man on board makes fly. so many airline incidents and accidents just this month alone so let's get right to abc's linzie janis here at jfk with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan and bianna. that's right that man is scaring other passengers allegedly saying he wanted to blow up canada. then after that emergency landing, s.w.a.t. team members taking no chancesaking sure everybody's hands were in the air. >> hands up. hands up. >> reporter: incredible heart pounding cell phone video of armed officers storming a plane at the toronto's airport. terrifying passengers including children as they hunt down a person suspected of making a bomb threat. >> heads down, arms up yelling, the kids were scared. >> the sunwing airlines flight on its way to panama turning away 45 minutes into the flight

after 25-year-old canadian ali sahahi started making direct threats. others called him agitated. >> might have to delay you for a bit. there is an aircraft coming in from over the lake. it's going to left-hand runway -- >> reporter: two fighter jets escorting it carrying 181 passengers out of u.s. airspace. north american aerospace defense command or norad calling it a precaution. the passenger behind this describes the terror. >> once he started yelling things about the plane crashing and everyone dying, of course, people were a little taken aback by it. >> reporter: after removing him and finding no evidence of a bomb on the plane royal canadian mounted police arrested him, charging him with endangering the safety of an aircft. as for the passengers, many were put on a later flight to panama. but it was also diverted.

landing in jamaica friday evening after a passenger required medical attention. the flight eventually arriving at its destination 12 hours late. shahi is due to appear in court later this morning for his bail hearing. overnight his father telling report is his son suffers from mental health issues. dan. >> a troubled flight from start to finish there, thank you. another major story we're 2308ing. we are entering a weekend of severe weather and meteorologist steve rudin from wjla in washington is tracking it. >> good morning, dan. looking at the strongest storms to focus across central indiana into illinois where we're expecting the potential for gusty winds, even isolated tornadoes. all of our attention will focus toward the east coast as we move through the day tomorrow. a large swath from boston, new york city to washington, d.c. under a slight risk but the j k

jackpot area around charleston and lexington where a higher likelihood. rain could accumulate and could see flooding across central ohio, northwestern pennsylvania and southern virginia. coming up in a few minutes we'll look at the rest of the forecast. >> a warning for millions of americans. steve, thank you. we turn to new information on the gunfire sending shock waves through a quiet philadelphia hospital. a patient started shooting while talking to his psychiatrist. the doctor then drew his own weapon ending the confrontation. police this morning saying that they likely saved many other lives by doing that and ron is just back from covering the story in philadelphia with the latest. >> one person was shot and killed by the patient allegedly but it could have been much, much worse happening in a small hospital in darby, pennsylvania, a philadelphia suburb and that patient heavily armed on a mission to kill thwarted by the quick acting doctor who happened to be carrying a gun himself.

he is being called a hero this morning. he allegedly killed one person but 49-year-old richard plotts almost certainly would have killed more had he not been stopped in the shootout with his own psychiatrist. >> the doctor did not have the firearm, he'd be dead today and i believe that other people in that facility would also be dead. >> reporter: the brother of social worker theresa hunt agrees. >> the doctor who was armed, i think, was incredible what he did. >> reporter: according to law enforcement officials plotts who prosecutors say had a long record of arrests and mental illness arrives at mercy fitzgerald hospital around 1:30 in the afternoon on thursday. around 2:20, plotts and hunt enter dr. silverman's office. dr. silverman tells police that is when he pulls a recover from his waistband and fatally shoots hunt then turns on the doctor.

silverman gets his own gun from a pocket and exchange gunfire. silverman is wounded but escapes. plotts is critically wounded captured by two other hospital workers. police say he was carrying 39 extra bullets. crime scene photos obtained by wpvi show the aftermath of the gun battle, windows shot out and bloody handprints on carpet. now theresa's brother is wondering why she had to die. >> i'm angry at the gentleman who did it and i'd like to know why. >> plotts is in critical condition expected to survive. the doctor was wounded in the head and hand but will be okay. weapons aren't allowed on the presses but it appears he had been bringing it to work for years. today his hospital is praising

him for his brave action and looking forward to welcoming him back to the hospital. >> save so many lives that could have been lost. growing outrage over how the nfl is handling a case of domestic violence involving a star player. take a look at this video of ray rice from the baltimore ravens dragging his fiancee unconscious out of an nfl. t they are calling it a slap on wrist. >> by most accounts the nfl was caught off guard by the harsh pushback. did it address the seriousness of what happened? ray rice, number 27, not just the nfl star running back for the baltimore ravens, but a major part of the league's tv image campaign to attract women. >> find your look at nflshop.com. >> reporter: but it's this image of rice that tarnished his reputation and for some tarnished the sport.

tmz sports surveillance footage taken inside an atlantic city casino of the all pro running back hovering over then dragging his girlfriend, unconscious after he assaulted her. they questioned what would the nfl do? today's reaction to his two-game suspension continues to snowball. the sentiment is not much. >> frankly it's a terrible message that the nfl has sent. it was a stunner to me. >> reporter: consider this, the nfl's punishment for steroid use automatic four game suspension, one was suspended three games for a bar fight and one rookie got a five-game suspension for taking freebies in college. keith olbermann seemed to speak to many. >> the iron fist of the nfl has just been used against ray rice's wife and against every woman in america. >> reporter: rice's wife was charged with assault in the fight but the charges were dropped. the response from rice's team and head coach has been muted.

>> there are consequences when you make a mistake like that. i stand behind ray. he's a heck of a guy. >> reporter: that's from a team that leads the league with five players arrested this off-season. he pleaded not guilty to third degree aggravated assault he took responsibility for his actions with his wife beside him. >> you know, failed miserably. >> rice entered a pretrial interinvestigation and if completed won't serve jail time. reports the league took it easy on rice in part because of his good guy reputation and a plea from his wife for leniency but then regardless of their reasoning many believe on this, the nfl simply got it wrong. >> striking when you see the comparisons to how people get punished for steroid use or taking freebies. byron, thank you. >> not the kind of publicity they need. overseas where a 12-hour cease-fire is in effect between israel and hamas. israel agreed to the short humanitarian cease-fire after

rejecting a longer one proposed buy john kerry. the death toll now tops 800, most civilians and david wright has the latest from gaza. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. this is the new normal in gaza. people finally feeling safe enough to venture out and start to clean up the damage, the damage as you can see here is extensive. it's a 12-hour lull in the fighting. and so far it seems to be holding. this momentary pause comes after some of the fiercest fighting and shelling yet. this residential neighborhood has taken some of the heaviest hits. this is the first time it's been safe for us to come. overnight, two israeli soldiers were killed in ground fighting. many palestinians too including 18 members of a single family. the full cease-fire can't come soon enough. inside one hospital, we found a

miracle. one of the youngest casualties of this war. >> why? born friday morning by emergency c-section after the 23-year-old mother was killed in an israeli air strike. >> baby girl? does she have a name? >> the daughter of, still without name. >> reporter: the baby's father has gone into hiding. we're told he's associated with islamic jihad which may explain why his house was bombed but does not excuse the collateral damage. in the hospital the doctors are optimistic. >> i think that she will survive because she is palestinian. >> reporter: that little baby has no idea what she has already lost in her first few moments of life. it's heartbreaking stuff and as you look around this neighborhood you can imagine so

many other families grieving too, praying for a lasting cease-fire. bianna, dan. >> mounting casualties on both sides. >> a lot of pain and hope for this cease-fire, at least, for the short term. our thanks to david wright this morning. over to ron once again for a look at the other stories breaking this morning. >> hi there, dan, bianna, sara haines, hi, to you. overseas with the escalating crisis in ukraine. the u.s. is accusing russian forces of launching artillery attacks from inside russia into eastern ukraine. moscow's denying the charges and says ukraine is firing across the border on a russian village. u.s. says russia is supplying pro-russian ukrainian rebels with heavy weapons including tanks and high powered rock launchers. back in the u.s., nearly 500 firefighters in california are battling a massive blaze about 45 miles outside of sacramento. a huge plume of smoke is blanketing wine country in northern california. so far the blaze has torched nearly 600 acres and is only 20%

contained. 40 nearby homes have been evacuated. meanwhile, in washington state officials say a total of approximately 300 homes, twice as many as previously estimated burned in the largest recorded wildfire in that state's history. a manhunt is under way in philadelphia for two who allegedly carjacked an suv and then plowed into a group of bystanders with that vehicle killing three children. siblings and critically injuring their mother. the family was selling fruit on a street corner for their church when the carjacking occurred and the suv struck them. the suspects ended up crashing that vehicle that a tree and then fleeing on foot. the person's car stolen was critically injured in that crash. ohio state's marching band's director is vowing to clear his name after he was fired over charges he promoed a culture conducive to sexual harassment. on friday the marching band of the best damn band in the land went marching on but without their now former director jonathan waters. he is accused of knowing and

faying to stop hazing including students pressured to march in underwear and perform sexually themed stunts. he said it occurred before his leadership. a river in china has mysterious/turned blood red. local citizens say the water looked normal around 4:00 a.m. friday morning. two ours later it had taken on the crimson hue that you see and environmentalists suspect it may be from someone illegally dumping artificial coloring into the waterway. former daughter, first daughter chelsea clinton showing off her growing baby bump during disney's pirates and princesses good event in new york city. children at the event made pledges to help out their communities. >> you're never too young to start service and service only isn't a good thing to do but can be fun so i'm thrilled to be here. >> she is due in the fall and disney, of course, is the parent company of abc news.

to a group of passengers trying to fly out of los angeles. their flight was delayed for, wait for this, three days. abc's brandi hitt is at l.a.x. with the latest. brandi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. you know, just hard to imagine what this was like. all of us have had delays, frustration with having your flight delayed. these passengers finally had some relief this morning. but now imagine this as you mention, sleeping here on the floor with nowhere to go for several uncomfortable days. this morning, stranded flyers are finally home after an epic delay at l.a.x. >> just been horrendous. >> reporter: the norwegian air shuttle flight didn't get off to a flying start. the 285 passengers spending three days stuck in the airport. some of them forced to sleep on the terminal floor. others were a bit more lucky. >> the first night we basically went to a hotel and begged for a room. >> reporter: the flight to london was supposed to leave wednesday. but because of mechanical

problems it was delayed and delayed and delayed. flyers getting fed up. >> i could have afforded another flight i would but i can't. >> speaking out. >> might go with a different airline next time. >> i think their response has been really just appalling. they haven't been able to provide us with enough information. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news overnight norwegian air shuttle apologized for the delays and said we tried very hard to find hotels for all of our passengers but, unfortunately, capacity was limited due to obama's l.a. visit. the president was here for a fund raider. as for the flight, the airline says the delays were due to an unspecified technical problem with the boeing dreamliner. passengers were not just upset at delays but lack of communication from the crew. >> you know who else is angry, ron claiborne. >> president obama's visit is the reason why the hotels were flooded. >> ron is on the phone with his attorney right now.

johnson is slumped next to him. shot in the chest. bleeding heavily. >> he died in your arms? >> he died in between like right in between me and jose. >> reporter: what started out as a teenage lark has left one of them dead and now the surviving teens are accused of a crime much bigger than a break-in. >> they called and said he had been arrested for murder. >> reporter: felony murder because when someone is killed during certain crimes in this case, burglary, everyone committing the crime can be held responsible. >> you home invade a home it's foreseeable the homeowner is going to shoot you and the answer is, yes. >> reporter: the trial lasts four days. charged as adults, the teenagers were found guilty. with their sons sentenced to 50 plus years behind bars, the moms are fighting to overturn what they say are unjust and cruel sentences. >> we're hoping we got so many advocates we're hoping we can so no other kids have to go through

this is what happens when you get strong heavy rains, 1 to 2 inches can fall over a short period of time and this huge dust storm moved over the city. can create winds upwards of 40 to 50 miles per hour. it's going to be hot in phoenix later this afternoon, 107 degrees for a daytime high. looking for relief from the heat across the west, head over to san francisco, highs there in the lower 80s. the heat and humidity continues to build across the southeastern part of the united states. temperatures range from the upper 80s to middle 90s in nashville and then as we look at our rain totals, the best chance for our severe weather, midpart of the country, later on this afternoon, central illinois into indiana could be looking at isolated tornadoes, gusty winds and heavy downpours, this focus of attention will eventually shift off towards the east coast for the day tomorrow. national forecast calls for hot weather across the west. those violent storms across the lower great lakes and hot weather continues for miami. hat's a look at y
