couple's day-long rampage. the massive manhunt and how they stopped the carnage. and the hunt for the woman defacing national parks. painting on rock formations and posting her work online. how social media is helping to track her down. and good morning. we are going to start with the deadly school shooting in washington state. students sprinting outside to get away from a killer who turned a cafeteria there into a crime scene. >> this was not an outcast. he was a popular kid, a football player who had just been named homecoming prince, and neal karlinsky has the latest from outside the high school in washington, neal. >> reporter: good morning. the school remains locked down this morning, still very much an active crime scene. investigators trying to

understand why a popular student would allegedly go on a shooting spree. >> we have information of a possible shooting at at high school in the cafeteria. >> reporter: 10:39 a.m., t call from 911 from inside the school. >> an active shooter for now. >> reporter: witnesses calling into the seattle station. >> there are five to six shots. i counted five, but think there was six. >> reporter: emergency responders swarming the area. there was a student gunman methodically shooting kids at a lunch table inside the school's cafeter cafeteria. >> with we get another gunny. >> reporter: moments later, the suspect is reported dead from a gunshot wound. another student is dead, and two of the injured were the shooters' own cousins. >> they got in a fight, and had

it going on. >> reporter: this year's freshman homecoming prince. while not identified by police, law enforcement sources say he is jaylen fryberg, a football player and popular student. >> from what i heard, there were a couple bowling incidents where people had said some things about him in a class. and, you know, he -- the way he handled it, he did fight the kids. >> reporter: twitter offers some clues, writing thursday morning, it won't last. it'll never last. he seemed to be upset earlier in the week, tweeting, it breaks me, it actually does. i know it seems like i'm sweating it off, but i'm not and i never will be able to. >> we're all going to pray together. we're all one big family at home that was there. that was sitting around the table. one big family. that's the ones that got shot. >> reporter: three of the victims remain in very critical condition this morning. the alleged shooter's family, members of a prominent native

we went to the back gate. and it was closed, and we're all trying to help each other hop over the fence. there was so much screaming and crying and confusion. no one knew what was happening. >> just really shocking to find out family had been shot. >> they were my friends. >> and the question so many are asking is why. and now the ebola emergency. an overnight scare in new jersey with tighter rules in effect. hazmat crews brought in to decontaminate the apartment where the doctor who caught the deadly disease lives. lindsey davis has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, paula. a sigh of relief in new jersey this morning. the health care worker under quarantine since treating patients in west africa, while she is sick with something, she does no have ebola. this morning the health care worker put into isolation

testing negative for ebola. the worker tied to doctors without borders was quarantined for 12 hours. she did develop a fever in isolation, according to officials. governor chris christie said the health care worker would be the first to be placed in quarantine under the stricter new policy for those returning from the hot zone in western africa. >> new jersey and new york are going to determine the standards of quarantine since the cdc's guidance is continually changing. >> reporter: new jersey and new york overriding the cdc, enforcing a mandatory quarantine for any individual who had direct contact those infected. >> it's closer to home. >> reporter: the new guidelines after dr. greg spencer traveled freely for six days before being diagnosed with ebola.

they are preparing to decontaminate his apartment on friday, officials traced his every move. the meat ball shot and the highline park and the coffee shop. and taking a train to this brooklyn bowli alley. and rushing to the hospital in the morning after waking with a 100.3 degree fever. spencer and his fiance and two friends are under quarantine as new york's mayor calling for calm. >> don't change your daily routine in any way. >> reporter: the new policy in new york and new jersey allows the states to make quarantine mandatory for 21 days for anyone returning from the affected countries, dan. >> thank you. let's bring in abc's chief medical editor, dr. richard besser. you have misgivings. but she did spike a fever, doesn't that in some way vindicate the policy? >> i don't think so. people will come back from

travel and develop illnesses. but she didn't have ebola. i think the systemas working. you see pictures of dr. spencer around town and makes people uncomfortable. but he was not contagious until after he had that fever. so the policy worked. he contacted, got in isolation before putting anyone at risk. >> we have good news on the ebola front this morning. new pictures of nina pham, the nurse from dallas. returning to her home in dallas after she got out of the hospital yesterday in d.c., before she headed back to dallas, she got a hug from president obama. it's interesting, there you see the hug -- interesting we're seeing so much success in treating ebola patients in the u.s., most surviving. however, that is not the case in africa. >> it's not. those photos were just incredible. but the world health organization announced there's now more than 10,000 cases of ebola in west africa. more than 50% of people who have that infection there have died.

we understand why here in the u.s.? we're treating the ninth patient. only one person has died, and that was late treatment. what can we learn and apply to africa? i'm worried that the quarantine rules will discourage americans from helping. we need to knock it out there. that's what makes america safer. >> and nina pham, giving the high profile hug, do you think he's trying send a message here? >> an important message. when someone recovers from ebola. they're not contagious. they're not only not contagious, but immune. there's hope that some who recovered can become future caretakers for those who have the infection. >> it's great to have your calm, steady and experienced voice throughout this coverage. we appreciate it. it's an asset to us and our viewers. we turn now to a deadly 30-mile crime spree through northern california.

two sheriff's deputies killed, another wounded and a driver is fighting for their life. it was two bonnie and clyde suspects. aditi roy has been following. >> reporter: this crime spree set off a two county manhunt. killing two sheriff's deputies. a northern california community under siege after authorities say two sheriff's deputies respond to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a motel 6 in sacramento county. >> the motive is known only to the suspect. >> reporter: the man opened fire with the rifle. one hitting 47-year-old danny oliver in the head, killing him. his partner fired back, but they fled. trying to carjack a driver. the male suspect shooting the man in the head when he refused.

critically injuring 38-year-old anthony holmes. and then a third neighborhood, carjacking this pickup truck. >> we got a credible tip that the two suspects, a male and a female were changing clothes and continuing on their way. >> reporter: but this tip came too late. racing up i-80, crossing into another county. thousands of school children on lockdown and residents on high alert. two sheriff's deputies zeroed in on the car. the male suspect opened fire, killing one of them, detective michael davis jr. a sea of law enforcement on the scene. the female taken into custody. and a two hour stand off, arresting 34-year-old march sell low marquez, hiding in a home in a quiet residential neighborhood. >> there are those who say i wish you killed him. we are not him. >> reporter: the story has yet another tragic twist.

sendoff for nathan cirillo. shot and killed at the national war memorial in wednesday's shooting rampage in ottawa. and later, the prime minister sang the national anthem before the canadian football league gamethere. and another high school has canceled its football season amid reports of hazing. this time in pennsylvania, school officials at central bucks high school west scrapped the rest of the season after allegations of humiliating pre-season rituals. the entire coaching staff has been suspended. this was after sayreville high school in new jersey canceled after sexual hazing, and the students are face criminal charges. and in new jersey, the remains in a heavily wooded area are those of hannah graham. the 18-year-old was last seen in september with jesse matthew jr. who has been charged with her abduction. they are considering upgrading the charges against matthew.

and overseas, a palestini palestinian-american teenager was killed during clashes between teenagers and israeli police. 12 people were wounded as israeli police officers fired tear gas. that 14-year-old was born in new orleans. he moved with his family to the west bank as a young child. and quite a scare for some passengers aboard a united express flight from birmingham, alabama to denver, colorado. they had to stop in missouri because of a cabin depressurization. three people were hospitalized. and game three of the world series, off to a rough start friday. a huge hole torn in the massive american flag that was unfurled. the seam between the seventh and eighth stripes, there's a total of 13,ing, of course.

>> yeah. and trouble in paradise this morning, asking for federal help in hawaii. a fast-moving red hot lava flow threatening homes. and clayton sandell has the very laters. >> reporter: this morning this red hot river of moll ten lava is lurching closer to the big island town. 10,000 people on alert. it's advanced the length of at least six football fields in the past few days. >> and that was quite alarming, before it wasn't going to do anything. >> reporter: evacuations could come within days for those in the path. thousands of others could be cut off by lava-choked roads. it's traveled 11 miles since june, now less than one mile from pahoa. there is no stopping this lava because it's on a march to the sea. thermal cameras capturing a rainbow of intense heat.

our 2014 corn maze competition. a classic and slightly immature battle of the sexes to determine who in our potly crew has the skills to make it out first. the trash talk, slightly confusing. >> there are two of us and three of you. but it doesn't matter, because two is a lot greater than three. >> then it was sometime for the stalk talk. >> we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the national anthem. we are feeling patriotic. and that's why our maze looks like this. >> the maze was shaped like the american flag. and the only way out was to get to the victory bridge. >> whatif i run just through the corn? >> that could be cheating. and. >> and then we were off. run. >> that's a dead end. >> that's a dead end. >> climb through? >> that's cheating. don't touch the corn. >> i'll admit it, no idea what we were doing. >> go the other way.
