that american journalist back home for treatment here on american soil. this morning, freelance american cameraman ashoka mukpo due back in the u.s. he left lie bear ya yesterday in a specially e ququipped plane l this one. making a refueling stop in bangor, maine. >> we were getting about 50 calls a day. it's up to about 800. >> reporter: as the first patient ever diagnosed in the u.s., thomas eric duncan, fights for his life. his conditioning worsening to critical. he's now on a ventilator and dialysis after kidney failure. >> this is very serious. we're taking it as such. >> reporter: doctors focusing on duncan's girlfriend and eight other high-risk parkts who had direct contact with him.

about 40 others are being monitored for symptom as well, including a homeless man who rode in an balance after duncan. this, after a weekend scare at newark's international airport on a united flight from brussels. teams in hazmat suits meeting a sick passenger from liberia on the runway. the man later found not to have the virus. a new reality for travelers in the fight to stop the spread of ebola. the cdc is considering expanding airport screenings of passengers traveling from the hardest hit countries to possibly include taking their temperatures at quarantine stations to find infected flyers. that lack of an ebola vaccine has duncan's girlfriend concerned and angry, too. she feels dunk season not getting the same treatment that other infected americans have

enterovirus d-68 is now being blamed for the death of a new jersey preschool student, the first official fatality confirmed to be caused by the virus alone. >> i think it's just got everyone concerned and, i think we just need more information. >> reporter: officials say 4-year-old eli waller went to sleep the night of september 24th and never woke up. >> i think eli's case is the exception to the other cases around the country. he had no science of illness that night. and his passing was sudden and shocking. >> reporter: eli, the youngest and only boy in a set of triplets. officials say his sisters appear to be okay. >> they're perfectly fine. perfectly healthily. >> reporter: another preschooler at his school being tested for possle infection this morning. district officials say they're thoroughly cleaning all schools. they're advising people to remain home from school or work if they're sick.

>> thanks to lindsay for that. >> so scary. so sad for a child this age to be lost. for most children, this has been simply a cold. it appears like a common cold. there's probably hundreds of thousands of children who have had this. the kids at most risk is those with asthma or difficulty breathing. apart from hand washing, it's hard to prevent this. for most children, it's a mild disease. >> for most. only if your child has these underlying conditions should you be extra concerned. >> that's right. parents have to give themselves a break as well. it's hard to stop the transmission of cold viruses. each enteroviruses, there are quite a few deaths. it's hsad. but it's not unexpected.

coming up on 7:42 with "gma" on the lookout. this morning, the unexpected risks of escalators. thousands are hurt on them every year. mara schiavocampo has the story. >> reporter: escalator accidents are common. they can cause serious injuries or worse. there with ways to protect yourself. including the one tip everyone should know. ♪ escalators. stepping on could bring you a step closer to an accident. watch as this surveillance video shows air travelers at palm beach international airport facing a different kind of turbulence. tumbling down the escalator. "gma on the lookout" learning escalator incidents led to an estimated 12,000 e.r. sits last year. they can even be fatal. we're talking about the potential for very serious
