>> she's pulling away. >> and the lipstick remains intact. you know, along with all the excite many there was a permanent tribute from billy crystal for robin williams and we'll hear his graceful words this morning about his dear, dear friend. >> so moving. we'll begin with the latest on the crisis in the middle east. president obama has now authorized spy flights over syria using manned aircraft and drones to prepare for possible military strikes against the militant group isis. this comes as abc news learned about a new american hostage being held by the terrorists, chief investigative correspondent brian ross is here with the details. >> good morning, george. a third american hostage held by isis has been identified as a 26-year-old american woman kidnapped a year ago while doing humanitarian relief work inside syria. the family has asked us not to use her name but say isis has threatened to execute her unless they pay ransom of more than $6 million or the u.s. releases a certain high-profile prisoner. the family says the young

american was working at a hospital in the syrian city of aleppo when she was taken last year. the prisoner that isis wants released for her freesome is aafia siddiqui for the attempted murder of a soldier in afghanistan. but now her family has come forward to plead for the young woman's life. >> they were traumatized by the fact this someone else could be harmed in the name of aafia and expressed their opposition to it all. >> reporter: at the same time they continue to focus on the neighborhoods in london where several men have been recruited to become the most brutal jihadists in the organization. including this man, a one-time rapper known on youtube as ljinny whose father is awaiting trial in new york. two weeks ago he posted this on social media, a man holding the

severed head of a syrian soldier. a radical muslim cleric in london defended beheadings as just part of war. >> people kill each other. however gruesome it may look or shock the world. >> reporter: british authorities say they don't believe the rapper was the executioner of james foley but say they are close to figuring out who he is. starting with the eyes of the hooded man advanced facial recognition experts created this likeness of the possible killer first clean shaven then with a mustache. in addition to trying to re-create the face behind that mask authorities now are also as we reported continuing a voice analysis of the executioner's distinct british accent. >> we had the significant new move by the president authorizing spy flights over syria. >> trying to gather intelligence there. the president resisted going into syria with any kind of action but now in the wake of the execution of james foley, that calculation seems to have changed. >> the syrians warning against it this morning. thanks very much. brian, we want to move now to the scorching heat, the hottest temperatures of the year for much of the nation and on

each coast, big surf from two different hurricanes and ginger is tracking it all. good morning, ginger. >> we'll start with the dangerous heat and heat becomes dangerous when it's cumulative and has been. yesterday st. louis, first 100 of the season. and today the heat index, you can see, will value anywhere from 101 in houston and st. louis on their seventh day with an excessive heat warning. that's what happens. now the heat dome presses east at least for a short time. new york city, philadelphia, d.c. all looking for 90s by the midweek and it will break quickly and rough surf from cristobal. it won't affect you unless you're getting in the water. do look for dangerous rip currents and then we've got hurricane marie. at closest point about 800 miles away, waves could reach 10 to even 20 feet, george. >> okay, ginger, thanks very much. everyone is trying to squeeze some fun out of these last weeks of summer. when you fill up the car this labor day weekend you'll get a nice surprise at the pump.

abc's rebecca jarvis here with the details. >> hi, george. good morning, at least it's going to cost you less getting to that fun if you're driving. gas prices this labor day weekend are expected at their lowest level in four years. the national average price for a gallon of gas this morning is $3.43. that is already a full 16 cents cheaper than last labor day and it's going to be nice relief for those 29.7 million americans expected to hit the road in a few days for the labor day holiday weekend trying to get in those last moments with the family this summer, george. >> rebecca, what's behind the drop? >> the big thing is oil is dropping in a nutshell because we saw prices earlier in the summer above $100 a barrel. there were fears that the inability in iraq would hit oil supplies. they didn't in any major way plus here in the united states we're producing the most oil since 1972. that is driving oil prices down and as a result, prices at the pump are dropping too. >> this will continue? >> this will continue. it gets better from here, george. prices are expected to average 3.20 to 3.25 for the rest of the

year. >> fantastic. thanks very much, rebecca. now to amy with today's other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with the desperate search for a new jersey student missing in israel. there are concerns that 23-year-old aaron sopher may have been kidnapped while hiking outside jerusalem as revenge for the killing of a palestinian teenager. you may remember his body was found in the aim area last month but no evidence of any foul play linking those cases, he was apparently hiking in a steep area with no water. meanwhile, an escalation overnight in the war between israel and hamas militants. israel bombing two high-rise buildings in gaza, 25 injured. now to our exclusive interview with the mother of theo curtis, the american held hostage for 22 months. this morning nancy curtis is revealing the first thing she did after learning her boy was finally coming home and what he's doing now. what was the moment like when you heard he was free?

>> i got a call from the fbi agent and she said, nancy, your son is standing beside me right now. >> reporter: her son, 45-year-old freelance journalist theo curtis free after being held for nearly two years. >> i spoke with him briefly yesterday. >> what was that like? >> he was so excited saying mom, they are being so nice to me and they put me in this 12-star hotel and i'm drinking a beer and there are women. >> reporter: curtis released to u.s. government personnel sunday. his captors, syrian militants loyal to al qaeda letting him go just six days after a different terror group, isis, brutally murdered american james foley. >> the first thing i did, i sat down, i sent the e-mail to diane fol foley, who we've been through so much together and i didn't want

missing. back at home a major security breach at san diego's airport of the a man was arrested wearing ang airport safety vest after spending an entire night sleeping in a jet bridge. when security finally questioned him, they say he tried to board a flight. no word on his motive. and switchers in massachusetts are back on alert after another great white shark spotted off the coast from a police headquarter, he looks pretty big. that beach, though, open once again this morning. and finally the lunch hour in one office was especially wild the other day. that's because this guy was blocking the hallway to the c cafeter cafeteria. >> what is that? >> that's a moose. he apparently just walked in and then just stood there. he refused to budge for six hours. >> i thought it was an art installation. >> happened in germany and police had to tranquilize him and returned him back to the woods but he was not moving and no one was eating apparently. >> are we sure that's not james franco doing one of his

installations in costume? >> thank you. thank you, amy. we turn now to the growing ebola crisis. while doctors here have had some success treating the disease it continues to march relentlessly across africa. dr. richard besser made a return trip to the hot zone in liberia to see what it will take to stop this deadly outbreak and good morning to you, dr. besser. >> reporter: there have been outbreaks of ebola for 40 years but none that caused the devastation they're seeing in this. i went to the country's largest hospital to see the heroic efforts under way to save lives. this morning, a look inside the hot zone, a make-shipt ebola clinic. used to be used for treating people with cholera and now it's ebola. open just nine days ago it's now at full capacity. nearly 60 ebola patients, many without beds to sleep on. >> highly contagious, highly

infectious. very dangerous. >> reporter: we suit up in full protective gear and go inside a triage unit, a highly infectious area www.suspected cases first arrive. they're assessed to see if they could have ebola and if they are put into isolation. just outside the keen is pock lip tick, a courtyard where ebola patients sit and wait. some are confirmed cases, others waiting to be tested. this is one of the most important places where the health care workers when they come out get sprayed down and take off their protective gear. for health care workers here there are many challenges. they desperately need more resource, more beds and more protective gear. are you worried being in the hospital taking care of ebola patients? >> indeed, we are worried but we got to come because if we all sit back, there will be no one to care for our brothers and sisters. >> reporter: it has been torrenti torrentialally raining in liberia which is adding to that feeling of global isolation. many airlines canceled flights in and out of the country because of the fear of ebola. you know, while it was easy to

get in here to report on the story it may be difficult getting out. george and lara. >> unbelievable. he's doing some great work over there. >> he sure is. so many questions. the all-out search for a college student who disappeared. lucius robbi hasn't been seen in a week and we have more. >> reporter: friends, family and volunteers are desperately searching this vast mountain wilderness for any sign of 21-year-old lucius robbi. >> we're very, very worried at this point. >> reporter: it's been one week since robbi set out from horseshoe bend heading for missoula, montana, to start his junior year in college but never showed up. >> it was his first day in school and he's not the kind of boy that would miss that. >> reporter: his family says he is a skilled outdoorsman would worked summer as a rafting guide. they say he planned to explore along the way, even bringing along two orange kayaks. >> the plan was drive halfway,

camp someplace, maybe do a day hike, he's an avid kayaker. >> reporter:over night a new clue. volunteers scouring through gas station surveillance footage spotting what appears to be robbi's car in garden valley, idaho, just 30 miles from where he started. about 20 minutes later his family says his cell phone was picked up near the town of loehmann but from there the trail goes cold. >> i am desperate to find him and desperate to know that he's all right. >> reporter: now his family and an army of 100 volunteers are pouring over maps calling for more planes and helicopters hoping they spot those bright orange kayaks that lead them to robbi. >> if anyone can survive out there for seven days, he can do it. >> reporter: for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> we sure hope he's right. we turn to all the excitement at tv's biggest night, the emmy awards filled with fabulous fashion, some big wins and an emotional tribute to robin williams. he shot to fame as we all know

consequences. >> hi, my infant son is locked in the car in a parking lot. >> reporter: shana had just finished shopping at this tampa, florida,rugstore when she strapped her 10-month-old jack in the backseat of her car and shut the door not realizing she left the keys in jack's idle hands. >>n those three seconds when i was moving the cart he hit the lock but. she immediately dials 911. >> it's so hot outside. >> reporter: worried but still keeping her cool. >> can somebody come out and open the door? >> reporter: certain the dispatcher would be eager to help. she was wrong. >> they won't be able to try to gain access to the car unless the child is in some kind of distress. >> reporter: you heard right. despite temperatures nearing the triple digits the dispatcher telling her they wouldn't come to free him unless he was clearly in distress. >> the dispatcher made a mistake. this is not the way we do business. >> reporter: that's what shana starts to panic. >> that was the scariest part

watching him change and get obviously much, much hotter. >> reporter: eight minces after her initial call an off-duty police officer notices the frantic mother and calls 911. >> she's a little distraught. >> reporter: this time getting a different dispatcher and different response. >> she says she called 911 and they said they're not going to come out unless the baby is in distress. >> no, no the at all. >> reporter: time is running out. with temperatures soaring another shopper uses a wrench to break a window and rescue jack and it's just in the nick of time. temperatures inside a car can quickly get into the triple digits soaring nearly 30 degrees in just 15 minutes. every year an average of 38 children in this country die after being left in a hot car. last year it was 44. this morning the tampa police department says it's launching an investigation and as for shana she says she's grateful for the man who let her use the phone and the police officer who

was there but in the end it was somebody using a wrench. >> you go the to thank that guy, as well. thanks, brandi. >> scary. now we turn to a terrifying story out of west virginia. a man attacked and wounded by a bear. able to fight it off only with the help of his dog. he is speaking out about his ordeal and the heart-stopping 911 call describing it all and abc's mara schiavocampo is here with this very close call. mara. >> terrifying moment for this man. good morning, lara. that man and his dog were simply hiking in the middle of the afternoon when they found themselves face to face with a family of bears. and the momma bear was determined to protect her cubs. >> a bear attacked him. he's bleeding profusely. >> reporter: this morning, the harrowing 911 call capturing 59-year-old steven kirchbaum's agony moments after being attacked by a black bear. >> i need to get to a hospital. >> reporter: the researcher and his lab henry wyching through the george washington national

forest thursday afternoon unexpectedly coming face to face with two bear cubs and their momma. >> i see these two small cubs maybe 30 pounds apiece running up this slope. this mother bear who was closer to me comes running towards me. >> reporter: that's when kirchbaum says the estimated 250-pound bear pounced. >> she bit my thigh and knocked me to the ground so i'm on my back and she's biting my leg and i'm kicking like this. >> reporter: kirchbaum says henry instantly jumped into action coming to the rescue attacking the bear back giving kirchbaum the precious time he needed to grab a rock. >> well, i hit her in the head with the rock there kind of like right in this region didn't want to hurt had you but just wanted her to stop biting me. >> reporter: the pair both wounded in the attack managing to escape and walk the three-quarters of a mile back to kirchbaum's car driving to this

nearby fruit market where own e le -- owner eddie richards called 911. >> i saw nothing but blood on his leg down his chest. it was horrific. >> reporter: in kirchbaum's case his best friend turned out to be his best defense. >> i am happy to be mere and i think henry was a huge part of it not being worse. >> that's a good dog. now experts say one of the most dangerous black bear encounters possible is one with a mother and her cubs. they say if you do have an unexpected run-in, the thing to do is back away slowly and quietly. >> and quickly. >> walk away fast. >> fast but slowly. >> it's a trick but it's possible. >> it'll keep you safe. these attacks are really rare. interactions are pretty common but black bears don't want any trouble. >> i know. >> just saying. henry, a great dog. thank you, mara. ginger, what do you have. >> hail in colorado springs is

now we're back with an air rage story. two passengers get into a fight and the flight has to be di vered all thanks to those widely available knee defender that preinterhaves the passenger from reclining their seat. abc's david kerley with reagan national airport's story. >> reporter: it's these two little pieces of plastic that caused this heated argument, caused the diverse of a jetliner and that unplanned landing. it was passenger against passenger on a united airlines 737 from newark to denver forced to land in chicago. the problem, reclining seats. or rather the lack of reclining seats because of a $22 product brought on board. the two passengers in middle seats in economy plus. those are the seats you pay extra for a bit more legroom. the man in 12b using what's called a knee defender on the seat back in front of him. those brackets placed on the tray table keep the seat in front from reclimbing.
