house. what kind of lips to put on the use of ground troops in this battle. >> reporter: the president has said over and over again he is not going to start another ground war in the middle east. so even as he asked for congressional authorization for the air war now being conducted over scientists and iraq he was adamant he is not planning to send u.s. combat troops to fight isis. >> our coalition is on the offensive. isil is on the defensive and isil is going to lose. the resolution we've submitted today does not call for the deployment of u.s. ground combat forces to iraq or syria. it is not the authorization of another ground war. like afghanistan or iraq. >> reporter: but, george the resolution does leave open the possibility for a limited use of u.s. combat forces and that has some democrats very wary. >> the president trying to thread a needle between the right and left and that means this will be a real fight. could take weeks in congress.

off campus tuesday night including unc dental student deah barakat. >> i just heard gunshots. >> reporter: police say barakat, his new wife yusor and her 19-year-old cyst razan abu salha were shot inside their apartment by their neighbor 46-year-old craig stephen hicks. the girls' father telling me the three were killed execution style and that he believes they were targeted because of their faith. >> if this is not a hate crime what would be. >> reporter: hicks charged with three counts of first degree murder. police say he turned himself in hours after the killing. his wife saying the whole thing may have started because of a dispute over a parking space at the apartment complex. >> this incident had nothing to do with religion or victims' faith but, in fact was related to the long-standing parking dispute disputes. >> reporter: but hicks openly posted on facebook his proposed solution to problems in the

middle east atheism and barakat's family tells me he presently threatened deah. >> he showed him the gun. he kind of warned him of a gun. >> reporter: deah and yusor barakat just married in december. their family calling them model americans living the american dream. >> islam phobia is a real problem and hit home unfortunately, too close. >> reporter: now, investigators are calling this an isolated incident but they are looking at any clues that would point to a hate crime. the accused killer craig stephen hicks, has yet to enter a plea. george. >> okay tom, thanks very much. to amy with today's other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news a cease-fire in the standoff between russia and ukraine. russian president vladimir putin emerged from 16-hour talks with european leaders to announce a peace deal that is set to take effect sunday. it halts the fighting between ukraine's military and russian-backed rebels and calls for the withdrawal of weapons,

but many questions remain including whether the rebels will keep any territory, more than 5300 people have died in the fighting. the cruise ship captain who abandoned his ship and passengers after hitting a reef off the coast of italy sentenced to 16 years in prison for manslaughter and other charges. 32 people died when the "costa concordia" sank back in 2012 including a couple from minnesota. the captain fled unrecognized on to a lifeboat. he admits he had been showing off and steered too close to land but remains free pepping the appeals process. and retailers are asking president obama to intervene in a bitter contract dispute that is now shut down dozens of ports along the west coast until tuesday. the shutdown affecting the delivery of everything from car parts to furniture from asia could cost the economy more than $1 billion per day. well former airline executive is being sent to prison in what's become known as the nut rage case. the woman who is also the daughter of the airline's

chairman was in first class on a korean air flight from new york when she was served macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a dish. that triggered a full-blown tantrum and she forced the plane to return back to the gate. sentenced to one year behind bars for interfering with the flight crew. and now we want to take a moment to remember a broadcast colleague and a friend cbs news and "60 minutes" correspondent bob simon has died. he was killed when a black cab he was riding in crashed on manhattan's west side highway. abc's david wright looks back at simon's award-winning career. >> i'm bob simon. >> reporter: a mainstay on "60 minutes." >> are you saying you weren't the slightest bit intimidated? >> you know i was not. >> precious few people have ever seen a jaguar in the wild. >> reporter: bob simon joined cbs news during the vietnam war. >> when the north vietnamese came to the area -- >> reporter: for five decades a

incomprehensible. >> reporter: bob simon was 73. for "good morning america," david wright, abc news, new york. >> and, of course our thoughts and prayers go out to the simon family as well as our cbs colleagues this morning but it is such a loss to everyone. >> no one, no broadcast reporter had deeper broader experience across the middle east and as anderson pointed out the irony is inescapable. >> he witnessed history. we move on to the little league team that captured the nation's attention now making headlines for the wrong reasons. chicago's south side team has been stripped of its title for using ineligible players. some parents are fighting back. the kids are caught in the middle and abc's ryan smith is here with much more on that. good morning ryan. >> reporter: the kids of jackie robinson west handed a crushing loss with their title stripped. both parents and kids are speaking out asking why the children are being punished for the actions of adults. >> chicago wins the united states championship.

>> reporter: jackie robinson west the south side chicago team that played their hears out to win the american little league baseball title this morning heartbroken. their title stripped. >> we worked hard all year long. we didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: after little league international ruled wednesday their manager and other administrators stacked their team with all-star ringers from other league districts creating a super team. >> we had to do this. we had no choice. >> we know we're champions. our parents know we're champions and the parentchicago knows we're champions. >> reporter: some parents fighting back claiming the title should remain theirs and this mom wondering if race was a factor. >> it is amazing to me that whenever african-americans exceed the expectations -- >> right. >> -- that there is always going to be fought. >> reporter: the boys of jackie robinson west one of the feel-good stories of last summer

this morning after his run-in with the wrong mom. we show you that high-speed chase ending with a big crash and the victims jumping out of the minivan to take the suspect down and brandi hitt has more. >> reporter: watch this dramatic police chase through the streets of dallas. the whole thing caught on camera. police say 43-year-old alexander robbed a store and carjacked this white dodge challenger wednesday before leading cops on a high-speed eight-mile pursuit. the chase ending at this intersection. >> just wrecked at the intersection. >> reporter: but it's what happens next that needs to be seen to be believed. the woman behind the wheel of the minivan jessica leastman gets out and confronts alexander. followed by her boyfriend, charles cook in the passenger seat. >> i would use to stop whoever, whether it was him or somebody else it's no thinking just a reaction. >> reporter: when alexander tries to make a run a scuffle ensues. liesman grabbing the straps of

n the witness stand. who were you married to asked the prosecutor. she broke down whispering chris kyle. >> i need you here. >> reporter: millions have watched the kyles' love story in the blockbuster "american sniper" but wednesday kyle told her story to the 12 people who matter the most the jurors who will decide whether eddie routh is guilty of murdering chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield at this gun range two years ago. the judge will not allow audio from witnesses to be broadcast but you don't need to hear her to see her pain. she clutched dog tags as she walked jurors through family pictures. she also talked about the last day she saw him. we said we loved each other and gave each other a kiss and a hug like we always did. as kyle left the stand she hugged chad littlefield's mother who told the jury it would have been her son's 38th birthday. >> he did not know what he was doing was wrong. >> reporter: ralph sat with his

atlanta. nancy, the prosecution beginning with the most powerful punch possible. >> absolutely by bringing on the wife taya the jury gets to know the victim in this case and that's very rare. you can search the constitution. it mentions nothing about the crime victim. this is the only way the jury gets to know to see, to feel the victim and in this case that's extremely important and what they're going to learn about the defendant in this case routh, is that he used the claim of ptsd so many times to get out of trouble, even to get out of a dui. he would use this claim of ptsd. >> and, dan, ptsd not the same as insanity. >> that's right. ptsd is not enough to say i shouldn't be held responsible for my actions. it has to be my ptsd was so bad that i didn't understand right from wrong. but, look in this case this is a comparatively good insanity claim and what i mean by that is

the insanity defense is always tough -- >> emphasis on comparatively. >> hang on one sec. it's really tough in a state like texas, it's really hard to win an insanity defense but they have evidence here of not just mental illness, but of comments he made afterwards that may suggest that he didn't understand what he did was so terrible. that's the important thing in this case and to have the victim himself having said this dude is straight up nuts shall that's not a legal or medical assessment but is sure helpful to the defense. >> you're not buying it nancy. >> this is what i think about that. what they're going to do is bring in surveillance video from the local taco bell that shows that right after gunning these two men down in cold blood, shooting them in the back in the back of the head he takes their car, their black pickup truck, drives it through taco bell and enjoys a burrito. he's not in the middle of

we begin with the big news overnight that there are three winning tickets for last night's $564 million powerball jackpot. they were sold in texas. north carolina and puerto rico. the jackpot is the fifth largest in u.s. history and if the winners choose the lump sum option they will each get more than $127 million before taxes. overseas right now, a cease-fire in the standoff with russia. president putin agreed today to a deal that will stop the fighting between pro-russian rebels and ukraine's military that takes effect sunday but many details still need to be negotiated. cbs news correspondent bob simon died last night in a car crash here in new york city. simon was in the backseat of a car when it struck another vehicle and spun out of control. simon covered nearly every world conflict since the 1960s. he was even held captive in iraq for more than a month. bob simon was 73. well commuters in northern california are being warned they

country thing, it's actually about as american of a story as you can possibly get. it's about men and women who will work the hardest jobs in all conditions just to make their life better for their children and what happens is this coach comes into this town and he gives these young men an idea that they can be something that they never thought possible because the only thing growing in that community is the prison and what happens, they succeed beyond their wildest expectations. >> they sure did and there's one scene where you, your character, jim white, gets out in the field under that hot sun and is picking cabbages. what was -- number one, i'm assuming it was very important to show that and to actually get in there and to live it. >> it was important at -- he to -- that he was a fish out of water and somehow he had to immerse himself in the culture and the only way you can begin to even understand because these -- it wasn't just their parents pigging it was these kids pick before they go to school and they pick when it's over. and a lot of us don't really

know how the food is getting on our plate but it's these people that do this and so he did at one point his team was falling apart and he decided i will go pick with you. i will be with you and to this day that man is still in that community, jim white. >> it is a real feel-good story. it's a wonderful story and there's a wonderful scene at the end. i don't want to give it away where you get a glimpse of the real characters. >> yeah and i think that's nice. there's all kind of stories we can tell out there and sometimes we tell you know the romantic comedy whatever you want to say to these big movies but sometimes we get to see a person's life in america in a place you're not often privy to into. >> you're a busy guy. i know that you're also very proud of another film. >> "black or white" is something that's been out for two weeks and people are finding that movie and i appreciate everyone who is going and has been -- and talking about it. >> yeah people are talking about it and i know that they
