social media. tonight call it a 21st century twist on the gender wars. can modern men do anything women can? when it comes to parenting this is a different kind of divided household. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: reality star kristin cavilari known for roles on "laguna beach" and "the hills." has embraced the role of working hollywood mom. this past weekend -- >> colombia! >> reporter: she left home to judge the miss universe pageant here in miami. when she texted her hubby to check in, this was his response. need you home asap all hell has broken loose. her husband, chicago bears quarterback jay cutler, father to their two young sons, was about to be sacked. jack is in his crib. cam refuses to eat. i'm about to leave.

don't have a thousand nannies. i think a lot of people assume that we do. >> reporter: some dads are crying foul at the quarterback's fumble at home. >> i think there is a huge stereotype that still continues from the '50s that the dad needs to make the money, the mother is the only one that can be nurturing to the kids and has to stay at home with the kids. >> reporter: trevor mulligan quit his job in advertising almost five years ago to stay home with his two sons. his wife is a portfolio manager for a law firm. >> those are the rules of years ago. i think we've taken such strides and have grown so much that we kind of need to get over that. >> reporter: these three l.a. stay at home dads do everything that moms do, with pride. sam turner, who regularly hosts playdates in the the home he shares with his wife a preschoolteacher, says he would never dream of sending her an sos. >> we can be there in five seconds. if they need anything if he needs food i make him food.

if he needs his diaper changed i can do it better than my wife. >> reporter: the stereotype of the hapless mr. mom is outdated. these days you're more likely to see dad owning the stroller like this scene from "what to expect when you're expecting." most working dads are accustomed now to doing their share. tonight i'm on homework duty for my 6-year-old libby. >> this one? that's great. okay, ben, your turn. >> reporter: all the while keeping little ben busy making sure he eats. >> oh don't eat that. >> reporter: but not that. actual food. >> okay bud. balancing all this stuff -- two kids dinnertime, bath time bedtime. kind of tough sometimes. but it can be totally overwhelming, especially when you have work. >> reporter: i admit our nightly circus act cannot happen without a little help.

>> we want to add a tablespoon or two tablespoons of breast milk. >> got it. >> a little bit of banana mushed in. >> you have a lot of families where the dad is doing all the caring and nurturing. that's something we all need to recognize and accept and be happy about, to be honest. >> reporter: in today's modern family, the dads are taking on the dirty work like potty training. >> what is this filth? >> reporter: the number of stay at home dads has doubled in the last ten years. now makes up more than 16% of at-home parents. and advertisers are taking notice. >> dads alone with their babies. >> reporter: huggies pulled this commercial depicting dads as diapering dumb he's after it sparked outrage. >> how do huggies hold up to daddyhood? >> reporter: now marketers are tapping into the new super-bad demographic. >> new peanut butter cheerios are awesome.

that's why it's the official cereal of dadhood. >> reporter: cheerios targeting dads who do it all. and tide. >> since i'm the one who has to do the laundry i do what any expert dad would do. let her play sheriff. >> reporter: advertisers are recognizing there are more and more men being the primary caregivers of children. and so they're targeting these guys in ads. >> reporter: and this super bowl sunday, the biggest advertising day of the year, a tearjerker from dove. >> dad? >> reporter: arguing that the strongest men are the ones who ir kids. in fact, that's trevor and his son miles in the ad. >> i think it's to depict fathers with their kids. and the touching moments. and scary moments. and exciting moments. new moments. and be like look fathers have these special moments also. and it's important that we're part of our kids' lives in that way. >> reporter: dads know that it's these moments that make all those chaotic evenings

the church of scientology never lacks for starpower or controversy. now in a new documentary, former insiders are making some stunning claims about the secretive religion. but the church denies everything, saying it's the complainers who are out of control. here's my "nightline" coanchor dan harris. >> reporter: it's the documentary the church of ientology doesn't want you to see. an hbo film that takes a critical look at the controversial religion. including its most famous follower, tom cruise. >> you're on board or you're not on board. >> reporter: according to the documentary, the church was at one point so concerned that cruise was being drawn away from scientology by his then-wife nicole kidman that church officials strategized about ways to bring him back into the fold. the star couple eventually got divorced. and the movie doesn't stop there. the documentary called "going clear: scientology and the prison of belief" makes the explosive claim that the church

operated something called the hole. a pair of double-wise trailers in the california desert where church officials were allegedly punished for perceived misbehavior. >> the doors had bars on them, the windows had bars put on them and there was one entrance door that a security guard sat at 24 hours a day. >> welcome to the mecca of scientology. >> reporter: former scientologist official debbie cook that is testified in court that she spent time in the hole and she spoke exclusively about her experience with abc news. >> when i was there, it had bars on the windows and security guards posted at the one door for entering and exit. this is where a number of scientology executives from management level were held for varying lengths of time. >> when you're in there, can you leave? >> no you cannot. >> reporter: cook claims she was in the hole for seven weeks

during which time she says she was repeatedly made to confess her sins. >> people are screaming at you, sometimes slapping you, in some cases sometimes you're made to stand in a trash can. water's poured over you. >> that happened to you? yes. >> did you break down at all? >> i did, yeah. i did. >> reporte the church sent abc news a letter saying flat out, the hole does not exist. the church did say that cook voluntarily participated in their program of religious discipline. but that she was not taken there by force or held against her will and that her account of what went on is inaccurate and misleading. scientology officials have repeatedly dismissed cook as a bitter apostate. and that is the way they describe the other former scientologist who participated in this new hbo documentary as the usual collection of obsessive, disgruntled, former church members making up lies for money. alex gibny,

seen publicizing the film at the sundance film festival, stands by his sources. >> what's impressive me about the film was in telling the stories of these individuals that we profile, how smart, how savvy they were and yet they got inside a belief system that when they looked back when they got out, how did i get there? >> reporter: the hbo movie is by no means the first public relations challenge for the church. >> tom cruise signcientologist. >> reporter: there was this leaked video of tom cruise. >> i do what i can. and i do it the way i do everything. there's nothing partway with me. >>. >> reporter: this on-camera shouting match between a scientology spokesman and a reporter for the bbc --

>> end of the interview! >> the origins of the human race as described through the intergalactic emperor -- >> reporter: and this scene from a "nightline" interview in which that same church spokesman ripped off his mike and walked away when asked about the details of the religion's beliefs. the hbo thrill is based on the best-selling book "going clear" written by investigative reporter lawrence wright who collaborated with director alex gibny as a producer on the film. >> when i finished the book i sent him a galley hoping that he'd be interested. it would take a very courageous filmmaker and a great story teller to bring this documentary to life. >> reporter: one former scientologist, who is featured in both the book and the new movie, is mike rinder a former spokesman for and fierce defender of the church who later left and became a very public critic. >> they don't like it when anybody challenges them. because they sort of have this

mindset of look we're a religion so what we say goes and nobody can challenge it. >> reporter: both rinder and debbie cook have leveled serious allegations directly against the head of the church of scientology, david miscavage. >> one quality that has always set us apart is we are unselfish. >> reporter: he's led the church since 1986 famously close with tom cruise. >> i have never met a more competent, a more intelligent, a more tolerant a more compassionate being. we are lucky to have you, and thank you very much. >> reporter: debbie cook testified in open court that she saw miscavage punch a fellow scientology executive. >> punched him in the face? >> yes. i've never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: while she says miscavage never hit her, she testified he ordered his secretary to do so. >> and she did it. very hard.

yes. >> hard enough that you fell down? >> yes. >> why did he ask her to do this? >> he was displeased how i was answering a question. wasn't what he wanted to hear. >> did you ever think to yourself, maybe i'm in the wrong church? >> no, i never had that thought, that i was in the wrong church. i think somebody else was in the wrong church. someone else was in the wrong place i should say. this doesn't belong in church at all. >> reporter: in repeated letters to abc news scientology officials have denied that david miscavage ordered debbie cook to be slapped or that he punched a fellow executive. in fact, the church sent us a letter signed by that executive in which he said this alleged incident did not occur, and i would remember it if it had." scientology is now going after the director alex gibny, running this full-page ad in the "new york times" saying the documentary's allegations are false and comparing it to the infamous "rolling stone" article about campus rape at the university of virginia an article the magazine later

acknowledged was deeply flawed. g. bny does not seem cowed. >> i didn't expect the church to spend $250,000 denouncing the film. but it certainly brought the film to the attention of a lot of people. so i'm grateful for that. >> reporter: the early response to the preliminary has been strong. >> the audience was rapt. everyone stayed till the bitter end. asked the director and some of those who had come out a lot of questions. >> reporter: the film is set to air on march 16 sxtsd despite all the pressure from the church, hbo says it is pushing ahead. for "nightline," this is dan harris in los angeles. when we reached out a spokesperson for the church of scientology told us the allegations about tom cruise's marriage are "entirely false." and as for the alleged isolation unit the hole they had this to say. the only holes on their property are on the golf course. up next talk about a false start. godaddy already under fire for a wannabe super bowl ad.

it's the countdown to super bowl weekend. and it's go time for the patriots, the seahawks and advertisers. of course, cute animals are always a surefire way to catch our attention during the big game. tonight one commercial has already failed at making consumers fall in puppy love. >> reporter: it seems to have all the makings of a hit super bowl ad. cute puppy. heartwarming storyline. and a big emotional payoff. >> it's buddy! >> reporter: godaddy's latest ad

borrowing themes from last year's budweiser commercial which has the second-most online views of any super bowl ad. but this commercial won't actually be airing during the big game. the spot is sidelined all because of the way it ends. >> i just sold you on this website i built with godaddy. >> reporter: the coldhearts twist creating backlash on twitter. one woman writing, "hey godaddy, you have hit a new low." godaddy responding by pulling the ad and writing, "we're listening. message received." some experts though saying this would-be fumble was in godaddy's game plan the entire time. even though the company denies this was a publicity stunt. >> godaddy likely never intended the ad to be shown during super bowl night. what they hoped for was the water cooler conversation prior to the game. >> reporter: it's not the first time a godaddy ad didn't make the super bowl cut.
