impatient pup. a viral video from a dog that got tired of waiting for its owner. good wednesday morning, i'm john muller. >> and i'm marci gonzalez. the mystery of flight 370 is now well into its fifth day. with still no sign of the plane, passengers or crew. new video this morning shows japanese soldiers preparing to join the multicountry search crew. they will join the international effort to find the missing plane today as the flight's potential path is causing more confusion. abc's tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: the mystery deepens. authorities now say the malaysian airlines jet veered far off course after turning off its tracking signal. >> either the flight crew or there's someone else in the

cockpit that is making some decisions that don't really compute. >> reporter: the malaysian military says flight 370 banked hard to the left and then flew for an hour over hundreds of miles of land, never sounding an alarm and cruising into the strait of malaca near a tiny ro rocky island called pulau perak. they searched land and a new stretch of ocean but no sign of the missing plane, krcriticism mounting. >> it's happen hard. >> reporter: new questions about the cockpit crew. the airline is investigating the co-350i89, 27-year-old fariq ab hamid. according to a news report these two young women were invited by hamid to ride with him during a 2011 flight. >> they were pretty much turned around and see talking to us and so engaged in conversation.

>> reporter: investigators searched the homes of both the co-pilot and the captain, 53-year-old shah but so far nothing about the background that suggests foul play. the head of the cia says the agency has not heard any chatter suggesting terrorism but the u.s. is still not ruling it out. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> thanks, tahman. gloria riviera is at a military base in kuala lumpur this morning where she spoke to the chief of malaysia's air force leading the search for the plane. >> he insists he's been misquoted about a change of direction the jetliner may have taken and when gloria asked him why after five days there's still no radar data his response was a firm "no comment." stay with abc news for all the new developments on the mystery of flight 370. we have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." well, new this morning what one passenger is calling the miracle on us airways flight 678 left tampa bound for phoenix

forced to make a landing in houston. that's because a baby on board stopped breathing. two passengers with medical training saved the child. >> ran up and had the baby held in his hand upside down. the baby was purple. >> there are people that assisted and they were told there would be an emergency landing and everything went smoothly. everybody was just invested in -- when we heard the baby cry, teary moment for everybody. >> all right. wonderful. the flight continued to phoenix where it landed just an hour late. and apartment building under construction in san francisco is not much more than a pile of smoldering scrap iron this morning. the fire broke out at around 5:00 last evening and within minutes dense black smoke shot into the air. flames ate through the structure quickly producing waves of blistering heat. >> i was standing pretty close and the heat was intense. the fire was just insane how big

it got and i was really worried was it going to spread to these buildings and also this building over here. >> more than 150 firefighters and 90 trucks will battle it until daybreak at least but the chief says they are getting it under control. amazingly only one firefighter suffered minor injury. >> it will be a day of weather extremes for millions in the west, flooding concern, the melting snow pushing waterways in montana and wyoming beyond their limbs making roads up passable and isolating hundreds of people. some towns still evacuated. others taking precautions to prevent flooding. in the eastern part of the country the taste of spring is now ending. it is time to put away the skateboards and retrieve coats and gloves because winter will make a copback. the latest from jim dickey. >> a powerful winter storm moving its way out of the midwest tracking across the ohio valley and will strengthen, move its way to the eastern seaboard. the heaviest of the snow will stretch from the cleveland area

into northern new england. overnight this gets going. could be talking about blizzard conditions in the state of maine. at times feet and snow in northern new england. behind this air, our spring preview is over. many spots 20 to 30 degrees colder than tuesday. santa ana winds building up bringing them out of the 2340r9 and east, gusts up to 60 miles per hour. that could cause power outages and high fire danger. john and marci, back to you. an experienced skier died in an avalanche in montana. the 27-year-old was skiing in the back country when he was buried by the snow. he died before other skiers could dig him out. he is the fourth skier to die in an avalanche in the area in less than three months. experts say there is more danger right now because of heavy, wet to and rain. in florida the gop is the victor in a bellwether special election. voters elected david jolly

despite the democratic candidate alex sink being better known and funded and supported by the party's biggest name. the first midterm election of 2014 and a test of each party's message. one of those issues obamacare. a new tally shows a number of enrollments is going up slowly, 4.2 million have purchased it since it launched in october. 943,000 last month and 1.1 million in january. but with the march 31st deadline the affordable care program is unlikely to reach its original goal of 7 million enrollees. president obama welcomes the ukrainian prime minister to the white house. his visit comes as armed russian militia have taken control of the main airport in crimea. that's the part of ukraine that will vote on sunday on whether to become part of russia. president obama is considering economic sanctions against moscow for its military advances in crimea. and the cia is denying accusations that it spied on senate investigators who were looking into the agency's

enhanced interrogation techniques. senator dianne feinstein took to the floor yesterday to express her concerns about the cia interfering with a year's long investigation into post-9/11 agency activities. that investigation produced a controversial report that is still unreleased. feinstein claimed the cia removed documents that senate investigators were supposed to have access to. cia director john brennan says nothing like that happened. president obama managed to escape washington politics for a day for a fund raising visit to new york city and he made sure that he went home with some presents in hand. >> he did. the president stopped by a gap store where he picked up a few things for the ladies in his life. but he also worked in a little support for raising the minimum wage praising the chain's voluntary decision to increase wages. all right, there's a big stink over parmesan cheese. why some of your favorite cheeses could change names. photoshop fail. a major retailer is apologizing
