making news in america this morning -- bad timing. extreme weather, making its way across the country during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. what does it mean for all of the last-minute packages that you're waiting for? show-stopper. a ceiling collapsed inside a crowded theater. dozens were hurt. people inside were talking about the moment everything came crashing down. feathers ruffled.

the family makes a threat that no fan of the show wants to hear. tag-team heroes. two teachers jump into action and rescue a bus full of students. this morning, new video of their heroic actions. good friday morning. we begin with severe weather threatening to disrupt a lot of holiday plans. >> slick roads are already being blamed for two serious bus crashes in california. it's a deadly start to a busy weekend of traveling and holiday preparations. abc's devin dwyer has more. >> reporter: a deadly start to the holiday travel weekend. two tour buses loaded with passengers overturned on the same rain-slicked california highway. >> passengers onboard had to break out of those emergency exits on the roof to get out and through the front wind screen. >> reporter: this crush left 30

people injured. and almost at the same time, 50 miles away, audio bus skidded out of control and rolled over. >> 60 serious and 13 delayed or minor injuries. >> reporter: both accidents are under investigation. but authorities say wet, winter weather was likely a factor. new storm fronts are sweeping across the country just in time for christmas. they'll bring snow and ice into the pacific northwest. then push east, making a cold, messy weekend in the middle of the country. >> waiting for a very long time. i'm happy that it's here. >> it is snowing. and it is beautiful. >> reporter: good news for snow lovers. but bad news for travelers and those last-minute deliveries. the storm socked in the salt lake city airport. in wyoming, blizzard conditions on the roads. shippers u.p.s. and fedex have been preparing for the storm since last week. rerouting thousands of packages and adding deicers for planes. >> we have all 330,000 team members out delivering and

picking up packages this week. >> reporter: an army of santa's helpers to make sure millions of gifts arrive on time. if you're hoping for a white christmas, your best bet is in the midwest. from st. louis to chicago, to detroit. in the northeast, warm air this weekend means much of the snow here won't last. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. your gifts may arrive on time. but you may not. the forecast for this last weekend before christmas isn't good for much of the country. >> jim dickey, keeping an eye on it for us. jim? >> good morning, john and diana. dealing with a mess here across much of the northeast into the midwest. today, frontal boundary strung out. cold air to the north, warmth being drawn from the south. many spots, in the 40s and 50s ahead of this system. an area of ice between. that stretches back across the lakes. this really gets going into the weekend. looking for disruptive snow from the lakes, back on into the plains, with severe weather in the deep south. john and diana, back to you? >> thank you. our other big story, still unfolding in london, where a

performance at one of the city's famous theaters ended in chaos last night. >> part of the ceiling came crashing down on the audience. plaster, dust and printered wood all over the seats. and part of the balcony, gone. marci gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: an intense rescue effort in london's west end. >> the ceiling had falling into the auditorium. >> reporter: part of the ceiling collapsing during a play, crumbling on to some of the more than 700 people seated in the audience below. >> and we heard a creek. and then, the ceiling was just slowly -- and the whole thing collapsed. just suddenly like that. and you couldn't see anything. >> this massive crash. and massive section of it came down. the room filled with dust straight away. >> reporter: dozens of people hurt. some seriously. >> a large number of casualties. many of them are walking wounded who have been rescued by

firefighters, paramedics and police officers. and are being treated in hospitals in the area. >> reporter: several reportedly trapped in the rubble of the more than 100-year-old apollo theater and quickly rescued. >> police arrived and the ambulance. and fire crews, within five minutes, everybody was there. >> reporter: eyewitnesses and first responders describing the scene as chaotic. a triage center in a neighboring theater, as ambulances began rushing the most seriously wounded to nearby hospitals. investigators still trying to determine what caused this terrifying collapse. looking into whether lightning may have struck the building. john and diana? >> marci, thank you. we should learn more today about an overnight crash at tampa international airport. emergency crews raced to the scene. it's believed the plane almost hit the roof of a nearby gas station before crashing. air traffic control recordings describe the scene. >> it's hard to tell from this point. it looks like the air force

landed short of runway 19, right in the grass. >> there is a fire. aircraft is on the ground. there is a fire. he is short of the runway. >> the recordings also indicate the pilot survived the crash. the crash is under investigation. if you're one of the millions of americans who health insurance policies have been canceled, you're getting some help. the administration says you can buy a bare-bones plan and won't be subject to penalties if you don't have any coverage next year. the latest tweak to the affordable care act was announced last night, just four days before the deadline. and the senate approved a comprehensive defense bill last night, sending it to the president for his signature. the bill authorizes $663 billion for national defense spending and will keep the guantanamo bay prison open. but it enacts historic reforms how the military handles sexual assault. but it does not take those cases out of the chain of command. a new report explains why the air force general in charge of u.s. nuclear missiles was fired.

investigators say major general michael carey acted badly during an official trip to russia in july. among the infractions, heavy drinking, rudeness and associating with so-called suspect women. when questioned, carey reportedly couldn't remember portions of what happened there. and in another case of misbehaving, trey radel is out of rehab and will stay in office. he pleaded guilty last month to possession of cocaine and was ordered to get treatment. he says he has no plans to step down. but on monday, the house ethics committee says it plans to look into whether radel violated rules of conduct. new mexico, now the 17th state where same-sex marriages are legal. the state supreme court says the right to marry is protected by the state constitution. more than 1,400 same-sex marriages were wmperformed in t last two months while the court considered the decision. dennis rodman had had a busy friday in north korea.
