50 years later. today, we remember john f. kennedy, in a death that still captivates the country half a century later. held captive. a trio of women finally free after being enslaved for decades. how they were rescued and the couple under arrest. this morning, the celebrity who managed to slip into one couple's magical moment. and good friday morning to you. i'm tai hernandez, in for diana. we're going to begin this morning with the wild weather in all forms across the country. >> harsh conditions, include frigid temperatures, rain, pounding wind and rain. plenty of snow, as well. this is the scene in southern california, where intense rainfall caused flash flooding for miles in san diego. the intense downpours flooded out roads quickly, submerging cars under water.

also in utah, vicious wind, leaving thousands of customers in the dark. the transportation department shut down major roadways, including interstate 15. high wind warnings will be in effect until noon today in salt lake city. >> and in denver, the shovels and plows are out for the season's first snowstorm. more than six inches fell in some spots, quickly turning to ice after it hit the ground. drivers had a rough time navigating the roads. and many flights in and out of the airport were delayed or canceled. the arctic blast will intensity and expand to much of the nation's midsection today. expect frigid conditions from north texas to oklahoma, north into minnesota. rainy along the east coast. and it will be freezing along the northern border. now, to the solemn remembrances around the nation today as america marks 50 years since president kennedy was

killed. >> and for the first time ever, the assassination being remembered in dealey plaza, where the president was shot. abc's brandi hitt is there. >> reporter: john f. kennedy was more than president of the united states. >> what you must be concerned about, always, of course, is the future. >> reporter: that all changed on november 22nd, 1963. >> mrs. kennedy now gets into the car. and the president does. >> reporter: when thousands gathered in dallas to watch the president and first lady's motorcade. >> there's the president and mrs. kennedy, just minutes before he was shot. >> reporter: the president was shot twice, with his wife, jackie, next to him. >> she did scream. she said, he's been hit. >> the president was hit in the head. >> the president fellover, facedown. >> reporter: and dr. ronald jones rushed to parkland hospital. >> there was no sign of life. in my opinion, he had a fixed stare. his eyes were open. >> reporter: as word spread of kennedy's assassination, shock

and sadness paralyzed the nation. >> the whole country was mesmerized and horrified by it. >> reporter: vice president lyndon b. johnson was quickly sworn into office, as the focus turned to the accused assassin, lee harvey oswald. and oswald's murder on live television, left behind even more questions. >> a lone gunman's just crazy. and that's so unsatisfying. people like to go after conspiracy theories because they seem so much more rational. >> reporter: 50 years later, the country gathers again to remember kennedy. and a moment that seemed to stand dill at dealey plaza. a moment of silence will happen at 12:30 central time. the moment president kennedy was shot. brandi hitt, abc news, dallas. >> stay with abc news for today's events. we'll carry the moment of commemoration at 1:25 p.m. eastern. senate democrats are shaking

a century-old tradition, virtually eliminating the filibuster. they're shaking it up, that is. that means the minority party will not be able to block nominees for judicious and agency posts, unless they have a majority vote. republicans are outraged. but democratic leaders say the move is necessary to overcome gridlock. >> it's time to change the senate before this institution becomes obsolete. >> most important and dangerous restructuring of senate rules since thomas jefferson wrote them. >> the vision of the filibuster will not apply to supreme court nominees. trey radel has checked himself into rehab. he entered the clinic in florida, saying he's been struggling with alcohol and substance abuse for years. he was arrested in a d.c. sting. powers, including the u.s., are struggling to reach a deal with iran over its nuclear program. one of the sticking points is the demand that iran halt its nuclear program for six months. the more comprehensive agreement

is worked out. the senate is promising more ascensions in december if the deal is not reached. in europe, a scary scene, as a grocery store ceiling collapses on to shoppers. 25 people have died in this collapse in latvia. three of them were firefighters when a second portion of the roof fell down. it appears to be caused by workers building a winter garden on the roof. a jumbo jet has made its way to the right airport. pilots mistakenly landed at an airplane in wichita, kansas, instead of mcdonnell air force base. there were fears that the plane couldn't take off again. the plane barely cleared the smaller runway but made it. also making news on this busy travel friday, a change. >> plan to allow in-flight cell phone calls with passengers

waiting no time to weigh in. it's a ban that's been in place for 22 years. no cell phone calls until you touch down. next month, the fcc will meet to discuss changing its policy. allowing phone calls and access to mobile wireless services once the plane passes 10,000 feet. >> i think the pros are that you could be more in touch in the air. they used to have the old phones built into the back of the seat. i think the cons is that people will be on the phone. and it would be loud and disruptive to the flight. >> reporter: that's exactly why the major flight attendants' union is against it. laud talkers that could drown out announcements. voice calls are allowed in asia and europe. but nestic travelers seem to be against the idea. flooding social media with comments like this. absolutely worst idea. and absolutely no way. never. if the rule is changed, each airline would decide whether to allow voice calls. jetblue and united say their customers are largely against the move. delta flatout says it would not allow voice calls.

welcome back. for the first time in its history, the dow opens above 16,000 today. took just 198 trading sessions to go, from 15,000 to 16,000. analysts say round number milestones attract smaller investors to the market. they're signs the market rally could continue. the government says it will sell off its shares in general motors by the end of the year. the treasury got those shares for bailing out gm in 2009. selling them could result in a loss for taxpayers of about $10 billion. microsoft's x-box one is on sale. and people lined up to be the first to buy the gaming console overnight. it allows users to watch tv and movies. in addition to playing games. it costs $500. samsung is expected to appeal a new verdict in its

a truck driver got stuck when a sudden mudslide trapped him in nearly three feet of muck. and the nasty weather will be making a mess of the morning commute. plan on running into slippery, wet roads north of texas to new york. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in phoenix, los angeles, dallas, memphis and houston. police in britain are investigating a shocking discovery. >> three women held captive in a home in south london for 30 years. a 69-year-old from malaysia. a 57-year-old from ireland. and a 30-year-old britton who is believed to be born in captivity. it's similar to that of ariel castro who kept three women captive in his house for ten years in cleveland, right under neighbors' noses. >> they had rooms they could use. but they were very restricted on everything they could do. >> this morning all three of the women are in a safe place and said to be doing well.

two people, a man and a woman, both 67 years old, are now in custody. kennedy cousin michael skakel spending his first night out of jail in more than a decade. he is on bail in connecticut, while prosecutors appeal a ling that granted him a new trial. he wants to spend time with family, including his son. if they lose appeal, they will put skakel on trial again. a heartbreaking story from suburban minneapolis. two children are dead and three others in the hospital, after a mother's car veered off the roadway and into a pond. the car was under water for 20 minutes before rescuers were able to reach the children. jeffrey roberts called 911 and then ran to the scene. >> i'm waiting to see, are they getting the little ones out. first, it was three. now, there's four. and now, they're saying five. oh, my gosh. >> the driver, a mother of three children, was able to escape the sinking car. the cause of the accident has not been determined. a community in south florida mourning the loss of two, young women killed in a head-on

collision this past weekend. but anger is building against the woman who caused the crash. just before that crash, 20-year-old kayla mendoza tweeted, too drunk to care. four days earlier, she tweeted too high to care. no charges have been filed yet because police are awaiting toxicology report results. we're hearing 911 calls made during the school bus hijacking in arkansas. a man commandeered the bus. he led police on a nearly 12-mile chase, running several red lights along the way. the 911 calls came in as the chase began. >> he got on the school bus with a knife and the bus driver. and is driving down north martin street. i mean, down martin street. >> is it a school bus? >> yes. >> okay. are you there at the old rec center? >> yes. i'm so scared. >> it's okay. just calm down. >> no one was hurt.

22-year-old man named nicholas miller was arrested after he pulled the bus over. he faces 16 felony charges. one of hollywood's biggest leading men is sharing a secret with the world this morning. >> oscar host, "les mis" star and "people" magazine's former sexiest man alive, hugh jackman says he is recovering from skin cancer. he sent out a selfie. doctors found a basal cell carcinoma on his nose. >> he checked with the doctor because his wife insisted he go. one nba star has been handed an expensive lesson. dwight howard of the houston rockets. >> the league slapped howard a $25,000 fine for flipping a ball to a heckler in dallas. he's making 21 million bucks this year, so he can certainly afford it. the team lost the game. $25,000 will get your attention. time, now, for sports. drew brees and the saints get another big win on thursday night football. >> here's all the highlights from espn.
