11:30 pm
the guamame's over, but for evet golson, the last series, the pick six, you want to try to come back and get your confidence reaccomplished. >> chris: hand the ball to hunter. his first touches at notre dame. takes it down inside the 20. ford wrapup coming up after the game with robert flores. recap of all the scores including kirk's correct pick of missouri over south carolina in columbia, partner. good job. that s.e.c. east is wild. >> kirk: wide open. >> chris: second loss for the gamecocks in the conference. they've played three home games. mcdaniel cuts it back, barrels down inside the 15, that's a first down. >> kirk: missouri lost to indiana, then going to columbia, south carolina, and winning a game. >> chris: what do you make of
11:31 pm
this notre dame performance now? 4-0. they have a back-loaded schedule. we talked about stanford and florida state, usc coming in. >> kirk: they're going to have to get better. for them to be able to beat teams like stanford or a florida state or a usc, going to have to be able to run the football better. and everett golson's going have to play the way he's capable of playing, which is avoiding mistakes. >> chris: our friend dick vital, huge notre dame fan, says, better than all you experts have said, baby. they'll win ten games this year. >> kirk: he's probably -- he's probably counting on losses to florida state and, what do you think, usc out at the coliseum? i don't know. >> chris: does he mean ten in the regular season? that would be logical. >> kirk: yeah. but you know what? everybody on their schedule, if they play the way they can play, they can -- they can play with
11:32 pm
everybody on their schedule. >> chris: bryant. hit hard by cameron lynch. >> kirk: notre dame fans think no matter who is on the roster, they're going to win 10, 11, 12, every year. but i'm shocked by, if you are just observing notre dame, is the way you're playing a group of wide receivers, a group of wide receivers, that didn't play at all last year. your playing a quarterback that didn't play last year. you're breaking in an offensive line and you're still trying to find the right combination. your entire front seven with two exceptions, they're gone from last year. you are still trying to find a secondary you're comfortable wi with. there are a lot of enough faces that are playing a lot of
11:33 pm
football for notre dame and they're sitting here now at 4-0 and, again, they have to get a lot better if they want to beat some of the heavyweights that are on their schedule. pretty impressive when you consider all those things. >> chris: notre dame could score more points, they've hit the 30 point mark for the third consecutive game. something no irish team has done since 1943. two points short of that mark right now. golson fires. looks for the end zone. lobs the ball down -- oh, in and out of the hands. he had it. >> kirk: they do miss carlisle tonight. pretty good effort with the left hand. i thought he might bring that in with one arm. see, not you can get away with a little bit of pushing and shoving with darius kelly, the
11:34 pm
defensive back, the safety, because his head's turned back. great effort. >> chris: would have been a gem. just able to get it and he got his feet tangled up. so, third and 23. golson, the screen. back inside to make the catch and take it down to the 20. so, fourth down. see if kelly does send out the field goal team. >> kirk: syracuse calling a time-out. >> chris: 30-second time-out with 2:01 to play. kelly will be happy for the win, but as you pointed out, there's plenty of teaching points, beginning with the quarterback. more work to do with that offensive line. >> kirk: five turnovers, i don't care what the final score is. you just have to say, five
11:35 pm
turnovers? that's why there's plenty of work to be done for brian kelly. and his quarterback, he's had some highs and lows. what more can you say? there's potential with notre dame, but a lot of work still to be done. >> chris: you talk about a bizarre evening. you would never say, hey, everett, you're gouge to go out there, you're going to have four turnovers a couple of picks, a pick six and yet it's going to be considered a great night. brindza is going for this field goal which would get the point total to 31 and match that start in 1943. great notre dame national championship team. brindza from 37, going to have all that notre dame kicking records before he's done. there's a flag down as the ball sails through. check the marker. >> kirk: syracuse offsides.
11:36 pm
>> chris: whigham came off the edge. >> referee: offsides on the defense. >> chris: so, the field goal stands. here's the pacific life game summary. >> kirk: well, everett golson. i think we've said this a few times tonight. it's been and up and down night with the turnovers. at one point, 25 straight completions, which was a school record and one shy of an ncaa record, but he has made some great throws. in all honesty. four touchdown passes. he's just got to be more consistent. the thing that his coach and anybody that's watched him said, two things he's doing great, accuracy and taking care of the football. they have one turnover on the whole year coming into this game and tonight, five, so, that's -- that's the area they've got to eliminate. >> chris: golson was short of the fba record. now one short of the notre dame
11:37 pm
career record. going to get a chance to show you old angelo petelli, because they hit that 30-point plateau. excited about th? going to see black and white footage. >> kirk: i love the black and white. >> chris: slinging it around. this was year two, i think, of frank leahy's wing t. championship team. they played 7 of the top 13 teams in that streak. you talk about a tough schedule. the irish fans think this team's got a tough schedule? they beat michigan, they beat navy, they smother people. they ran up the big score and this is the first teamince then.
11:38 pm
>> kirk: notre dame's first heisman trophy winner. >> chris: that's a good look there. >> kirk: i like that. 16-point lead. final two minutes. hunt flips it short. gulley takes a shot. evaluate notre dame's defensive performance tonight. talk about the offense and the mistakes. >> kirk: like i said, you have a new defensive coordinator in brian vangorder. bob bdiaco was talked about so often, the run they had in the last few years and of course, now the head coach at uconn. i think they are off to a great start. really impresimpressed. brian vangorder, again, a guy that's very, very respected. he looks like he could still play himself. think about jaylon smith, played a lot of football last year and sheldon day, but ishaq williams being suspended. so, you're breaking in a lot of guys who were backups. they spelled players a year ago
11:39 pm
and now on that front seven, they're playing and they're playing well. joe schmidt, the classic example of that. d jones, okwara, examples of that. >> chris: syracuse is going to fall to 2-2. still looking for that first win over a top ten team. completion and the ball comes loose and the orange fumble it. estime had the catch and the ball got knocked loose. and the receiver is down on the field. kirk, it was a syracuse home game, as i recall, back in september of 1992, the buckeyes going there. syracuse is ranked -- look at the quarterback with the giant shoulder pads there. how could you throw the ball? >> kirk: i don't know. back in the old days. >> chris: wreckless throw into
11:40 pm
double coverage. >> kirk: yeah, that was not good. but it worked out. >> chris: you shocked the cuse, 35-12. >> kirk: back in those days, syracuse, in the carrier dome, they were hard to beat. they were athletic. remember marvin graves, run the option? >> chris: oh, yeah. estime will be helped off. that's about the last thing syracuse needs is another injury to the receiving corps. terrel hunt, continue to show what a tough guy he is, playing through pain. a lack of weapons on the syracuse team right now. >> kirk: yeah, i mean, we knew coming in, if they were going to hang around, terrel hunt was going to have to keep them in there, with his mobility and ability to make plays, but up front, it's been a bit of a mismatch. notre good job at the point of attack. >> chris: completion on first down. short week for the cuse, as louisville comes to the dome on friday. and then florida state.
11:41 pm
they play nine straight weeks, which includes a stretch at clemson's death valley. tough schedule ahead in the acc for the orange. another complex into traffic, nice catch by adrian flemming, the senior into irish territory. >> kirk: there was so much about where are they going to be, the big east, the aac, they finally found a home in the acc. i think that's finally going to help them as they grow in football and all their sports. i think they're going to fit in. it's different rivalries. >> chris: hunt, near sideline. fleming couldn't hold it. 31 seconds to play. >> kirk: going to have a big impact on recruiting. i think -- one thing we know about scott shafer is, he has, you know, he has ties to ohio. they want to do well in this state here in new jersey, new york. but they also want to be able to move down the coast and i think the visibility of being in the
11:42 pm
acc can help them be able to accomplish that. >> chris: new jersey/new york area. pennsylvania's not far away. important recruiting turf for both of these programs. the irish have a long history of coming into the state of new jersey and grabbing players. hunt pump fake. fires far side incomplete. five notre dame turnovers, but syracuse able to convert them into just six points. that was the pick six and they missed the point after. >> kirk: first quarter alone, two turnovers that they weren't able to do anything with. i mean -- and we talk -- if you are going to hang with notre dame, one thing you got to do is capitalize, if everett golson is going to give you the fooft ball. you got to take edadvantage of those chances and they weren't able to do that. >> chris: golson is a perfectionist. 32 of 39, 362, four touchdowns -- but you know he's bothered by the four turnovers. >> kirk: he know what the film room is going to be like with
11:43 pm
brian kelly. you know what i mean? >> chris: i know what you mean. >> kirk: not only a perfecti perfectionist -- he -- >> chris: brian's been grumpy. he's got a high standard for this team and he knows there are tougher opponents that lie ahead beginning the next game against stanford. they can't get away with five turnovers and win very often. >> kirk: no. clv another fourth down. cuse needs ten with 21 seconds to play. blitz. hunt flushed out and fires incomplete. that was jaylon smith flying through and quarterback hits the deck. good effort from hunt, just not enough to work with tonight. >> kirk: he deserves a lot of credit for hanging in there and showing a lot of toughness. i thought at the end of the half there that hit he took from cole luke might keep him on the sideline, but he was determined, as he told -- as scott shafer
11:44 pm
told heather, he wanted to come back. and he gave it a great effort, but he'll be in the ice tub for a couple days after this game. >> chris: chance to thank the sports information staffs from both schools. as the irish here in victory formation. golson takes a knee. and a 16-point win for notre dame. as they go to 4-0, with the cardinal coming to notre dame stadium next. bizarre night, as the quarterback's number matches the number of turnovers for notre dame's team, but golson coming up one short of the fbs record for consecutive completions with 25 in a row, new school record. robinson with his dad watching, heavily involved tonight. couple of touchdowns for will fuller. and then irish defense does a great job. heather with brian kelly.
11:45 pm
>> heather: chris, thank you. coach, congratulations. you came in at 3-0 and you were the first one to admit you still had a lot of questions about your team. what did you learn about them tonight? >> that you can't turn the football over and expect to win all your games. yeah, you know, we did some good things tonight, obviously syracuse is a very aggressive defensive team and, you know, we managed ourselves offensively, is the best way i can put it, but five turnovers is just not going to get the job done. so, we're pleased with the victory. it's hard to win in college football. we'll take the victory. but we got to do a much better job taking care of the football. >> heather: what changes did you make after the first quarter to really turn things around? >> yeah, well, we just needed to get the ball out of everett's hands quickly. and then make sure that we got an opportunity for some big shot plays, which we did down the field to will fuller, so, it was really just getting the ball out quickly. they were in a lot of fire zone pressures, getting the ball on the perimeter was really the best way for us to manage the game. >> heather: and now you head into a big week against stanford
11:46 pm
at home with a 4-0 record. but where do the improvement lgs need to come, obviously the turnovers to get the win. >> i have to do a better job coaching him, so, if i do a better job of that, i'll get smarter, he'll get better and we'll be happier. >> heather: brian, thank you. everett, congratulations. really, an interesting night because, set some records, passing completions, but a lot of turnovers. what's your take away? >> sloppy. very, very sloppy. i know my team expects more of me. i have to be better. i came out and had a sloppy first half and i was lucky, though, but i have to come out and be cleaner. >> heather: we saw a lot of one on one conversations with your coach. what was the message? >> just keep your head up. try to really encourage me, things like that. i also had my teammates there. so, i mean, i'm glad, you know, when i'm dealt with a little bit of adversity, i have guys that
11:47 pm
support me and bring me up. >> heather: and tonight, a record-setting night with consecutive passing, some are saying 25, some are saying 26. regardless, it is a school record. what does it feel like to be in that type of a zone in that moment? >> it feels decentnt, i guess. i mean, honestly, i didn't know from the beginning, but you know, i kind of overheard it on the sidelines, things like that, so, i mean, like i said, i -- just got to come back and be better. i'm happy. kind of in the record books, things like that. but i got to come out and play way better than i did tonight. >> heather: thank you, everett. chris? >> chris: brian kelly called him a game manager two years ago. now he has to be a play maker. when you can throw for 362 and four touchdowns and feel very unhappy with your performance. >> kirk: you can just hear him talking there with heather that -- you know, the numbers are there. they put up over 500 yards of offense. put up points. there's a lot of good to take away from this. it's not the end of the world. but for a coach that prides himself in taking care of the
11:48 pm
football and the quarterback making great decisions, there's just a lot to learn from. as good as he's looked, he didn't plait one snap last year. so, he's going to have these moments and he's going to have to learn from them and he's the first one to admit that you have to learn from it and get better. that's what this is about tonight for him. >> chris: the irish defense made third down a nightmare for syracuse. they converted just 3 of 15. so, notre dame wins it by 16. moves to 4-0 with stanford coming up next. next saturday night, 8:00 p.m. on abc, the big ten battle, as nebraska takes on michigan state in east lansing. tonight's game produced and directed. for kirk and heather, this is chris fowler saying good night from east rutherford. the irish win it. time for the ford wrapup show. we send it now to robert florpless.
