tear gas also fired at the protesters. >> this friday night flare-up comes after what had been 24 hours of relative calm by then a rush of emotion. police released this videotape allegedly showing michael brown rob a convenience store. moments before he was shot and killed by an officer. >> supporters calling this an attempt to smear the victim. team coverage and we start with alex perez who is on the ground in ferguson. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning, dan. we actually had to switch locates because of safety reasons, now those protests began peacefully but overnight turned violent. as many as 200 people coming head-to-head with police. overnight the shaky calm in ferguson is shattered by more violence and looting. protesters blocks streets throwing bottles. police in armored vehicles and carrying military-style rifles responding with smoke bombs. this coming hours after the name of the officer that shot and

killed unarmed teenager michael brown was revealed. >> the officer that was involved in the shooting of michael brown was darren wilson. >> the ferguson police chief naming officer darren wilson after a week of mounting pressure to identify the officer. officer wilson is a six-year rhett van of the force and has had no prior disciplinary incidents at this home no sign of wilson. police confirming wilson has been relocated after a number of threats. authorities friday also releasing in liquor store surveillance video. police say this shows michael brown, 15 minutes before the shooting. allegedly taking a box of cigars without paying. then shoving the manager who went after him. overnight that very liquor store becoming the scene of violence and looting and protesters seen exiting the store with lottery tickets. family members calling the surveillance video a distraction. >> it infuriated us and it just added to the distrust.

>> the issue is when michael brown raised his hand and was kneeling to surrender why did the police officer continue to fire and kill this young man? >> police also saying the officer who shot and killed brown didn't know brown was a suspect in a robbery and had initially stopped brown for blocking traffic. >> because they were walking down the middle of the street. >> hands up don't shoot. >> reporter: and those protesters expected back out here again today. of course, police keeping a close eye on all of this and calling on those demonstrators to remain peaceful. paula. >> alex, thank you. now to the man in charge of the crisis, captain ron johnson, calling for calm as the leader of security operations and assuring the community that he wants justice just as much as they do. abc's steve osunsami has more. >> a bunch of hugs and conversations so that's what you'll see from me. >> reporter: thursday the

governor gave him the job of keeping the peace. >> today we woke up and we're all still happy and we're all still hugging and we're all still communicating. they're asking for answers and i'm guaranteeing i'm getting to get them the answers. >> reporter: he is a son of st. louis born in the '50s and injoed the hig patrol in 1987 when there were fewer african-americans in police work. in the middle of amarch against police there he was side by side with the demonstrators. he says he doesn't want his neighbors to ever fear his badge. >> we need to make sure justice is done. we need to make sure that everybody can walk these streets and make sure that i don't have to experience i can walk the streets. >> reporter: he too is calling for justice and for peace and understanding. for "good morning america," steve osunsami, abc news, ferguson, missouri. >> a man with a difficult job, steve osunsami, thank you. now to the other story breaking overnight, two arrests in the case of those young amish girls allegedly kidnapped from their family farm stand.

police tracking down the suspects, a man and his girlfriend and abc's gio benitez has been on this story from the jump and has an exclusive interview with the people who helped rescue the girls. gio, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, good morning to you. we are at the county jail where those alleged kidnappers are being held right now. that drama unfolding overnight. >> got anything to say? >> reporter: overnight a d dramatic end to an ordeal. investigators zeroing in on a house confiscating cars, 39-year-old steven howell ii, a nurse and his girlfriend, 25-year-old nicole vasey abducted those two girls selling vegetables wednesday night. >> we need to give credit to the girls there. things they saw and remember were very influential and getting us to this point so quickly. >> reporter: authorities rushing the pair into a late night arraignment. each charged with two counts of kidnapping. wednesday night police say

7-year-old delila and her 12-year-old sister fannie were working their family's vegetable stand near oswegatchie and a vehicle pulled up and took the girls then a shocker, more than 24 hours later, authorities say the alleged captors set the girls free 30 miles away from home on this street in richville in the rain. cold, wet, barefoot and starving the children knocked on the first door they could find. jeff and family simpson opened up that door. >> they were really squared. >> i knew instantly it had to be the ones that were missing. >> reporter: they say they helped care for the girl, feeding them. >> they ate watermelon in 30 seconds. >> he says immediately they all jumped into the car and went straight home. >> the girls just ran right in the house straight to their parents and then their father came out and shook our hands. >> reporter: this morning charging documents allege howell and vasey planned to inflict physical injury. >> the team was able to interview the children and the

defendants. >> the defendants gave us a voluntary interview. the children were interviewed and between the two, we were able to come up with this set of charges. >> reporter: this morning, relief in this small town. and back out here at the county jail, those alleged kidnappers are being held without bond. they have not yet entered any plea. if convicted, they could face 25 years to life in prison, paula. >> wow, gio benitez in upstate new york. thank you very much. now to what could be a devastating blow to notre dame's upcoming football season and some past ones. the team key players including one big star have been suspended while they look into charges they cheated in class. ron, this coming on their season kicks off in just two weeks. >> it does, paula as any sports fan can tell you notre dame is a (yell powerhouse named as the top team in the country and four

committing serious academic violations allegedly. when the fighting irish practice this week there was no indication that the school whose name is practically synonymous with big-time college football was about to be rocked. four of its best players under investigation for suspected academic cheating. >> integrity is at the heart of our mission as a university. academic dishonesty strikes at that heart. >> reporter: the four players would be benched pending the investigation by the school it was reported. on friday notre dame it says it uncovered evidence that the players had someone else do their schoolwork for them. >> if this turns out to be just a group of players on their own trying to get by in a class or two to stay eligible as opposed to some sort of systemic cheating then it's much more of an institutional issue than an ncaa issue. >> it would not just affect the

four players but the entire football program. which just two years ago went n undefeated in the regular season and to the national championship game. notre dame now says it will voluntarily forfeit all of the games it won with the four players on the field if ultimately they are found to have cheated. >> academics will come first and won't be afraid to bite the bullet and take a significant hit on this. >> reporter: although the college's internal investigation is continuing, no one has been suspended yet. >> obviously notre dame fans would love to have this resolved by august 30th against rice. i don't think that's very likely. >> the irony here is notre dame is a stellar reputation for academic achievement boasting one of the highest graduation rates in the country. that threatened by potentially the biggest cheating involving notre dame athletes in its storied history. see how it plays out. >> so much pride. >> they seem intense on

maintaining it. ron, thank you. now to the once and potentially future presidential candidate embroiled in what could be the fight of his life this morning. rick perry, the powerful governor of texas has been indicted overnight. will this case mar his legacy and spoil a potential run for the white house in 2016? abc's jeff zeleny is on the story in washington this morning. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. governor rick perry has made recent headlines with his tough talk on immigration but it's the hardball politics of texas now at the center of a felony case against him. rick perry's second act was well under way. another white house bid believed to be just around the corner. but this morning he's charged with two felony counts in texas. >> the grand jury today returned a two-count indictment against him. >> reporter: count one abuse of power. count two, coercing a public official. the charges stem from his decision to veto funding for the state's public integrity unit which investigates public

corruption. a district attorney in the unit was arrested for drunking driving and belligerent conduct. he wanted her out but she refused to step down but prosecutors say his conduct ammed to intimidation. >> i tooook into account the fa we're talking about a governor but when it gets down to it the law is the law. >> reporter: overnight his attorney called the charges outrageous and appalling saying "this clearly represents political abuse of the court system and there's no legal basis in this decision." it may be a difficult legal case to prove, lawyers tell abc news, but the indictment presents fresh political trouble. his rehabilitation tour was going strong. it's been nearly three years since this. >> commerce and let's see -- i can't -- the third one i can't, sorry. oops. >> when we caught up with him in iowa he was looking ahead with optimism. >> how tough is it to make a second impression. >> second chances is what america has always been about.

>> reporter: he may be asking for a third chance. he was scheduled to visit new hampshire next week but now faces arraignment at the county courthouse in austin just blocks from the governor's mansion. democrats are calling for him to resign, republicans, though, say it's a partisan witch hunt. dan and paula. >> extraordinary turn of events. top stories we head back to ron. >> we'll begin overseas where there is breaking news. u.s. warplanes carrying out air strikes in northern iraq near a strategic dam controlled by isis. the concern has been that isis would open the blofloodgates ofe damn that could water rushing as far south as baghdad 200 miles away. back here in this country a raging fire in north hollywood in california. flames bursting through in restaurant supply building friday night, 118 firefighters battling the massive blaze. one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. the cause of that fire is under investigation.

not yet known. now to south korea where pope francis is drawing huge crowds during his visit to that country. huvens of hows of people turning out today for the postoutdoor mass. pope francis paying tribute to koreans who died for their faith back in 18th and 19th century and beatified 124 of korea's first catholics. the first papal visit to asia since 1999. this dramatic scene outside seattle, washington, a home exploding leveling the house as a man was doing roof repairs with a blowtorch. they found him in the man with second and third-degree burns to his torso expected to survive. and an update on a popular actor who is facing some serious charges, actor michael jace on the hit show "the shield" is peered to court to plead not guilty to charges he murdered his wife it their home. he called 911. police say he told the operator he shot his wife expected back

in court on september the 17th. a moving tribute for the king of rock 'n' roll. we all know who that is. happened in graceland. hundreds of elvis presley fans took part in a candlelight vigil to mark the 37th anniversary of the icon's death. the vigil took place in the garden there at graceland. his long time memphis home that attracts 500,000 fans a year. and dan harris alearn or sara haines too. a clever kitten going to use it in "pop news." i got to it first. he can open doors, he is a 7-month-old kitten and keeps popping up after the owners would close him in the room and caught the little guy in -- >> doug mulder from "the x files." >> do your cats have power. >> my cats are incapable of doing anything but cleaning and eating. they do a lot of sleeping. i'm really happy they do not

it changed had is life forever. that's coming up. first the speedy verdict in the so-called love try ang murder trial. jurors deciding the fate of pedro bravo, the young man accused of killing his own friend over a girl. >> well, apparently bravo's decision to take the witness stand, it did not help his cause and abc's matt gutman has the story. >> in the charge of first degree murder -- >> and on and on it went for the jury, there was not much to deliberate. taking less than four hours to find pedro bravo guilty of all seven counts he was charged with. including the premeditated murder of his friend, christian aguilar on september 2012. bravo repentant to the end. >> i did not kill christian aguilar. >> the judge responding -- >> this is your day of reckoning. you took his past, everything he had been and his present everything he was and you took his future, everything that he

would have been. >> reporter: until the court stripped him of his life as he knew it. >> i sentence you to natural life in prison with no possibility of parole. >> they streamed out of the courtroom falling into each other's arms. >> how do you feel? >> i don't have words to describe it. >> reporter: on that soggy september night police say bravo drankled his friend in a fit of knellous si over this woman, erika friman, bravo's high. school sweetheart. he buried his friend in a shallow grave but refused to tell police or his family where it was. after the verdict his father spoke. >> now in the minutes after the trial, are you ready to forgive? >> not yet because pedro bravo didn't show any signs of repent. >> reporter: but he added at least now his healing can begin.

for "good morning america," matt gutman, abc news gainesville, florida. >> the case is gruesome and very sad. let's bring in abc news legal analyst ryan smith this morning. ryan, good morning. thanks for coming in. were you surprised at how speedy the verdict was. >> i was not. not when you have a mountain of evidence against you like pedro bravo did. they had video of him picking a murder starter kick, duct tape and shovels. and not only that, dna evidence and blood evidence in that car. that stacked up against him and made imalmost impossible for an acquittal. >> what was the strategy behind him taking the stand. >> you had to. he had to take the stand because he actually gave a police interview beforehand where he explained what happened for hours. typically that's a dream for the defense because there's your story in court and you're not getting cross-examined but he had so many inconsistencies, so
