george. this is the deadliest attack in jerusalem in years. four israelis have been killed and reports of one american as well. and tension in the city is sky high. given the fact it came in a synagogue when jewish were going to pray, it's raised fears of a religious war. just after 8:00 this morning, surrounding a synagogue after shots rang out. >> coming into the synagogue. and we heard gun shots from downstairs. we heard one shot, two shots, then a flurry of shots. at least five or six or seven shots. >> reporter: four worshippers dead at the hands of two palestinian attackers. minutes after the rampage started, the attackers, cousins from east jerusalem were shot dead by police. >> an act of pure terror and senseless brutality and murder. >> reporter: the attack comes amidst the worst tension in the city in years.

centered around the mosque on a site that's one of the holiest places in islam and judaism. palestinians accuse israelis of provocations. and they say they have been inciting religious violence, leading to deadly attacks against israelis. no floridi palestinian group cl responsibility, but hamas applauded the attack. palestinian president mahmoud abbas condemned the attack, but said israel has been inciting violence. prime minister benjamin netanyahu has vowed as he says, to respond with a heavy hand to the brutal murder of jew who is came to play. >> thank you. and freeze warnings from coast to coast. and half the country covered by snow. and ginger tracking it this morning. >> this is hung.

plunging much of the country into a virtual whiteout. 50% of the country blanketed in snow. to put it in perspective, on the average christmas day, usually only 33% of the states are covered. in grand rapids, michigan, harsh, near-zero windchills and intense lake effect snow, making it almost impossible to seat icy, dangerous roads. snow up to a foot high. in buffalo, new york, 3 inches an hour, making for a dangerous and unpredictable drive. just take a look, the winds have really picked up. whiteout conditions as we're driving. this isn't going to be easy. and look at this, icy conditions in oklahoma forcing this semitruck off the road, where it jackknifed into the barrier. the cab away from the vehicle. this balance in kentucky, rolling over multiple times. two members of the crew recovering right now. conditions just as treacherous

peaceful protests and pierre thomas is tracking it from washington. >> reporter: that's right. today the fbi is concerned that agitators will use crowds of peaceful protesters as cover to incite violence. worried about the violent pass, and with new intelligence coming in, the fbi sent a bulletin to police across the country. warning that violent individuals will likely try to exploit peaceful protests and attack law enforcement in ferguson and possibly nationwide. according to the bulletin, suspects could be armed with knives and guns and tactical gear like tear gas masks and bullet-proof vests. citing recent intelligence causing concern, including threatening messages. november 9th, an unidentified black separatist group offered a $5,000 bounty for officer wilson's location on a social media site. four days earlier, a georgia

police officer ref receives a pamphlet. and there may be cyber attacks against police, posting their personal information and shutting down computer networks. so a state of emergency declared, the national guard on stand by, and this new warning from the fbi you can see why they're planning to close schools in ferguson when the decision comes down. >> understandable. thank you. now to the desperate hunt for the isis terrorists holding an american woman hostage. the latest brutal video may offer important clues about her fate. and brian rasz has the latest. >> reporter: u.s. officials are holding out hope that isis will treat 26-year-old woman differently than peter kassig and the two other americans that were beheaded. it is significant that the latest isis video for the

shocking images does not show the young american woman being paraded in front of cameras. she was an aid worker and captured more than a year ago. because of the sensitive of the situation, her family asked we not identify her by name. but her plight is known to the parents peter kassig, ed and paula, and as they and for prayers to their murdered son, they make reference to the other hostages. >> pray for all people in syria and iraq and around the world that are held against their will. >> reporter: they ignored the plea for mercy, but they will try to forgive them. >> our hearts are battered. but they will mend. the world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. >> please allow our small family the time and privacy to mourn, cry and, yes, forgive. >> reporter: but for u.s. officials, there is no forgiveness for isis. air strikes, they say, continue

much as we thought. dr. richard besser is here. this challenges conventional wisdom. >> it's a study out of japan. people over 60 at risk for heart disease. half a low dose aspirin and half not. they found that the aspirin failed to prevent deaths from heart disease. there were fewer heart attacks, but it was offset by a significant amount of bleeding. the conclusion is for this group of people, aspirin is not worth it. >> so many of us have the doctors say take an aspirin a day, what should we do. >> anyone who's had a heart attack before, it saves lived. and another group of people at a greatly increased risk for heart disease, so don't stop your aspirin without talking to your doctor. for many people at low risk, it's not the way to go. >> and news of new benefits are for anti-statin drugs. >> these are drugs called

vitorin and zeteya. they needed extra lowering of their cles ral. and adding the drugs reduced the chances of a fatal or severe heart attack by 6%. other studies showed it lowers cholester cholesterol. >> so a double benefit. thanks very much. and amy with the other top stories. >> good morning. a terrifying scene in chicago right now. a small plane crashing right into that house overnight. the twin engine cargo plane slamming through the roof of the home shortly after taking off from midway airport around 3:00 a.m. the pilot reported engine trouble. two people inside the house were rescued. they were not injured. but the pilot's condition sun known at this hour. crews are making sure there is no gas leak. we will have more information as it becomes available.

facing attempted murder charges in connection with nine shootings even though he's not linked to the violence and has no criminal record. but they are citing a little-known state law claiming he can be charged because he benefitted from the violence. the shootings raised the gang's profile, helping him sell albums. his lawyer says it's a violence of free speech. and in norway, a driver speeding down the road with no tire. she appeared oblivious to the damage. she ran several lights before eventually being pulled over by police. and calling all daredevils, would you take a ride on this? it's called the skyscraper. it's being built in orlando and will be the world's tallest roller coaster. taking you more than 500 feet into the sky before dropping you to earth through endless

all right. we're back now at 7:40 with "gma investigates." and on the agenda this morning, used cars with potentially dangerous air bags. millions of cars have been recalled to fix exploding air bags. but will a used car dealer tell you what you need to know. we went undercover, and gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: she's a beautiful 29-year-old american hero. a lieutenant for the u.s. air force. but stephanie's biggest challenge, out of her fatigues.

in a 2002 honda civic she bought used in 2006. >> my dad liked it. it was safe and affordable. >> reporter: she was never made aware that the air bags were recalled. then in september 2013, she got into an accident. >> the air bags deployed and i had a massive strike on my right side. and i just blinded out on that side. >> reporter: this is the piece of twisted metal that she says shot out of the air bag and into her face. >> it's an air bag. supposed to protect me. >> reporter: she's suing honda and the maker of the air bag, takata. they deny responsibility. her make of car, one of 8 million subject to an air bag recall. ten auto makers in total. there's no law to stop them from selling cars, open recalls or requiring them to check for them. what are used car dealers saying about the cars for sale on their lots with potentially dangerous air bags.

"gma investigates" now take you under cover into nine used car lots in three states. about specific cars we know have open air bag recalls. only one dealer checked on the spot. some other places we visited didn't check. >> that has zero recalls. >> reporter: zero recalls. >> no recalls at all. >> reporter: and at that lot, you guessed it, an open recall. you can tell me there's not a recall? >> not a recall on this one. >> reporter: not for the air bags? >> no. >> reporter: wrong. and selling three other cars with the same air bag recall issue. we made a return visit. roberto, hi, gio benitez with abc news. you told jerry this didn't have a recall. but it does. >> it does? >> reporter: he says it's not his fault, it's the manufacture manufacturers. they should have sent a recall letter. >> we need somebody to let us know. and that person is the company.

the manufacturer. >> reporter: the problem is, letters go out at the time of the recall to the registered owner. sometimes never again. the owner of the dealership telling "gma investigates" they hadn't registered that suv, and that, quote were we are not required by law to check for recalls. we don't have time to check for open recalls. even so, roberto telling us he's going to start checking online for recalls, even taking note of the special government website to do so. all right, so you're going to write it down. safercar.gov. the department of transportation proposed a law to make it illegal to sell a car with an open recall without fixing them. >> when i think about someone buying a used car that has not been fixed after a recall has been issued, that is a real problem. >> reporter: four places we visited told us there was no recall. five said they didn't know. bottom line, it's up to the consumer to check. for "good morning america," gio
