a.m. that epicenter about five miles north of american canyon. 15,000 people reported to be without power. abc news reporter kevin wing joining us on the phone. he lives about half hour away in danville. describe what it was like. >> good morning, paula and dan. yeah, it was very shaky start how here in the bay area this morning. it was a very long rolling sensation that lasted probably 25 seconds. and, um, almost like you're out on the water on a sailboat. it was a very rolling motion. to watch the -- the walls of my house kind of sway a little bit, a little bit unnerving, of course. >> oh, i can only imagine the way you describe it. to be woken up in the middle of the night with that rolling feeling you talk about being out on the ocean. what are you hearing about the extent of the damage in the area? >> from what i'm hear something far over the last hour and a

half since the quake hit was that, um -- there appears to be some moderate damage in the napa valley. in the cities of napa, sonoma, and american canyon, where the epicenter was. i have been on social media as well this morning, on facebook and twitter. a lot of friends happen to live in the north bay area. that area around napa, sonoma, american canyon. a few of them are saying their kitchens are a mess. the dishes have falling out of the cupboards. pictures are kind of, you know, askew on the wall. and, some of them also have power out as well. i understand from pg&e, as many as 15,000 customers are without power in the north bay area. >> we're seeing pictures of homes and stores with damage

inside. thus far, we're being told that there are no reports of significant structural damage or injuries. we have our fingers crossed that that continues to be the case. but, kevin, let me ask you one last question. are people in the area where you live, we know about san francisco, that there's a lot of preparation for this. l.a. but the people in the area where you live, north of san francisco are they generally prepared for this kind of tremor? >> you know, i would probably say that -- half of us, you know, are -- you know, preparing ourselves for the next big one, whenever it is supposed to hit. i think it's human nature, of course. the other half, you know, will procrastinate and not prepare. have all the emergency kits available in their homes. that sort of thing. i have one in my closet, of course. and i know a few of my friends also are prepared as well.

it's probably a -- it's probably 50-50. the population here in the bay area is prepared for the next big earth wake. >> abc news producer kevin wing. can't thank you enough for being up and walk us through this. we'll continue to cover this on abc news and "good morning america" throughout the show. paula, over to you. we move to the big break in the hunt for the masked executioner of american hostage james foley. officials are close to identifying who this jihadist is. and now, the race is on to find him before he strikes again. abc's chief white house correspondent jon karl has the latest from martha's vineyard. where the president is wrapping up his vacation. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, paula. he's known as jihad john. he's now one of the most wanted men in the world. u.s. officials believe we may soon know who he really is.

abc news has learned u.s. and british intelligence is closing in on the identity of the masked executioner who spoke with a british accent. on the gruesome video. his own words are proving critical to finding out who he is. we're confident he'll be identified, a senior u.s. official tells abc, and identified soon. >> you have plotted against us and gone far out of your way to find reasons to interfere in our affairs. >> reporter: using voice recogniti recognition technology, they're working to match the executioner's voice with a database of british nationals suspected of terrorist ties. they're also attempting to match the voice with communications now being monitored. >> they may be able to place it in a particular part of england. perhaps in london. >> reporter: in addition to foley and steven sotloff, who foley's executioner threatened to kill next, u.s. officials believe they're holding two other americans. u.s. law enforcement son high alert for isis-backed or inspired attacks on u.s. targets at home and abroad.

an fbi bulletin issued friday says, quote, we're unaware of any specific credible threat but warns isis has quote demonstrated the capability to attempt attacks on u.s. targets overseas with little or no warning. >> reporter: the president returns to washington late tonight. top of his agenda is what to do next. and with whether it's time to expand u.s. air strikes to include targets in syria as well as iraq. paula? dan? >> jon, thank you. so many big decisions looming for the president. let's bring in george stephanopoulos, chief anchor and host of "this week." >> dan. >> let me start with this. what do they do if theyig fure out who the executioner is. do they take him out with a drone strike or put him on trial? >> i think they most certainly will try to take him out. that's been the modus operandi for the administration since they have identified what they call enemy combatants. people who have taken strikes against the united states. you heard the president now

considering whether to expand the air strikes from iraq to syria, where isis also has many bases. >> that's the other thing i wanted to ask you about. not long ago, this president described isis as a jv team. how did it go from that to now actively considering expanding the supposedly limited air strikes into another country? >> i think the entire administration was taken by surprise with how dramatically isis expanded and gained territory and spread across iraq over the last six months. you're right. the president spoke of this as a jv team earlier this year. now we're hearing from secretary of defense chuck hagel saying this is an imminent threat to the united states. one of our guests this morning, general john allen is calling this a clear and present danger to the united states. he's calling for dramatic escalation in the campaign against isis. >> a lot of debate about whether they can or will attack us here on the homeland. i'm sure you'll get into that on the show this morning. we should say, george has a big

show in morning. he'll be talking about the threat from isis with congressman michael mccaul. later this morning on "this week." george, thank you. >> we'll be watching. thanks, dan and george. now to some big weather problems that could affect the u.s. later this week. something brewing near the bahamas. back with us, jason nicholas. from our cleveland affiliate, and he's tracking it all. good morning, jason. >> hey, paula. breaking news. the national hurricane center has named this tropical storm cristobal. no longer a tropical depression. only our third named storm of this atlantic hurricane season. it's been a very slow start. big question is, where is cristobal going? here's what's going on. we have new information, the newest forecast models. notice still a pretty the good spread of uncertainty. some take to it the gulf, others toward the atlantic. notice the general trend here towards the southeastern u.s. the cone on uncertainty here. lying within it, the outer banks of north carolina. but still, could bring some high surf, obviously some heavy

rains, gusty winds all the way from the outer banks towards south florida. those areas across the southeast must take note of this storm. cristobal has formed. a minimal tropical storm. we'll continue to watch it. >> all right, thank you, jason. this is turning out to be a busy news morning. let's check the overnight headlines with ron claiborne. >> we start with this amazing video. a speedboat going 150 miles an hour when it flipped 60 feet into the air in front of a huge crowd. on a lake in missouri. it happened saturday during the lake of the ozarks high-speedboat shootout. two men on board had to be extricated from the craft. driver is okay. but the throttle man had to be air-lifted to a hospital. he's reported to be in serious but stable condition. turning overseas, a huge fireball in gaza city. israel bombed this 12-story building. apartment building. they say it was targeted because there was an hamas operations

room inside the building. 22 people injured, including 11 children. it comes as hamas keeps up heavy rocket fire that is causing some israelis to flee. border areas close to palestinian gaza. a frightening scene at a dallas zoo, a female lion, a lioness attacking a zookeeper. one of the cats pounced when a handler failed to secure the door. the employee fired off pepper spray. he escaped with a puncture wound to his back and several scratches. and a terrible car crash in rural michigan. a scar driven by an elderly woman hit a car that was full of war veterans on their way to take part in a local parade. the 80-year-old woman died. ten others involved were seriously injured. and yankee fans honored one of their favorites on saturday. former manager joe torre, his number 6 jersey was retired in a pregame ceremony. torre led the yankees, of course, to win four world series.

a fun fact -- that now only leaves one single-digit yankees jersey among the new york yankees not retired. number 2, that belongs to derek jeter. finally, check this out. an american takes a great leap to set a new world record for longest backflip on a mountain bike. cam zink made this 80-foot jump. he says he may next complete a 200-foot jump down the road. good luck with that one. the world of x games will air a one-hour special on the back flip and his journey sunday at 2:00 p.m. eastern time on abc. that is quite an amazing feat there by cam zink. wish i could do something like that. paula? to you. and a legendary slot machine finally met its match. the lion's share, ye, it has a

backyard. and they're about to break open the door. please help, please help. >> reporter: this morning, a frightening 911 call made by a brave 12-year-old girl witnessing a man trying to break into her home in houston, texas. >> please hurry up. please, please, please. >> how old are you? >> i'm 12. help. >> you're home alone? >> yes, please help. >> reporter: the seventh grader first alerted to the danger by the family dog. she re-created her survival strategy for houston's ktrk. >> i heard sampson bark. i decided to go over here and look from there. then i saw a guy there doing something to the door. >> reporter: home alone, but not without protection. amri jandou grabbing a large butcher's knife and her phone. >> i went to the bathroom and locked myself in. >> reporter: the intruder smashing in the glass door. she immediately called 911. >> what do you hear? >> it's a noise. like something scratching. scratching something.

>> thank you. now to the scrappy chicago little league team that pulled off a victory to become u.s. champs. they have the opportunity to become world champions later today. the little guys giving a big lift to the city's south side. i spent six years in chicago. this is the best thing that's happened to chicago baseball in a long time. >> i spent five years there. what a game it was. a week ago, the same two teams squared off. las vegas against chicago. las vegas pounded the chicago team. this time, the team from chicago's rough south side, they lost the last one by a score of 13-12. this time, a rematch with a very different outcome. a seesaw game with the leads exchanging several times. and a lot of drama. this morning, the team from the south side of chicago swinging their way into little league history and into the hearts of the nation. >> i feel great. u.s. champions. it's ridiculous. >> reporter: jackie robinson

west in nail-biting rematch on saturday against las vegas, the same team that beat them only a week ago. las vegas scored three runs in the top of the first. chicago bounced back. trey hondras pounding one to right. and then hondras again this time doubling in a run in the second to give chicago the lead. >> this one ripped to right field. it's going to go! >> reporter: vegas came roaring back in the fifth. on a two-run home run that seemed to leave chicago visibly shaken. >> two strikes. he's beside himself. >> reporter: jackie robinson west battled back. scoring three times in the fifth inning. that woulde the finalcore as they end the game with a sharp, lightning-quick double play. >> back to the pitcher. double play ball. jackson, it's over! chicago wins the united states championship! >> reporter: the boys now hometown heroes. chicago celebrating in community centers, cubs fans cheering at wrigley field. even a shoutout from the chicago bulls on twitter.

>> i swear i thought it was like mike still playing. >> i'm a celebrity. >> reporter: they'll be cheering again today with chicago set to face south korea in the final. the top little league team in america hoping to become the best in the world. and jackie robinson west is not just a success story in their own right. they're part of little league's urban initiative started 15 years ago to support leagues and teams in inner city neighborhoods. a terrific program. clearly showing results. whatever the outcome today, the city of chicago intends to have a parade for those guys when they come back wednesday. chicago-style. >> and they have great parades in chicago. >> i love when the kids said, it's us. this is ridiculous. it's amazing. >> it is. >> congratulations to them. make sure you don't miss chicago as ron mentioned taking on south korea in the little league world series championship game. this afternoon, 3:00 eastern, noon pacific time, right here on

abc. i feel bad for jason now because we're going to send it back over to you to get a look at the national forecast. but, um, try following that, jason nicholas. >> how about the stretch by the first baseman to win the game? he's probably feeling that this morning. let's take a live look just south of chicago. towards st. louis. dealing with a lot of heat. there's a live look at the gateway arch. a few clouds around this morning. otherwise, we're looking at plenty of sunshine through the afternoon. 99 yesterday in st. louis. triple-digit heat again possible as you head through today. take a look here. extreme heat building across much of the eastern part of the country. heat indexes, when you combine the air temperature with the humanities, 100 to 105. excessive heat warnings are out. as well as heat advisories for 13 states. the clash of air masses. severe weather. areas of south dakota, near aberdeen, a tornado on the ground, confirmed. notice here where you have the

and welcome back. we're following the breaking story for you on the west coast. a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in california, in the napa area. struck around 3:30 this morning pacific time on the west coast. we want to bring in an eyewitness to the scene in derek moore from "the santa rosa press democrat." you're on the phone right now, correct? >> yes, ma'am. >> can you describe the scene? any injuries? >> none that i can ascertain. a lot of damage inside our home. we were awakened around 3:30. we knew immediately what it was. i tell you, it was terrifying.

we huddled together and rode it out. the next thoughts were for our two kids. we got out of bed. it's completely dark. the power is out. our kids, i think, were still asleep at that point. knocked on the doors. we couldn't get our son out. the dresser was blocking the entry way. we had to push the door open. get that out, get him out. obviously, we just threw on our clothes and got out of the house. so right now, um, people are outside their homes. assessing the damage. we hear sirens. somebody down the street's got a generator going. people are going around door to door, making sure that the gas is turned off at their homes. we're learning how to do that for the first time ourselves. this is the biggest quake that i have ever been in. i'm familiar with tornadoes growing up in oklahoma. but this is the first major quake i've been through. i can tell you. it's scary. >> it sounds scary. it sounds nice that the neighbors are coming together to help out. how much damage are you hearing

about in your neighbors' homes? how violent was the shaking itself? >> the shaking itself, it felt like -- you always hear it feels like it lasts forever. it was probably, 15 seconds, tops. you just felt like the whole house was just moving back and forth. my wife was screaming. you just feel a little bit powerless that moment. we felt like, you don't know what you're thinking. you're just coming out of deep sleep. and so we just -- we did sort of that moment where you're -- you're wrapped up in each other's arms and waiting for it to stop. we got out -- >> sorry to interrupt. i wanted to say we're glad to hear you and your family are okay and the neighbors are helping each other. we do thank derek moore from "the santa rosa press democrat" who joins us on the phone. sounds like harrowing night. >> it does. thankfully, he and his family are okay.

>> absolutely. now let's get the latest on the other top stories from ron. the latest with the islamist extremist group isis. u.s. and british intelligence are closing in on the identity op jim foley's mass executioner. he spoke with a british accent on that gruesome video last week. officials are using voice recognition technology to try to match the voice to a database of british citizens with terrorist ties. it's believed two other americans are being held hostage. look at this video. this woman crashes head on into a public bus in st. petersburg, florida. the woman survived the accident. police believe she had a medical episode. 15 people on the bus, 7 taken to the hospital with minor injuries. no charges have been filed in that incident. and a south carolina state trooper who threatened to taser a pro football player for speeding has lost his job. lance corporal r.s. salter pulled over and arrested

cincinnati bengals lineman sam montgomery back in june. he was allegedly driving 89 in a 55 speed zone. as you can see, montgomery appears to be complying with the officer, but the policeman threatened to taser him just the same. watch, as in a matter of seconds this building is reduced to rubble. and a colorful rubble it is. an implosion watched by thousands of onlookers. the old hotel in albany, new york, razed to make room for a convention center. the first building to be imploded in albany's 400-year history. >> i'm fascinated with implosions. i could watch -- >> i could watch it over and over. >> you know what else i could watch? people dumping ice water over their heads. by now, you're probably well acquainted with the ice bucket challenge. >> it combines raising money, raising awareness for a.l.s. and lowering your body temperature dramatically. lots of abcers have done this. but, you have to see this one.

and there is yet another developing story we're covering this morning. a shooting at a swanky nightclub in los angeles. >> hip hop artist chris brown hosting a pre-vma party at the club when shots were fired and people started to hit the deck. ryan owens has this breaking story from our l.a. bureau. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, paula. the lapd is still trying to sort out exactly what happened in the middle of that packed nightclub. here's what we do know. witnesses report that four shots rang out. chaos overnight at a los angeles nightclub packed with stars. including hip hop artist chris brown. the lapd says the shots were fired at about 1:30 a.m. at 1 oak nightclub on sunset boulevard. site of a preparty for

tonight's mtv video music awards. >> it's scary. when the deejay gets on at a club like that, a high line club, and tells everyone in a curse word to get the f out, that's scary. >> reporter: reports are there could be more injuries. when the shots rang out, you could see clubgoers frantically trying to get out of the way. on his instagram account, chris brown wrote he was going to be at that vma preparty. posting his video of himself inside. >> i was to the left of chris brown's tablt. table. there was words exchanged. someone confronted someone else. there was pushing. after that, wasn't very long. there certainly wasn't going to be a fistfight. guns were in -- in the house. you hear the shots clear as day. >> reporter: then this instagram video taken by a person at the nightclub shows him driving away from the club apparently unhurt. now there are reports of an altercation between a rapper and
