collapsing roofs and flooding. gio benitez is outside buffalo, new york, this morning. again, this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this storm has just paralyzed some of so much of the town. this high school has been closed all week long. look at the roof, custodians are worried about that snow. it might be pretty, but, boy, is it dangerous. overnight that epic snowfall just keeps falling. western new york. residents are waking up to yet another whiteout. fall up to 4 inches per hour overnight. some areas with snow difficults over 7 feet. hundreds of cars on the side of the road. watch as a front end ladder rams right into one of them to clear the way. >> this is how they do it in but. >> reporter: and making the storms even more dangerous.

and forced to use snowplows for emergency cars. >> the rescue workers can't get to people. it's a dangerous situation. >> reporter: now the race is on to clear not just the roads, but the roofs. to prevent this, collapsing, tearing down the gas lines in its path. in new york, this nursing home forced to evacuate due to the threat of the roof caving in. that's the big concern right now. look at all of the snow. one foot of wet snow on a 1600 square foot home could weigh as much as 14 tons. even football not safe. the 220,000 tons of stadium snow forcing the buffalo bills to play this weekend's game in detroit on monday. stretching all the way to grand rapids, michigan, creating zero visibility and impossible driving conditions. over 28 inches of snow this month. last time they saw those numbers was in 1895.

1895. and back here just outside buffalo, it's not also this way. temperatures are going to warm up. ginger, a lot of people are concerned when all of this stuff melts. >> and they are going to exactly that, stight from the lake effect snow to the flood watch. thank you for being out there. the flood watch, sunday through wednesday. there's a reason. temperatures by the end of the weekend reach into the 50s. we will see a rapid snow melt. the sun angle is a little lower, that's good news. but the ingredients, 85 inches of snow, higher snow totals, and tack on rain through the weekend, warming up day by day. and the numbers are so much warmer. look at the mild weekend ahead. not just not buffalo, but here in new york city. there's a major flood concern. i think it's a slow go. but still the drains are going to be full of snow. it's going to be a mess. >> wish them well.

a lot of people welcoming the 70 and 60 degree temperatures. thanks. now to the showdown over immigration. president obama addressing the nation last months, plan that could grant 5 million undocumented immigrants legal status. republicans vowing to use every tool to fight what they call executive overreach. jonathan karl is in washington. >> reporter: good morning. the president heads to las vegas today with top democrats nancy pelosi and harry reid to hail a promise kept on immigration. in his primetime address, the president said he acted on his own because congress has failed to fix a broken immigration system. >> and so those members of congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question me acting where congress has failed, i have one answer, pass a bill. >> reporter: immigrants and their supporters wer ecstatic.

5 million people in the u.s. illegal will be eligible for temporary legal status and work permits. the biggest group, undocumented immigrants who have children who were u.s. citizens, born here. they must have been in the u.s. for more than five years. pay a fee of about $500 and have no criminal record. >> if you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. if you're a criminal, you'll be deported. if you enter the u.s. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back went up. >> reporter: the republicans are trying to undo the actions. >> it's incumbent on republicans in congress to use every single constitutional rule to rein in a president so the president does not become an unaccountable monarch. >> reporter: the president will officially set this all in motion today. but, david, it is going to talk a while to go into effect.

the first undocumented immigrants who are eligible won't begin to apply likely until the spring. >> all right, thanks. as we mentioned at the top, the first interview is in george. you can see it sunday on "this week." >> george is on his way to las vegas to be president president for the buff. and now to ferguson, missouri. two protesters arrested last night waiting for the grand jury rule. and michael brown's father is speaking out, asking for peace. steve osunsami has the story. >> reporter: overnight, protesters fought with police here in ferguson for the second night in a row. at least two people arrested. stop resisting. >> reporter: the streets starting to light up ahead of the big decision. will the grand jury charge police officer darren wilson for the shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown? and this morning, a new public

service announcement from brown's father, urging his son's supporters to respond peacefully. >> but hurting others and drying property is not the answer. no matter what the grand jury decides, i do not want my son's death to be in vain. >> the officer was darren wilson. >> reporter: we're hearing from the police chief at the center of the racially-charged firestorm. the boss, the ferguson police chief, don jackson. >> we're preparing for the worse, but we're hoping the leadership coming out to protest, if they do, is going to try to keep it peaceful. >> reporter: some of the worst fighting with police has happened here, right outside his window. the shooting death of michael brown, he says, changing the city forever. >> it's a dicey situation right now. >> reporter: despite rumors, he says he's not quitting. >> i have a mission to complete. >> reporter: what's your mission? >> i want to see the department

come through on the other side better. i want to see the community come out better, and the nation. >> the police chief here has taken a great deal of criticism in this case but made clear to me no matter the decision from the grand jury, michael brown's death will remain a tragic situation for everyone involved here, including police. >> hopefully everyone will listen to what michael brown's father had to say about peace regardless of the grand jury. possibly this weekend. and now to dan harris. >> great to see you. new security concerns at the white house overnight. just as president obama was wrapping up his immigration speech, the secret service arrested a woman carrying a holstered handgun near the north fence in a protest. this is a day after the secret service arrested a suspicion man parked near the white house with a rifle in his car. he is facing weapons charges. and breaking overnight, an

explosion own on oil rig in the gulf of mexico. one was killed, three workers hurt. no oil leak has been reported. and look at the shocking video out of northern california where this gym teacher is charged with abuse. caught on camera trying to force a 14-year-old girl into the swimming pool during p.e. class. this teenager was refusing to swim, saying she didn't want to get her hair yet. they are calling it unacceptable, saying there were other non-physical ways to discipline her. an old brick building in kansas city reduced to rubble after hit by a speeding suv. plays out on surveillance video. watch as the driver of the stolen vehicle, trying get away from police, hits the corner of the building, causing the brick wall to come down, collapsing the roof. police say she was going up to 80 miles per hour, but only suffered minor injuries. a huge upset in the until. the underdog of all underdogs

commission is launching a major campaign, warning about household and children's products in home and for sale despite the safety recalls. it's like a game of recall roulette. there are lots of recalls out there, but american families have little chance about finding about them. her parents say 2-year-old addison of utah is lucky to be alive. >> she was as close to death without dying a person can be. >> she was sitting here in the seat -- >> reporter: her father, nick, put her in a popular bumbo boother seat on the kitchen counter. >> she fell, hit this door, extremely hard and then was there on the floor screaming. >> reporter: only as they prayed for her recovery did they learn it was under official recall with a warning label because of similar incidents when used off

the floor. did you have any idea you had an unsafe product in your house? >> no. >> reporter: you never heard about it? >> no. >> reporter: an abc news investigation found a wide ranger of products that have been recalled. dehumidifiers that catch on fire. wooden chests that trap children. all under recall, but still in homes or being offered for sale. >> i liver in fear every day that have happening to my children. >> reporter: the new chairman of the product safety commission says manufacturers aren't doing enough to get the word out about recalls. in some cases as few as 5% of the recalled items are turned in or fixed. >> it can be that low. >> reporter: and 95% are unaccounted for. >> correct. >> reporter: but he's pointing a thing at craig's list that he says refuses to do what amazon

and ebay do to block the sale of dangerous recalled items. >> they will not do it to date. >> reporter: what do you say about that? >> it's morally irresponsible. >> reporter: they say they have a system to prevent the posting of recalled items. but our abc stations again and again and again were able to find and buy the recalled bumbo baby seat from craig's list. they're selling and posting items that could kill children? >> correct. >> reporter: brian ross from abc, how are you. the founder is craig numark and would not answer our questions, saying he's not involved in management. >> i have been encountered from brian ross from abc news. >> reporter: told the site is accused of being morally irresponsible, putting children's lives at risk, he walked away. we want your answers and your side of the story. isn't it possible?

weeks until christmas. get the letters into santa. and we are happy to be partnering with macy's on the annual believe campaign. helping grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. i got a chance to spend time with kids who are doing their part to make a difference. >> dear santa. >> reporter: these second graders at new york's school are asking for the things -- >> dear santa, an ipad. >> reporter: to the furry. >> a guinea pig. >> i asked for a dog. a big dog. >> reporter: to out of this world. >> to a microdrone with a camera. >> reporter: that's right, he said drone, like one of these things. whoa. who would you spy on first? >> my neighbor. >> reporter: yeah. the latetters are more than fun, and helping to grant wishes to children with life-threatening

conditions. from now to december 24th, macy's will donate up to $1 million to make a wish for every letter dropped at a box at a macy's store. and letters submit online will also count toward the donation. >> dear santa -- >> reporter: for this second grader, the macy's letter writing campaign has special meeting. two years ago his younger sister, sophia was diagnosed with lieu keep lew chemoya. >> i wish she gets better. >> now they are working with make a wish to fulfill her dream. i hear you have a wish of your own. >> swim the dolphins at hawaii. >> reporter: you want to swim with lots of dolphins? >> lots of dolphins. >> reporter: for christian and luca and all of these second

back on a friday morning. and now to two men who came together to break boundaries and defy the odds. one of the first african-american principal of beverly hills high school. now a book, "where a man stands." and macameron mathison has more >> reporter: as a kid in beverly hills, steven fenton loved baseball. so it the other in south central l.a. but that changed when carter's mom arranged enrollment for her son in mostly white beverly hills high school. >> hi to prove to everybody i belonged. >> reporter: he did. so impressive in sports that he

was hired by beverly hills high school as a coach, a teacher and a mentor for local students like steven fenton. what do you remember about steven? >> an intense, determined, passionate young kid who wanted to prove that he belonged. that reminded me of me. >> reporter: nearly 20 years later, they not only stayed friends, but steven joined the school board and convinced other members that carter should be principal of beverly hills high. >> the best thing for the school was for carter to lead it. >> in my heart i was thinking, you know, i'm not sure if the city of beverly hills would really embrace an african-american principal. but i had the determination to do it, and i knew stephen had the determination to do it. this was about turning our school around for the better. >> reporter: some parents were concerned. >> some people don't like me because i'm african-american. that's not my problem. that's their problem. >> reporter: their remarkable

story, high school buddies from different worlds, beating the odds, now a book.
