this morning, sandy has arrived. >> rain and wind from the superstorm lashing florida right now. the carolinas are next, as millions in the northeast brace for a direct hit. we have the latest storm track. 11 days to go. the candidates making simultaneous stops in all-important ohio. but fresh controversy about what the president said about mitt romney. and the first lady making a stop on late night. family horror. parents in a posh new york neighborhood facing the unthinkable. their children killed. police say the nanny did it. and unfamiliar territory. giants with the edge as the world series now shifts to the motor city.

good friday morning, everyone. we begin with the storm watch and a growing death toll from that powerful hurricane. >> at least 21 people have died. most of the victims were in cuba, including a 4-month-old baby, who was crushed when his house collapsed. >> right now, sandy is pounding the bahamas with heavy wind and rain. the east coast of florida is already feeling the effects, as ross palumbo of our miami station shows us. >> reporter: crashing waves, whipping wind and near-whiteout conditions. all of it washing over ft. lauderdale beach. flooding some tourists with fear. >> this is crazy. this is nuts. there's sand in the street right now. >> reporter: with severe surf conditions, not only at sea, but along the sidewalks. and along its edge, rescuers were racing to push people back to shore.

>> very, very dangerous. we don't want anybody to get hurt. >> reporter: despite double red flag warnings, just to the forth, near this pier, surfers were slipping into the water. >> the rip current's too strong. it whipped me all the way down there. >> reporter: those currents not only closing the pier, but causing a wave of concern in the ft. lauderdale international boat show. more than 1,000 yachts are tied down. and tonight, sailors and sailsmen aren't sure how well they'll hold. now, there's nothing left to do but watch sandy's calling cards pile up. >> our extreme weather team has been working through the night to determine the exact path that sandy will take. >> jim dickey has a look at where this dangerous storm could go. >> next 24 to 48 hours, what you can expect. sandy will eventually make a turn more to the north and northeast after it gets away from the upper-level low pressure system over western cuba right now. then, hugs the coast of the carolinas. through the weekend, soaking

rainfall, especially eastern north carolina. the outer banks looking for flooding rainfall from sandy. it moves its way north and eastward. we're tracking a system, a strong cold front, a push of cold air moving its way eastward. that will eventually draw sandy back inland. exactly where that's going to occur, not yet set in stone. but we're keying in the area from the mid coast of maine, bangor, down to the delmarva peninsula. that's where the highest probability would be. but looking for a wide-reaching impact from this storm, soaking, flooding rainfall. coastal flooding and snowfall in the higher elevations. rob and paula, back to you. >> thanks, jim. a messy few days ahead. of course, the "gma" team is tracking sandy with a team of reporters up and down the east coast. all of that coming up at 7:00. and as the race for the white house, with the two candidates zeroing in on one state. o-h. >> i-o.

the battle for the buckeye state is shaping up to be the big fight with 11 days to go. getting close. abc's tahman bradley on why there is so much at stake. >> reporter: the race for the white house is at a furious pace for one key swing state. ohio. whoever wins the buckeye state will almost certainly win the white house. challenger mitt romney leads nationally, according to the latest abc news/"washington post" tracking poll. 57%-47%. but president obama maintains a slim advantage in ohio. the latest poll has him up by five. the president campaigning there last night, used a targeted message. >> if mitt romney had been present when the auto industry was on the verge of collapse, we might not have an american auto industry today. the auto industry supports one in eight ohio jobs. >> reporter: romney leading in polls on trust to handle the economy, is fighting back. >> my priority is jobs, jobs,

jobs. we're going to get them here in ohio. >> reporter: both campaigns are trying to lock down supporters and get them to the polls now in ohio and other states with early voting. yesterday, the president stopped in chicago to cast his vote. an appearance on "jimmy kimmel live," first lady michelle obama joked about the obama camp's turnout efforts. >> all right. >> time to vote. >> okay. >> get out there. >> reporter: as the campaign winds down, the race has taken a nasty turn. president obama in an interview with "rolling stone" magazine, joking about children in the election said, kids have good instincts. they look at the other guy and say, that's a b.s.er, i can tell. former bush administration secretary of state, colin powell, endorsed president obama because he's black. paula and rob? >> thanks, tahman. overseas to syria, where months of violence have come to a temporary stop.

the army has agreed to a four-day cease-fire for a muslim holiday. there's major loopholes in this agreement. the government says it will respond to rebel attacks and foreign fighters who might enter the country. encouraging news this morning about the young pakistani girl shot and wounded by a taliban gunman. doctors say she is speaking and shows no signs of brain damage. great news. her parents are with her as she continues recovering at a british hospital. she is doing so well, she asked them to bring her textbooks from home. >> shows the priority she puts on her education. fire crews in southern california are braced for another day of hot, dry santa ana winds. fire engines, bulldozers, fire crews and aircraft are being placed in strategic locations. a wind-driven brush fire was quickly extinguished but not before a nearby preschool was evacuated as a precaution. wheeling out the little cribs there. >> to safety. >> yes.

welcome back, on this friday morning. a little of the shine might be coming off apple. partly because expectations are so incredibly high. apple's profits were up 24% in the most recent quarter, when the red-hot iphone 5 went on sale. but that fell short of forecasts. after the bell, apple said its latest gadgets could be a drag on profits going forward because they are so expensive to make. and speaking of expensive, the presidential candidates and their parties have hit $2 billion in donations. the most recent financial figures just filed by both campaigns show president obama and the democrats just over $1

billion. and mitt romney and the republicans, just shy of $1 billion. but still counting. >> a lot of money. the latest weekly jobless numbers are in, showing a dip in unemployment applications after a couple of volatile weeks. new filings fell 23,000 to 369,000. the last monthly jobs report, before the election, is due out a week from today. and in one sign of economic recovery and job optimism, more young adults are on the move. a census snapshot says after stuck in their parents' homes. the rate of people ages a 25 to 29, making out-of-state moves, made the biggest jump in 13 years as they ventured out on their own. i just moved out of my parents' home. kidding. here's the latest proof that celebrities can keep cashing in on their fame, dead or alive. elizabeth taylor tops the new

west side apartment, allegedly from their own nanny. >> the mother enters the bathroom and finds her 6-year-old daughter and her 2-year-old son stabbed to death in the tub. >> reporter: the little boy and girl were killed. and the nypd says their mother also found the nanny, unconscious nearby, with the knife still in her hand. >> on the floor of the bathroom is a nanny, who apparently had inflicted wounds in her, on her throat. >> reporter: the nanny who police have not identified survived. investigators say she's in critical but stable condition at the hospital, where she's also now under arrest. the family's 3-year-old daughter was not hurt because she happened to be with her mother, away from the apartment, when this horrific crime occurred. police say they've notified the father, who was also away at the time. the big question that still remains is why anyone would do this? >> the investigation is just starting now. i can't answer those questions.

>> reporter: brandi hitt, abc news. >> neighbors say the family always seemed so happy and so close. the mother had a blog and taught art classes to children. more names are being released today in connection with that prostitution ring police say was run out of a zumba studio. 21 names of suspected clients were released about two weeks ago. and now residents of the small maine town are braced to see what other name turn up on that list. the head of the zumba studio and her partner are pled not guilty. changes are under way at seven u.s. airport that will make screening less evasive. the tsa is removing the full-body screeners. in their place, machines that produce less-graphic cartoon-style body outlines. those detroit tigers, hoping for a change of fortune as they bring in the world series back home.
