at this hour hurricane sandy continues to move up the east coast bringing high winds and heavy rains. we want to get an update on where we stand tonight. >> we're tracking the storm and bob ryan will be with us in just a moment. look at the satellite showing the storm moving off to the north and northeast and it's expected to make a quick turn to the west as we move through the evening hours tomorrow into tomorrow night and early tuesday morning making land fall. this is the projected time line for you. showing by monday 8:00 at night into tuesday not a tremendous amount of movement and that is why we expect so much rain

across our area, upwards of five to ten inches not out of the question. already have a flood watch in effect for the district and surrounding counties. notice frederick county a flood warning has been issued and it is expected to arrive during the day tomorrow. also have a high wind warning for the entire area wind gusts upwards of 60 miles per hour. and on top of all the rain gary county a blizzard warning where they could see tix to 12 inches of heavy snow by the time this system moves of here. much more on the track and what to expect the coming week in a few minutes. >> a lot of you have been hitting up our social med yay sites squg why this storm isn't heading out to sea. >> instead of going out the really

unique. >> it is. and it's one of those events that happen once in a lifetime and folks say what do i do, what does it mean and why hasn't it happened before? usually we get these out ot sea and because it is a combination of a hurricane and interacting with a huge wave from the west is going to be drawing it back toward the west. and from every indication one positive news is it will not be hitting us directly. we're seing the effects. rather it will be moving into the new jersey coastline by late tomorrow. i want to give you another picture. here is a big wide view of the hem sper i can view and image you're 22,000 miles in space and you can see the extent of the cloudness extends into canada. look at that. this is the latest picture. there you can see the eye again

so how it's continuing to develop. there is the eye of the hurricane 300 miles out to sea. >> so why aren't we under a hurricane warning or watch or new york for that matter? >> they should be. and it's because of a little bit of the way that the definition of a hurricane is determined by the national weather service. it should be a hurricane warning up the coast. it is now a hurricane wind watch. but once it becomes a more winter like storm then that responsibility gets transferred to the local offices. but unfortunately the communication is an important issue that will be debated in the years ahead. but it should be a hurricane watch or warning. it is a hurricane and will be doing damage along new jersey, long island t coast of new

england it will be historic. and it will be late tomorrow and into tuesday. it's still not raining in new york city. >> how does this storm rival any other storms you can remember? >> the only one i can remember is the blizzard of 78. it was like that anded the an eye but that was a winter situation that came up. by the time i got home after three or four days, four feet snow. this one because it's autumn, five to ten inches of rain in many areas. so what we have to deal with is the rain then the wind. once the soil gets saturated that's the increasing danger of power outages and trees coming down. one posssive is leaves are down but the roads are going to be slippery in the morning with the leaves down. >> a viewer on twitter wants to

know what time the winds will hit in arlington area? >> the winds will be tomorrow from the north and northwest. so i've been suggestings if you know which way the snorth, that would be the way the winds will be coming and branches and things are the thing to watch out for. sometimes we have winds coming from the south and trees come down south to the north. look on the north side those are where the danger is but tomorrow evening after four or five inches of rain and the increasing wind. then tuesday we get a southerly wind and we get risk for a surge going up the bay in baltimore. >> that's where we can see the flooding. >> yes. >> the question on facebook today was about driving tomorrow. a lot of people asking am i going to be able to drive.

le despite cloudy skies and the threat from hurricane sandy that did not stop thousands of runners from taking part in this year's marine corps marathon. they ran for 26 miles of course. mayo was the men's winner. he ran the course in two hours and thirty minutes and it was his first marathon. >> the wind was really bad, 20 miles per thour. >> he just wanted to beat sandy. >> the other winner finished 14 minutes later. organizers say they had no major problems. the marine corps marathon is the 4th largest in the world. we return with an update on

i was just looking at the radar and there is a powerful ban that is making its way in right now. >> this is just the beginning. the rain is going to intense fy over night and the wind will kick in. you were out a couple of hours ago and you can tell something is brewing out there. tomorrow morning you will definitely feel it. looking outside right now it's cloudy a little bit of rain. the wind at this hour just 15 miles per hour and 55 degrees. look at the wind gust out there 52 wind gust and 59 in norfolk. we are going to look for these winds to continue to increase as we move through the over night.

the circulation of the storm it is a monster of a storm covering a lot of real estate. it is going to expand continuing it's north north easterly track and it's going to make land fall around southern new jersey by early tuesday morning. and we could see wind gusts across our area at around 60 miles per hour and some areas closer to the bay higher than that. show you our future cast as we move through the next 48 hours. can you believe there is a blizzard warning for extreme western maryland. they could see 12 inches of snow. 8:00 tuesday dealing with the rain across our area and we may see upwards of five to ten inches by the time this lifts to the rt north and off to the east. winds with the system are at 75 miles per hour.

wind gusts at about 92 miles per hour. this is our local model showing the potential rainfall by 1:00 tomorrow afternoon already two inches of rain. on top of this we have the gusty wind and then by 11:00 tomorrow night about five inches of rain up toward the eastern shore, 11 inches not out of the question from this system. so definitely a lot of flooding will occur through the next 48 hours. and the biggest corne is not tomorrow for flooding but on tuesday when wins change direction. more out of the south and southwest that is going to allow that water to move our way. flood prone areas could see flooding tuesday and wednesday. >> tomorrow daytime highs around 50 to 55 t. big story will be the wind and heavy rain. extended outlook will show our

certainly intensifying here in ocean city. i have a hand held wind gauge and i've been keeping track of the gusts since about 5:00 this afternoon. most of the afternoon winds were blowing about 20 miles an hour with gusts up to 40. now we're seeing gusts up to 50 miles an hour. stringing rain coming in driven by this wind. but the most dramatic site -- i'm going to put my hood up because it hurts. this surf is all the way up the beach laughing at the sea wall in town sending a splash up and over. that is unusual even in these storms for the water to get that high. and we're early on in this storm. i want to show you some video we took around town earlier this evening. showing some of the flooding,

the street flooding that we are seeing coming up from the back bays here. that's one of the things they were worried about and it is happening. not to the point we're going to see damage. these are places that are used to flooding but it is coming up and over the island. streets are closed. take a look at the inlet, we took pictures of waves crashing over that jetty in ocean city. impressive waves 10 to 20 feet tall. of course we can't measure them. but sandy is making its presence known here in ocean city. driving rains, heavy wind, there is going to be a lot of beach erosion. in ocean city brad bell.
