good morning, america, this morning, massive storms. after slamming california with record rain, this huge system is now moving east. dumping heavy snow and freezing rain on the 100 million americans, causing this massive pileup, and there's more to come. invasion. that's what america is calling russia's latest moves in ukraine. the stern talk between president obama and putin -- it's a potential collision course. but what options does the white house really have here? out of control. take a look at that this. a truck crashes through a grocery store and mows down customers trying to dive out of the way.

what do you have this morning? >> reporter: hey, guys. the glitz and glamour, in just a few hours, but the star-stopping one tonight, it will be during the performance of the oscar-nominated smash hit "let it go" from "frozen." and i'll be telling the secrets on how they're going to make it shine in my special all-oscars red carpet edition of "pop news." >> you always look beautiful, but you look stunning. >> reporter: thanks. >> love it. >> reporter: this early. >> she handles a compliment very well. thank you. and one of the big questions this evening, the weather. california has come through a record bout of rain, and the storm is heading east across america. meteorologist ginger zee is in l.a. far from the red carpet covering it all. good morning to you.

>> reporter: great to see you and great to be here. it is drying out, things are improving. i'm still in my rain gear. there will be lingering showers. behind me, this is the los angeles river. this is usually dry or just a trickle. not much of anything. it's just one of the visuals that gives you an idea of what some 4 to over 12 inches of rain looks like. wicked waves, shattering windows in this restaurant. diners dashing for the door. storm surges crashing high and hard in southern california, taking over this pier. boats pushing ashore, injuring two workers after waves sliced into another ocean-side restaurant. >> he went through the door to the patio that had just been washed out by the wave. >> reporter: trees falling on cars, trucks balancing on bridges. the flooding rains torturing the freshly-torched foothills. sending a rescue team rafting into the waters at malibu creek

state park to find four stranded hikers. >> the system passed through, and gives us a false sense that everything's all right, the worst is gone by. we want to caution everybody. >> reporter: flooding and mud everywhere. >> buy the sandbags. >> reporter: instagram and twitter with #l.a. rain. rain pouring over gutters and damaged bridges, and cars in standing water in los angeles' korea town. >> drive a little slower, just a little more vigilant. >> reporter: with the four-day soak coming to an end, the looming threat of mud slides isn't going anywhere. >> the mud and water could be up to six feet. >> reporter: we will see lingering showers in california, i want to tell you, this storm is on the move, already producing some winter whether in many, many states. really, dozens will see this sort of storm affecting them. look at this, this is from kansas city earlier this morning at the airport.

you could hardly see anything. the snow coming down hard. not just snow, but snow and ice. a lot of these places will pick up 6, 7, 8 inches. show you what's going to happen. time it out. a majority today into early tomorrow. the pink, that's 6-10 inches. some spots, washington, d.c., west into the mountains in west virginia, you could see over a foot with this storm. that's the snowy part. then we have to talk about the ice. i have seen pictures this morning of roads and windshields just smothered in ice from northeastern arkansas to western -- excuse me, tennessee, and kentucky. that's the bullseye of ice with this storm. that's more today. of course, we to want touch on the snow, and we have to go to alex perez in indianapolis on the cold side. what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: hey, good morning. here in indianapolis they are bracing for 6-8 inches of snow. this storm is creating major

problems as it treks across the country. accident after accident, overnight that fast-moving storm coating the roads in oklahoma city with dangerous ice. denver, the snow and ice blamed for this huge pileup, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20. >> i saw red lights, and i'm underknight somebody els car. >> temperatures dropped 42 degrees in one day. authorities say at least 104 vehicles were involved in the pileup. in montana overnight, the first glimpse at the home destroyed by an avalanche that buried three people, including an 8-year-old boy. with shovel in hand, neighbors got them out. all three now recovering. >> these people are our neighbors. it could have happened to any of us. >> reporter: pennsylvania, bracing for up to a foot of snow, stockpiling mountains of salt, 20,000 tons after they were scrambling after the last storm. in indiana, another storm that

could bring highways to a standstill. >> people came out for salt, and we have to turn them away. i don't think anybody has salt right now. >> reporter: and look at this. not even the mighty niagara falls a match for the biting cold. 60% of the rushing waters, frozen. at chicago's soldier field. and the nhl's matchup with the black hawks and penguins, it was difficult to keep snow off the ice. and in missouri, they are telling motorists to stay off the roadways unless it's absolutely necessary. it's a long day and a long night for the 100 million people in the path of this storm. dan. >> so many bracing for the storm. thank you for your reporting this morning. and now to what america is calling a russian invasion of ukraine. russian troops spreading out through the strategic crimean peninsula. president obama speaking with russian president vladimir

putin, pulling no punches. it is unclear what the white house can do about all this. and we have alex marquardt on the ground. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. the pressure from russia is growing. large groups of pro-russia troops surrounding ukrainian bases, ordering their forces off of them so they can occupy them. the international warning to end the invasion is being ignored. this morning, more unidentified pro-russia armed militias in the streets of crimea's capital. they are standing just a few hundred feet from a naval base. they have twice asked the base command to surrender. so far they have refused. this is a russian invasion, the u.s. says. it has no doubt they are russian forces and demanded their immediate crawl. -- withdrawal. >> the russian military must stand down. the aspirations of the people must be respected and political

dialogue must be allowed to continue. >> reporter: putin told president obama he has a right to protect his interests in ukraine and his people. we have seen it, this column of armored carriers in crimea. most of the people are russian. and they violently took over government facilities. it has fueled civilian unrest across eastern ukraine. in one city, pro-russian demonstrators rampaged through city hall and brutally beat those who opposed them. there's a growing international chorus slamming their actions. the british prime minister saying there is no excuse. and canada is withdrawing their ambassador from moscow. but many here are hoping russia will go further. you want the russian army to come here? >> it's all family. it's not russian army. it's all family. they protect us. >> reporter: the ukrainian military is now at the highest alert level. just a short while ago, they announced they are pulling up

reservist. and the united states as we speak taking part in an emergency nato meeting to decide how to respond. >> it's unclear what the ukrainian and u.s. government can do. let's talk to george stephanopoulos. he will be hosting "this week" later this morning. good morning. >> good morning. >> the president said there will be costs if the russians invade, now they have. what kind of costs can we impose? >> hard to figure out what those could be. what the president said already, the united states will stop planning for the g8 summit in sochi where the olympics were. that's in june. the united states could refuse to participate in that and move beyond that. pull our ambassador, more of our delegation out, we don't have a full-time ambassador there right now. and the big question, go farther, try to impose financial sanctions on russia? one thing that's clear, no military action on the table. back when vladimir putin went into georgia, president bush

moved warships in and sent humanitarian aid. that's about the most the united states could expect to do. >> and putin just spent $50 billion trying to paint a new image fur russia. does that throw that out the door? does he care? >> he sees crimea as an important part of the russian empire. it was part of russia until 1954. he doesn't move to stand down right now. and he going to expand more broadly into the rest of ukraine? that could provoke more serious action from the u.s. and a decidedly lighter note, pull back the curtain on the multi-splendored light of george stephanopoulos. you're going to head to the oscars today. >> it's always such a great night. looking forward to being out there with robin and lara and josh. we have fun pieces on "this

critically. the out of control vehicle sent shoppers scrambling for cover. >> it was chaos. it looked like a bomb had gone off. it was. people were running all over the place. >> investigators believe the 80-year-old woman lost control. also in nevada, a navy fighter jet crashed during a training accident in the western part of the state. the single seat f-18 single seat hornet went down in a row mote area 70 miles east of the naval air station. helicopter and ground crews are having a difficult time reaching the crash site because of the mountainous terrain. no word on the cause or the condition of the pilot. and now to a horrifying mass knife attack in china. at least ten knife-wielding assailants with a vicious attack at a train station in the yuna province. killing 33 and injured 143. the government called it an

organized pre-meditated act of terrorism by western separatists in that part of the country. and gearing up for the trial of the century. it's monday in pretoria, south africa. oscar pistorius is charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend, reena steenkamp. it's said he mistook her for a burglar. and they said, quote, the time for public commentary is over. the focus is now entirely on a very serious trial that is set to start monday. and finally, lebron james hit the hardwood with a clear mask after the nba asked that the black mask that he had been wearing off and on since he broke his nose, he stop wearing that. the miami heat star talked about the nba's special request that he stop wearing the black mask. >> i'm good with the nba, we're good. i am not against the nba. they had a request and i fulfilled it. let's just say that.

get that out before the rest of the weather. of course the storm is on the move. today it will cause severe weather, especially in east texas. show you what the map has here. most of louisiana, parts of arkansas and just a little bit of mississippi. so just this afternoon and evening, watch out for damaging winds, potential for hail. watch your local abc station for the latest on the severe weather potential. and the cold, bringing good news on this sunday. or not. these are the morning temperatures, overnight lows that you see there. minneapolis starting by tomorrow morning, sub zero, and getting a little bit better. but the other numbers, new york city staying really cold, especially by tuesday morning, only 10 there. los angeles today, we have lingering showers, we're not dried out completely. 62 for a high. 65 up in fresno. and lingering up in the pacific northwest. we'll talk about that a little

slave," "philomena." those are my two favorite of the year. >> we believe that "12 years slave" should and could win. get over to the man for the headlines. good morning, everyone. we begin with the unfolding crisis in the ukraine. ukraine's leader says we are on the brink of disaster, and urging russian president vladimir putin to pull back the russian military. there are reports of hundreds of russian troops heading to the capital city of crimea. that's despite calls from president obama to stop the forces. and suspensions on the wild basketball brawl. new mexico state's miller is going to have to sit out two games, and vixen will be out one game for violating the unsportsmanlike conduct policy. and they hurled the ball, sparking the melee. and finally, boss like you have never heard him before. ♪

♪ i will never be wrong ♪ don't run in our blood that is bruce springsteen singing lourdes' song of the year, "royals." created quite a buzz online. that was in auckland, new zealand. he wrapped up his tour down under. no word if he's giving an encore performance in the u.s. in april. time now for the weather, and over to ginger zee out of my hometown of los angeles. hey there. >> reporter: hey there, ron. and your hometown looking a whole lot different the last couple of days. three consecutive days with an inch of rain or more. doesn't happen very often. last time, 2010. and longer, back to 2005. the los angeles river, which is really kind of -- people are telling me it's a drain usually. you don't see anything. you can see growth back there. typically no water. it has flooded on over that. that's the type of weather we

have been seeing here. now it's moving east, and the energy is meeting cold air. look at st. louis. we have an earth camera to give you an idea what has been happening. a little bit of everything. snow, sleet, rain, freezing rain. and that's how the morning is going to go. snow eventually. more than 20 states in the midwest, great lakes, and northeast, mid-atlantic too, that now have some sort of watch, advisory or warning. it's not just ice, but snow. and in some places, more than a half foot of snow. as we get into march, it's feeling like lion. one look at one last map and give you an idea of what's happening across the country. that is the long-range outlook for march. yes, it says much colder for the
