the months before the heartbreaking news of her death. >> kayla has touched the heart of the world. the world grieves with us. the world mourns with us. >> reporter: kayla mueller's family says it wants these photos to be how she is remembered. released after confirmation of her death, along with a letter she wrote to her parents smuggled out last year by a hostage who had been set free. just the thought of you all, she wrote to them sends me into a fiof tears. there were lots of tears as her aunt spoke of the young idealist. >> in her letter she wrote, i have come to see there is good in every situation. sometimes we just have to look for it. and right now that's what we're all trying to do. >> reporter: with mueller's death now confirmed people involved in trying to rescue her told abc news they had been tracking a senior isis leader who had been given her as a kind

of bride or reward. >> in the past we've seen that isis has actually sold off women and young girls into the custody of their fighters on the front lines. >> reporter: the 26-year-old arizona native went to syria with a syrian boyfriend to work with war refugees. >> i am in solidarity with the syrian people. >> reporter: she described her captivity. please know that i am in a safe location completely unharmed healthy. i have been treated with the utmost respect, kindness. but mueller still had the determined spirit that had led her to syria in the first place writing "no know i am also fighting for my side in the ways i am able. i have a lot of fight left inside of me. i am not breaking down. i will not give in no matter how long it takes." the time ran out for kayla mueller. analysts at the fbi crime lab examined the photos sent to her parents and while they were able to confirm she was, in fact dead officials say there is

still no good idea about how she actually died and no confirmation of the isis claim that she was killed in an air strike last week by jordanian pilots. >> that's incredibly satd. there were rescue attempts. >> over the july 4th weekend. u.s. special forces went in and misses kayla and other hostages by just two days. more on this. president obama spoke about kayla on buzzfeed and jonathan karl brings us that. >> reporter: the president said his first reaction on learning kayla had been killed was one of heartbreak but also said that explaining to parents like those of kayla's parents why the united states will not pay ransom to get the freedom of hostages is one of the toughest things he does as president but made it clear this is a policy that cannot change. >> the reason is is that once we start doing that not only are we financing their slaughter of innocent people and

strengthening their organization but we're actually making americans even greater targets for future kidnappings. >> reporter: the but the problem, george is that the european countries have no such prohibition and routinely pay ransom to groups like isis. >> jon, it comes amid so much concern that the threat it could pose to our homeland, as well. big hearing on capitol hill where the chairman of the committee says this is the largest convergence of islamist terrorists in world history in syria and iraq. >> reporter: in stark contrast to what the president said recently in an interview released earlier he said that the terrorist threat is exaggerated by the media and he compared his job in fighting terrorism under that of a big city mayor trying to keep the crime rate down but his counterterrorism head at the fbi has some very stark testimony, stark warnings in his testimony today. he says there is a new wave of terrorism and he warns, quote, george, individuals inspired by foreign terrorist groups could covertly arming themselves with expertise and tools to carry out

an attack on the homeland. >> jon karl thanks very much. now to brian williams suspended off the air six months without pay after he made claims that a helicopter he was flying on in iraq was hit by enemy fire. abc's david wright has that story for us. >> reporter: good morning. nearly a week after brian williams apologized for falsely claiming on nbc "nightly news" that a rocket-propelled grenade struck a u.s. army helicopter he was traveling in during the iraq invasion -- >> i made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago. >> reporter: the president of nbc news overnight announced williams is out at least until august as anchor and managing editor. this was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in brian's position she wrote in a mememo to staff. as i'm sure you understand this was a very hard decision and certainly there will be those who disagree but we believe this suspension is the appropriate

littlefield at this texas gun range two years ago. >> he says that he killed two guys. they went out to a shooting range. like he's all crazy. 'he a psychotic. >> reporter: routh is pleading insanity. in court the jury of 10 women and 2 men see a young man in a suit and glasses. quite a change from his mug shot two years ago and a drastic difference from these pictures just released by a veterans group that show ralph during his service in iraq. prosecutors hope to show jurors an even more extreme picture of the defendant. in these filings obtained by abc news they're asking the judge to allow evidence they say will demonstrate routh has a history of violence and drug abuse. according to the filings the morning of the double murder prosecutors say he threatened his girlfriend with a knife. they say he was smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. months before that prosecutors allege he showed up at a family dinner and made threats to kill family members and himself and left shirtless crying and

adage you snooze you lose. researchers studying a small group of healthy men finding a significant increase in stress hormone levels after catching only two hours of sleep a night instead of a full night sleep but researchers found that after taking two 30-minute naps their hormone levels were back to where they would be after sleeping eight hours. >> most experts feel around 30 minutes, you can achieve enough sleep to wake up feeling refreshed. >> reporter: the cdc recommends adults get on average 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night but according to the national institutes of health, 40% of americans adults are sleep-deprived which is why google nasa and "the huffington post" are most those employees encouraging their employees to catch some zs in these sleep pods. >> i have seen so many people who come up to me and say, i've had like a second day given to me because i had a 20-minute nap. >> reporter: the ceo of a company that produces these pods

under fire for what some are calling their most controversial ads yet. the satellite provider's latest ad campaign featuring "sports illustrated" models chrissy teigen nina agdal and hannah davis dressed in ways we've never seen them before. as an obsessed cat lady. a cigarette-smoking lunch lady and big-haired mom who all have cable. juxtaposing them against images of the bombtheys baring their bikini bodies. so scantily clad we can't show them to you in their original form. the ads suggesting that the so-called upgraded versions of the women all came with an upgrade from cable to directv. some now saying the ads are sending the wrong message. one commenter posting online "this is shameful. we equate the shallow job of displaying one's body with success meaning we put down

women with real lives and real jobs." another saying, "once again, advertising fails women." >> people will look at that and think that's not okay. we can't demean the working class. >> reporter: others calling out reverse sexism on line one writing "so it's fine when rob lowe as the hunky piece of man meat but when it's the ladies in the same scenario it's not okay?" >> the ads can be seen as a double standard absolutely. >> reporter: drurt directv standing by their ads. >> reporter: the intention of the ads was to show a fun, tongue-in cheek example."othing to do with directv. they're gilling us into not getting it. these guys are hot and look phenomenal. if they don't get directv, they look pretty awful. >> reporter: cover model chrissy teigen telling us she sees no harm in her megahaired makeunder

>> you were a movie star remember. >> first nomination for "birdman." i was reading one interview you gave when you talked about how you could have failed miserably. >> what i lack it talent i make up for in courage or stupidity. we could have failed for all of us. i suppose especially me. >> it didn't hit me until we had already started shooting thank god. i actually play four characters in this movie. play the actor and the actor who's directing and then two characters inside the play and then we perform a play inside of it and then there's the birdman character. you forget it's a comedy and finally comedy is getting its due, i think. >> we'll brag about you. just a few of athe awards he has won for his role in "birdman." australian award for best actor, zag for the ensemble. globes nbr, london critic's circle. i mean i need to take a breath. it's been quite a score. >> and the national batting title last year.

>> did you? >> yeah. >> and that's just to name a few. more to come. you'll have to declare room on that shelf. >> and they're talking pullitzer but we'll talk about that late sfler for a book you haven't written yet. >> yes, for a book i have not written yet. >> how has it all been with each award are you sort of in the pinch me moment or just exhausted? >> both. i think i'm -- i was going to say goofy but i'm probably goofier just because exhaustion gets you to the point where you get goofier. it's really fun and ridiculously flattering. i mean i've been doing this a long time but it's -- you know i'm grateful. that's the word i keep using and i'm going to keep using it. >> you're reminding of your tremendous speech at the golden globes. i had the pleasure of being there to watch it happen. was that planned when you spoke of your siblings being one of seven and your best friend who is your son. >> it was only planned in that i thought i don't know what's g to happen after this.

there may be nothing after this so before this is all over it was something i always thought when the right day comes that you want to say that to the world. you know they know it i think but you want to say it to the world. you do a lot of editing when you're in these things and listening to what everybody is saying and you starting okay we're not going to say that not going to do this. you got to feel the room. >> feel that room. >> and will you feel the room or get prepared in the event of good news the oscars. >> i don't know -- don't you keep them like that. don't do it. >> keep them crossed. >> till whatever the date is. that sunday. >> okay. >> i'm under strict orders going to hard to play tennis. >> i'll call you every morning to be like this. what's wrong with her hands. >> when you guys were at the oscar nominee luncheon and look across the room and see emma are you just kind of like this is -- >> well yeah all of it. i've been hanging with carell a lot, steve and that's kind of the look we give each other and go. do you feel in your heart after

i am jummy olabanji. jack taylor has his eyes on the roadways for you. >> it has been one of those mornings. if you have been trying to get out the dulles, there was a vehicle fire before the parkway that at one point blocked the access road but fire and rescue pulled up to assist, maine lanes eastbound open but it is a gigantic delay on the greenway. northbound on 295 we had a crash that got moved to the left shoulder on the beltway. 270 northbound, just before 109 unfortunately not a lot of traffic moving on 270 north. you will find it at this point that the left shoulder only gets by with a serious crash into the woods. all right, it is cold, cold, cold. >> it will be ok this afternoon 40's for the afternoon, which is where we should be for the time of year. we have got an arctic cold front that will be arriving tomorrow and a couple of light showers with snow with us.
