and show you the brutal cold. seven degrees in gaithersburg. 1 at dulles. -2 in manassas. it is one degree in martinsburg and seven degrees in fredericksburg. -- in frederick. very cold temperatures. we are already breaking records. first of all, we broke the record at dulles airport yesterday. we dropped to 1 degree. we got to zero at the midnight hour and now we are back to one degree again. that breaks yesterday's record and today's record, which was six degrees in 1980. reagan national, we are not going to get near that with the record at four degrees. to 30l struggle to get up degrees. however, the sunshine is back. a few clouds will be around this afternoon. when are we going to warm up? will we ever warm up? we will be milder by the weekend, but we are still talking near average by that
4:03 am
time. more details coming up in a few minutes. all of our workers coming in this morning are telling me how slick and i see things are on the roadways. icy things are on the roadways. >> still a lot of icy patches out there, so it is still treacherous on the roadways. here is a shot so you can see what you are dealing with in the district. you can see that you have some of the shiny pavement. clear, for the most part, but a lot of those roadways are still partially covered in an absolute mess this morning. keep that in mind. now we will move to another live shot along route 50. that is a secondary shot from d.c. this is going to be one of those major arteries in virginia. they treated that pretty well. things are looking great read however, same deal. you are going to have those large patches of ice and pavement showing. just keep that in mind. now we are going to head to our
4:04 am
traffic tracker. he is out braving the roadways. you can see he is moving at a good clip and the roadway is clear. the difference between the secondary and the main roadways is substantial. heading to the maps, we are not seeing any lane closures right now. things are moving nicely through maryland and around the beltway. virginia routes are good to go as well. all travel lanes are open at this time. 95, same deal there. you need to be extremely careful on those bridges, overpasses, off ramps, and curves. for now, back to julie and adria. >> the storm moved out. the ice and the snow are still on many local roadways, both slick and treacherous. john is headed to maryland. he joins us live. what are the conditions like? >> good morning. i cannot begin to tell you how
4:05 am
treacherous it is out here. my photographer and i have been walking around and it is very slick on these roads and sidewalks. this is right off of maryland avenue. take a look. this is the middle of the roadway. you can see how the plows came through and they just were not able to clean everything because it is so rockhard at this point and icy. hard/ly do you have the and road -- the hard slush and snow on the roadways, this is all ice. i cannot begin to tell you how dangerous it is right now to be walking on this. i am trying not to fall myself. if you look at the main thoroughfares, this is maryland avenue. one of the main thoroughfares that goes into the heart of downtown rockville. that is not completely clear. we can see some residue, some snow and ice as well. the point here is that there are
4:06 am
a number of roads in montgomery county that are very messy this morning. some 2600 maryland state highway administration trucks were out all day yesterday. not counting the county trucks that were working allegedly to try to clean everything up and stay on top of this storm yesterday. it was not a whole lot of snow, but what happened was you had the freezing rain and the sleet before the snow came down, so there was a sheet of ice underneath the snow and a number of accidents on 270 and some of the main thoroughfares. if you are coming out this morning, he didn't mind it is not 100% out here. take it easy, take it slow. some of these roads still look very messy. john gonzalez, abc 7 news. district residents heads up, d.c. has not lifted it's no emergence be -- emergent -- its snow emergency.
4:07 am
if you park in those areas, your car may be towed. coverage continues now. we want to get out to virginia. brianne carter is live in alexandria this morning, where she is checking out the conditions. you guys.rning to we are here in alexandria. i thought it was march and we are freezing out here, literally. take a look behind the at this road in this alexandria neighborhood. it is a straight sheet of ice. a number situation in of neighborhoods across northern virginia. the officials say that the plows are still out and they will be working throughout the day in all of the counties in northern virginia. they are also looking to try to alleviate some of this. when temperatures get down to so cold, that mixture just does not work. so we are left behind with this. this is a streak that has
4:08 am
already had one pass through from the plow. here just a slick sheet for people who are going to be driving this morning. this is going to be a problem for a number of people. we do understand that cleanup crews will be working throughout the day. i do hope that by the end of the day, they will have all of the plows through all of the neighborhood streets. they will be able to get through on one pass, but may not get down to the pavement. i hope to clean some of this up. if you do have to head out this certainly be careful. it is not just the streets, but also the sidewalks that have a similar situation. back to you guys inside. >> she says that it does not feel like march. that is true. a majorreached milestone for springtime in washington. >> find out why today is an important day for the city's cherry blossoms.

>> now you can actually see the dome. when we tried to take a shot yesterday, you could barely see it with the snow coming down. now it is just freezing. 4:10 on your tuesday morning, let's get right to jacqui jeras for a check of the forecast. no snow. >> that is the good news. but not getting above freezing, unfortunately. it is still on the ground unless it is shoveled or treated or moved off, it will be a problem. here is the snowfall across the region. we tied the record at dulles airport, 4.9 inches. opal. six inches at 6.5 inches in germantown. season brings our snowfall total to more than 23 inches. this is only the sixth time in
4:12 am
the past 31 years that we have had 20 or more. last time was back in 2009-2010. it is significant to have this much, this often. our express forecast for today, sunny skies and cold temperatures. 26 degrees by the noon hour and 31 degrees at 4:00 this afternoon. we go up from here. that is some good news. i will have those forecast details in a few minutes. >> thank you very so far, so good on the major roadways as far as accidents go. how conditions are dicey this morning. we will start off with some live shots. you can see the difference between the secondary roadways and the major interstates. you can see that wilson boulevard has had some scraping done to it. just to the left, it is still completely covered. you still have large patches and
4:13 am
sheets of ice on the roadway. of course, we had those conditions yesterday where we had rain and sleet and snow. this is the worst type of conditions when combined with those colder temperatures. now we are going to head over to 66, where we can see that that roadway has been treated and scraped. however, you are still going to have ice on the off ramps, bridges, and overpasses. keep that in mind. 95 in virginia is moving along nicely. you will also see the snow plows out in full force as john was just telling you. you do need to give them space, at least three car lengths. 295 moving into the 11th street -- no problems there. we are also getting incident-free reports from the police in virginia. right now, back over to you. >> a chemical spill contaminates
