highways in long island flooded. >> the avenue completely under water. >> reporter: inundating east and west. in phoenix, arizona, one man seeking refuge from the rushing floodwaters often top of his car. the fire truck driving into the water to try to save him. >> oh, no. >> reporter: but when the car starts to move underneath him, he takes a leech of faith. near baltimore, maryland, a woman and her car overcome by water. >> it was up to the bottom of the door. >> reporter: this rescue just one of more than two dozen in the area according to officials there. soaked in 6 to 10 inches of rain tuesday. >> i'm shocked. i'm surprised. i've never seen it this way before. >> reporter: in parts of michigan highways submerged. >> you don't want to be on the lodge going toward davison right now. unless you got a boat. >> reporter: an estimated 100 cars abandoned. drenched in nearly half a foot of rain. now recovering from the flooding with two reported deaths tuesday. in raleigh, north carolina, we're up to 3 inches of rain

morning. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: david, good morning to you. police now say that robin williams was being treated for depression at the time of his death and while they do believe he died in an apparent suicide they say this case will remain open as they await the results of a toxicology test. this morning, investigators releasing new details about the final hours of comedy icon robin williams' life. authorities say the oscar-winning actor's wife susan schneider last saw him when she went to bed at 10:30 sunday night. police say when she left the house monday morning, she thought williams was still asleep. at 11:45 a.m., williams' assistant knocked on his bedroom door and became concerned when she got no response. it was his assistant who called 911. >> the personal assistant was able to gain access to mr. williams' bedroom and entered to find mr. williams clothed in a seated position unresponsive. >> apparent suicide attempt by hanging. >> reporter: the comedian also

found with superficial cuts on his wrist and a pocketknife nearby. emergency workers pronouncing williams dead at 12:02 p.m. williams' longtime friend said he saw the 63-year-old last week and was concerned. what was he like on tuesday? >> it was clear to us, you know, that he was not in great shape. >> reporter: did you think it would come to this? >> no, i mean he was getting so much love and support all around him. i mean, for me, there's no making sense of any of this. >> reporter: as the outpouring of public grief goes on -- >> be kisses. >> reporter: -- his family is in mourning in private. his children releasing tapes saying "i will carry his heart with me every day." "there's mine for comfort in knowing our grief and loss in some small way is shared with millions and the world will never be the same without him." and this is that house made famous in the blockbuster "mrs. doubtfire." you can see behind me this memorial has been growing by the

one chopper crashed killing the pilot. the white house is now reportedly considering a larger military rescue mission. and back here at home a new call for peace in the suburban st. louis area after the police shooting of an unarmed teenager but for a third night, police clashed with angry protesters in the street firing tear gas and now the faa has been forced to ban some flights in the area because of gunfire. abc's steve osunsami is in ferguson, missouri, with the latest. steve, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. there are about 50 young people on the streets last night refusing orders from a long line of police dressed in riot gear. the tanoff continued well past midnight until the small group threw objects at police and police responded with tear gas during the height of the tensions here. there were people shooting at police helicopters that were chasing down people stealing from businesses. the faa has now declared a no-fly zone over thety for low-flying aircraft that continues this morning. michael brown's family is calling for justice and peace

and want to share something that happened here at his memorial that we happened to see as we were leaving yesterday. there were no cameras, no lawyer, no handlers, just michael brown's mother and father releasing a red balloon into the air. it was a very powerful moment, amy. >> steve osunsami with the latest from missouri, thank you, steve. well, a major gun control ruling this morning. a federal judge saying maryland's law banning 45 assault weapons onlying gun magazines to ten rounds is constitutional. the law is one of the strictest in the nation. and new worries in florida about a lurking threat. red tide. the algae bloom is the biggest in a decade stretching 90 miles. that's about the size of connecticut. it's already killed thousands of fish off the southwest coast. also at risk, the state's endangered manatees. the algae contaminates their food. a rare sight off new jersey, the coast guard helping rescue this massive 800-pound leatherback turtle which had become tangled if fishing gear.

it wasn't easy, but they finally got that big guy free. finally, imagine this, you're at work finishing off before your lunch break and walk out to your truck and you find this. take a look. yep, that's a black bear sitting in the front seat. it happened to a tree trimming crew in colorado. the bear got comfortable, he hung out for awhile. he didn't do any damage to the inside of the truck, however, reportedly there is a missing sandwich. >> that's what he was after. >> you leave food in your car and windows down, you don't know what will pop up. >> like it is here. >> we'll turn to that case of a small ohio town that made national headlines. two high school football players convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl two years ago. one of those players has served his time and he's now back on the football field and abc's alex perez with the story this morning. >> reporter: this morning, 18-year-old ma'lik richmond is back on the steubenville high school football team after a rape conviction that ignited a national firestorm. his probation officer defending

the school's decision allowing him back on the roster. >> i think the boy should be allowed to play. ma'lik richmond has done everything that's been asked of him. >> reporter: a judge found richmond and trent mayes guilty last year of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl after a night of alcohol and partying in august of 2012. >> all: shame on you. >> reporter: the case sparked outrage on social media after this picture went viral. mayes and richmond carrying the 16-year-old girl who appears to be unconscious by her hands and feet. this youtube video showing another student who wasn't involved laughing about the incident. >> she is so raped right now. >> reporter: moments after his conviction, richmond turned to the family of the victim and begged for forgiveness. >> i'm sorry to put you guys through this. >> in an interview for "20/20" before the trial richmond told abc's elizabeth vargas he didn't think it was rape. >> i didn't rape anybody.

i didn't witness a rape going on and if i would have thought that somebody was going raped or anything like that i would have stopped it. >> reporter: richmond sentenced to a year at a juvenile detention center served nearly 10 months and was released in january. and the ohio high school athletic association says this is a local school decision. we did reach out to steubenville high school for comment but our calls were not returned. now, under the terms of his release richmond must register as a sex offender every six months for the next 20 years. robin. >> all right, alex, thank you. now to a possible break in that brooklyn bridge mystery. two men coming forward claiming responsibility. telling "the new york times" they swapped out the two american flags with these two bleached flags. abc's linsey davis has that story for us. >> reporter: this morning, two artists are coming forward claiming responsibility for replacing the two american flags on top of the brooklyn bridge with a pair of bleached out old glories last month saying they don't understand the backlash. they consider their swap a work

of art. german artist mischa leinkauf and mathias shared this with "the new york times" in an attempt to prove they pulled off the epic feat. >> it was quite clear they scoped this out and that they saw there were not security cameras and felt they were not being seen and i think they did it because they saw the bridge as a symbol for them of lots of different things including freedom and opportunity. >> reporter: the nypd is looking at the artists' video as part of its investigate telling abc news they are "aware of the public tapes made by the german artists and that the investigation is continuing." it's not the first time the fearless duo has gained media attention for testing the limits of safety all in the name of art. this video from euromax, a german broadcasting company highlights the two artists' escapades. >> it's not about making it look

good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. through six days of testimony, the prosecution has presented what seemed a mountain of physical evidence against pedro bravo. now they're offering something you could call the most unusual accessory to murder, siri. >> for the first time jurors hearing tuesday about a chilling inquiry prosecutors say was made by a man who murdered his best friend. they found a siri search on pedro bravo's iphone reading i need to hide my roommate but the defense pointing out the screen grab was among hundreds on bravo's phone and there's no way to know if bravo asked that question. >> it's a screen shot from an iphone. it's probably not mr. bravo's iphone. >> reporter: he's accused of drugging and strangling his friend inside his suv in 2012, a murder prosecutors claimed was fueled by a fit of jealousy

after bravo learned aguilar was dating his ex-girlfriend from high school. the medical examiner testified about the fragments of duct tape found on the victim's body. >> the tape appeared to be looped about both wrists. >> and i saw them. >> reporter: on monday the jury hearing directly from the accused killer as his interrogation tapes played in court. bravo admitting to police he did see aguilar on the night of his death. >> he got out of the car and i saw him and after that i remember going in the car and i remember seeing him in my rear view mirror while i was driving away. >> reporter: the prosecution agreed that bravo did drive away but they allege with aguilar's body in the back of bravo's suv before he stashed it in a forest. >> did you obtain a search warrant for the bedroom of pedro bravo? >> yes. >> reporter: the florida man who pleaded not guilty sat stone-faced throughout what seemed more damning police testimony. >> the wallet belonged to

christian aguilar with the debit card, credit cards and driver's license. >> where were those items located? >> inside the closet of pedro bravo's closet. >> reporter: now, coming up today we're told to expect another police forensics expert could be bruising to bravo's case. now, his defense is expected to get the case later in this week. they'll have to explain all that physical evidence against him, his inconsistency and his story and, of course, his obsession with aguilar's girlfriend. robin. >> yeah, much to explain. all right, matt, thank you. we turn to that phoenix family who allegedly made crime a family business. shoplifting thousands of dollars of merchandise. two of them were caught on camera pepper spraying a security guard after allegedly stealing from that mall. abc's nick watt with the story. >> reporter: the cops tay terry vargas is stuffing stolen goods into a bag. she is picked up again hurrying out of the mall in arizona with her alleged accomplice/brother mario. a security guard is in relatively hot pursuit.

then watch phoenix police say mario blasts him with pepper spray. cops say they've never seen anything like the gang they've dubbed the family affair. >> never a family and especially at this magnitude. >> reporter: behind that tree the guard is again trying to grab the brother and sister suspects, beaten back by another cloud of spray. vargas and vargas make it to the suspected getaway car. their gang has allegedly s stol more than $15,000 worth of merchandise since november from the likes of victoria's secret and dillard's. their regular m.o., cops say, one steals while another distracts clerks and guards. >> they were relatively successful until we caught them. >> reporter: after two months on their tails cops just swooped on the vargas residence. arresting matriarch elizabeth, daughters terry and lisette, son mario and son-in-law jose. and allegedly finding this stash of stolen goods. >> they were trading these retail items for drugs but also having yard sales.

walmart living there for four days before finally being discovered. abc's ryan smith has that story. >> reporter: workers at this walmart in a dallas suburb getting a huge surprise, a 14-year-old boy found living in the store for four days. these photos show the two places where the boy hid. this one in a display of baby products and strollers and one behind this stack of paper towels and toilet paper. a scene reminiscent from the movie "where the heart is." a pregnant natalie portman forced to live in a walmart after being abandoned by her boyfriend. >> there are worse places to stay than this. >> reporter: customers stunned. >> you would never expect someone is living there and living there for four days. that's crazy relationship the teen apparently stole items from the tore to eat and slept in this makeshift bed. to avoid suspicion, the boy even took clothes from the rack changing his outfit every few hours, even using diapers instead of the bathroom to avoid detection. >> i'm wondering what his
