounds will heal, how do you feel you will get past it? >> i don't know there is a getting past it. except in time i will probably

start going back to the movies again. for now the only thing i am going to do is be hesitant about going to the movies. >> reporter: again, understa understandable that they should feel that way. just as anxiety that has nothing to do with travel invaded safety in the skies, it may well be for a portion of the population, the escape closer to home is now tainted too. >> i am hoping that in the long term it doesn't change things at all. because cinema-going is a place where people go to get away from it all. just let go of all your problems for two hours. and indulge in, you know, someone else's problems. >> reporter: clearly a lot of people are still going. >> thank you. >> reporter: among them, 16-year-old justin davis who survived the aurora massacre. >> i just want to finish it. and, men, women, children, that didn't get to finish it. i want to finish it for them. >> reporter: for him, watching "the dark knight" all the way through was a way of reclaiming life. i'm david wright for

after he won gold for cuba at the '92 olympics, the boxer was given a bicycle by fidel castro which he then traded for a pig so he could feed his family. that is one story to help explain why so many cuban fighters have defected over the years. how did they get so good to begin with? the little island nation has a heavyweight reputation with the london games about to begin. abc's christian amapour ventured

to cuba. >> reporter: he may be small, but his dreams are big. what do you want to be when you get big? champion? olympic champion? albert is one of hundreds of young cubans who begin olympic training at an age when most american children have pairly started little league. perhaps that's how cuba has come to dominate the world of olympic gold medal boxing. ♪ this island nation, just 90 miles from the coast of florida, has been ruled for more than 50 years by fidel castro. and the u.s. has been squeezing it with an economic embargo for almost as long, trying to bring fidel down along with his communist regime. cubans are isolated and poor, but inside the ring, they're rich. they're champions who have won 63 olympic boxing medals, 32 of

them gold. and here is where those olympians are made. cuba's national boxing academy on the outskirts of havana. it doesn't look like much, but because of its reputation, it is considered a top training facility. and boxers here have come from all over the world to learn from the best like coach michael romero who won a gold medal in atlanta at the summer games in 1996. how does cuba treat its champions when you come back after winning a gold medal at the olympics, what do they do for you here? >> translator: there is a festival he says, and the government gives you a house, a car, and a stipend for life. a good life, but not the glamorous life of big money boxing. after the 1959 revolution, castro banned professional sports. declaring that athletes should serve the glory of the nation.

cuba's most famous boxer stevenson, seen here winning one of his three olympic gold medals. a national hero who died just last month. he is remembered as one of the greatest amateurs in the sport's history. >> he has the pains of hunger for affluence. >> reporter: legendary boxing promoter don king offered him millions to fight muhammad ali, stevenson turned him down saying what is $1 million against # million cuban whose love me. it may be hard to fathom, the same spirit is shared by these young cubans we met working out in the hot havana sun making due with the equipment that they have. we found this young olympic hopeful pounding a punching bag held together with duct tape. what do you make of these training facilities? they're trying to improve them. i can see some of the bags with holes in them. >> reporter: they can't be bad,

he says, if they trained all those olympic champions here. >> reporter: do you think it will change your life here in cuba if you go to the olympics if you become an olympic gold medalist. under the watchful eye of his minders, he tells us it will support the glory of my country. that gold medal glory is also the hope of little albert, who trains two hours a day with his father, who is also a boxer. how long before he becomes an olympic champion? >> how long before? >> yeah, how many years? >> how many years? >> yeah. which olympics are you thinking about? >> '20. >> 2020? >> i think. >> reporter: albert's olympic turn may be a few years away but he has already got the heart of a heavyweight. for "nightline," i'm any crist y cristi cristiana an
