jacqui for your check on the weather. >> quieting things down a little bit today. the storm system has exited the region and now is affecting new england as you can see on our storm scan here. places like new york city, hartford, connecticut, up towards boston and maine. this is the important factor for today. i don't want you to be fooled by some of the temperatures above the freezing mark. there is still snow on the ground and still icy spots despite that. 32 in gatersburg. 33 at dulles and 38 at reagan national. we'll have sunshine to start our day. it is good news. a little bit of snow melting. a possible increase this afternoon and a chance of snow overnight tonight and into the morning hours on this saturday, but then we'll have a calm and cool end of our weekend.

i'll have more details in another couple of minutes. right now let's head on over to traffic with amanda. >> thank you very much. so far so good on the major interstates. however we saw dicy and icy conditions on the offramps, bridges and overpasses. of course we did dip below freezing last night. anything you saw that was water yesterday is going to be ice this morning. we have got very slick spot on the secondaries. a lot of those didn't get cleared and we just have a couple of spin-outs and disabled vehicles throughout the area. one of those going to be on the outer loop coming near route 5 and that blocks the left lane. other than that, though, looks pretty good on all major roadways. no vehicle restrictions are in place. >> problems this morning in a montgomery county neighborhood. >> john gonzales is live with

the latest on what is going on there. john? >> good morning, ladies. you know when it has to do with road conditions montgomery county, throughout the d.c. area, it really and truly is a mixed bag. yore going find wet pavement this morning, which is a good thing but then you have neighborhoods like this one in potomac, maryland. this one hasn't been touched with a plow in the past 24 hours. we have already talked to some neighbors who tell us that is usual think case when they get snow, for some reason, they never get plowed. take a look. some of this road here doesn't even have tire tracks on it now. that is what i'm talking about. just across the street, you have a road that has been plowed. this has been plowed but it is extremely icy this morning. when i talk about a mixed bag, that is what you're going to find this morning throughout the area. be very careful. last night's snow of course did

not help. here in maryland, more than 2700 plow trucks were busy all day long trying stay on top of the first storm. well, they did a very good job with the main thoroughfares starting to hit the secondry roads when we got hit with yet more snow last night. in virginia, more of the same. we had numerous accidents. state police saying more than 2,000 accidents reported on roadways in virginia. thousands of plow trucks were working hard there all day long. this morning, the plow trucks have changed the process a little bit from plowing now to salting. i was on i-370 earlier and noticed a lot of salting going on right now as they try de-ice some of the road ways now that most of the snow has been pushed out. as for this neighborhood here, outpost drive, neighborhoods say they have complained for years about not getting any cleanup.

they have gone to the county executive and said once again today, they will start making some more phone calls. >> ok, john. thank you. d.c. police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the snow. he was discovered on a sidewalk in southeast. the mayor said the man was a patient at st. elizabeth's psychiatric hospital. there is still no word on his identity. play. do not suspect foul metrobuses will start running in about an hour. it was suspended last night. the buses will only stop on major road ways. keep that in mind. trains are expected to run on a normal schedule this morning. the snow has stopped but boy, did it leave a mess outside. up next, a sloppy morning commute and the potential warm-up. 4:05.

>> welcome back. 4:05 on your friday morning. time to check on the forecast. >> valentine's day by the way. happy valentine's day. this weather doesn't have us in a very sweet mood. >> stay inside. light a fire. have a romantic dinner. all snowed in. what could be more romantic? we have a chilly day to look forward to and a nice day to clean out, actually. you should be able to get the drive ways shoveled and the road crew will have plenty of time to clear things out. awfully warm for this time of morning, especially with snow on the ground. our wind-chill factor at 31 with winds north-northwesterly. 41 degrees in culpeper. 32 in fredericksburg. what can we expect for the

forecast for today? clear skies and 35 degrees at 9:00. plenty of sunshine to start our day, but the clouds will increase throughout the afternoon and we do have another chance of getting snow overnight tonight and into your saturday. we'll have more details on that coming up with your seven-day orecast. how is cleanup and how are things where you are? >> ok. well, when i was driving here, jacqui, the main roads are fine. but this is going to be a street right behind union station in northwest d.c.. if you daycare a look at these sidewalk here, they have been shovels and cleaned up. you can really see this coat of ice and everything is just so slick. i have to say i have had so much trouble this morning staying up upright because of this almost

ice rink that has pretty much encased this entire area. you'll see the snow. i had to actually -- i mean, it is all so hard. look at this. yeah, it is really hard. then i have my storm chaser here. nobody cleaned it up yesterday. i was out this morning trying to get it off. one of things is on these side streets here, since the plows have been going up, they have been pushing up all of that snow. the cars are going to have a difficult time, especially downtown on these side streets trying to shovel and make their way out of their parking spots. this morning, just take caution. it is going to be slick and icy. i have to say i took a fall yesterday and even my car got stuck. i hate to have to admit that. i have been telling everyone not the drive and i did. thank you to two gentlemen in arlington who helped me out. nonetheless, so just walk with

caution again. this is what you're going to note across much of the area on these side streets. for now, we want to know what the roadways are looking like for those that have to get back to work. amanda has a look at the traffic. >> side walks were covered yesterday. i saw people walking directly in the roads. watch out for pedestrians. they are going through a rough spot as well. we're going to start off with a live shot in arlington. you can see you have got most of the main lanes cleared. however, in certain areas, especially on the secondry, it may be down to one lane where most of the people or drivers have been traveling. so keep that in mind. brings, overpasses and offramps are still an issue this morning. we interest wires down in laurel, maryland. that is going to be along aviation avenue.

>> welcome back. a landmark decision to tell you about. this these do with same-sex marriages. >> this is exactly right. virginia is now the first southern state to have a ban on same-sex marriage overturned. now the u.s. district court judge in virginia ruled thursday that the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. the virginia decision comes on the heels of a ruling in kentucky on wednesday. that decision required kentucky to recognize same-sex marriages

performed in other states. but the kentucky judge did not rule that same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. as well, the virginia decision does not mean that same sex couples with now immediately marry. the judge issued a stay on her order until this case was resolved. legal scholars say that likely means the court will have to decide this case or one very similar to it. >> 4:16. in the day ahead, former prince jornl's county deputy sheriff lamar mcintire will be sentenced. the state will ask for no more than 18 months in prison. >> consumed by sorrow in the first anniversary of the day he shot and killed his girlfriend. he faces a murder trial next

month. rosecutors say he killed reeva steenkamp at her home. he says he will carry the loss of her and the trauma of his shootings the rest of his life. this winter storm that just won't quit is still plaguing the east this morning. >> it absolutely is. there are thousands of people this morning with power outages. >> mother nature's valentine's gift. rain, ice, sleet and thunder snow. a final punch from a massive winter storm that socked 100 million americans. >> it has been horrible. >> don't you love it? holy cow. what can i say? >> from georgia to maine, dangerous white-out conditions. cars stuck. some abandoned. even emergency vehicles can't get through the icy mess.

in brooklyn, new york, a pregnant woman was struck and killed by a snowplow. her baby delivered my emergency c-section. a firefighter helped this elderly woman get through the snow. new york city has been battered this winter. seven days of an inch avenue know or more. altogether, 40 inches of snow so far this year. >> sick of the cold really. yeah, i'm ready for spring. >> widespread power outages. for many, it is going to be another hard day of digging out. >> heavy snow. yeah. we take lots of breaks. >> at the nation's airports crews have been working around he clock to clear runways. hundreds of flights were canceled. >> now that it has finally stopped snowing, they are trying

snowfall reports. thank you. we really appreciate it. the biggest numbers i could find. take that with a grain of salt. look at some of these numbers. these are two-feet totals in spots. 24.8 in westminster. damascus, 20.6. >> keep in mind that these totals include the extra accumulation we got the second time around. here is the storm system now. there you can see that it is moving across new england and they are still getting the heavy snow at this time. travel is going to be very difficult. if you're trying to travel in any of those spots, travel is going to continue to be a problem. a wind-chill factor of 31.

it is tough to get too much above 40 degrees when we have such a big snow pack. it is 32 in gaithersburg. the temperature in culpeper is 41. when you add in those brisk 30's. it feels like the little clipper system is going to be approaching. sunshine this morning and then the clouds will increase as we head into the afternoon hours. as we head into the overnight hours, we could see little light rain or snow. depending on whether or not it stays all know or if we have that little bit of a mix. i'm leaning more towards snow than anything else. we have the potential to pick up a little dusting that goes through the morning on saturday but done by the noon hour. the rest of the weekend should be very nice and calm.

morning sunshine. increasing cloudiness this afternoon. high temperatures between 38-44. for tonight, we should see snow aybe mixing with rain. we're going to stay on the chilly side as we head into sunday. monday, presidents' day. i know some kids are out of school but my kids originally had that day off and now they have to make up snow days. look what happens next week? we finally warm up. we want that slow melt with the snow, right? we don't want to have any flooding issues. with temperatures like this into the weekend, i think we'll be in pretty good shape there. let's get the latest on the road conditions. >> absolutely, yes. we definitely have those secondary roadways still covered. icy and dangerous conditions. two crashes on the interstate. we'll start off with a few live shots.

this is a crash, an overturned vehicle on 66 eastbound at fairfax county parkway. that is blocking the two right lanes. you can see that left side getting by. hopefully that won't hang around too long. we go from the color shot to a black and white shot along 66. they just had that offramp -- looks like they are focusing the camera. every once in a while you can see a police officer there with hat. on over to this shot. from maryland you can see things moving smoothly on 270. the offramps and bridges and overpasses are still going to be a major issue in your morning commute. you should just continue to stay home, hunker down until we climb above freedsing and get warmer in the afternoon commute. reports on a disabled vehicle on the beltway.

that is going to be going on right here route 5 blocking the left lane on the outer loop. back over to you. > at 4:24 now, here is a labor intensive valentine. tyler made a huge valin deep snow by just shuffling his feet. it took him four hours. he said he did it for his fiance, rachel. look at that. only in the midwest. we don't have that kind of room around here. >> you could have done it yesterday around here. >> yeah, you could. colorado springs the most romantic city in the u.s. that is what a facebook survey concludes. experts looked at the rate at which people switched their status from single to this a relationship. followed by el paso, fort worth, san antonio and louisville, kentucky. >> i wonder if there is a city that breaks up the most?
