floods there. after nearly a foot of rain. the big story this morning? thousands of flights canceled and delayed by snow and ice. it's forcing some, look at this, to stake drastic measures and sleep at dallas-ft. worth airport overnight. that's where we find gloria riviera this morning. good morning, gloria. >> reporter: good morning, paula. that's right. over the weekend, 5,000 people forced to sleep -- try anyway -- here at dallas-ft. worth. this morning, many of them now back here trying to get out to get on a plane. one man told me his flight canceled last night. he's now confirmed on another one. it doesn't leave until tuesday. this morning, working the backlog is the new nightmare. overnight, thousands of travelers trapped again. >> i -- it's just mind-boggling. >> reporter: winter weather causing nearly 3,000 flight delays across the country. here in dallas, more than 1,000 cancellations. leaving some here for their second day of torment.

>> we had to get the plane deiced. we were in line to get ready to do it. it took 20 minutes. we became plane number seven, plane number ten. now where are we going to go? >> reporter: dallas-ft. worth says for the passengers without hotel rooms, it will provide cots blankets and toiletries to people stuck inside. and this guide with food, news stands, and for those who have truly had enough, something stronger than coffee. >> i doubt we'll get out today either. >> cow can't tell the snow what to do, can you? >> reporter: far better conditions than more than 200 people had onboard american airlines flight from dallas to oklahoma city. the trip turned into a nightmare. nine hours of delays. stuck on the plane, and then in the terminal the entire time. >> people were really frustrated. it seemed to be no crew around there for a little bit. people going into the liquor fridge. pulling out what they wanted to drink. it got a little chaotic. there for a little bit. >> reporter: overnight, american airlines issuing a second

apology to those on board, writing -- we wish we could have done even more to overcome the severe conditions we all faced. we remain committed to operating safely and reliably. for good measure, adding in 25,000 bonus miles. one traveler told me that the airline called him last night. they said we've got you on plane that leafs at 6:30 in the morning. when he got to the airport, the lines at check-in were so long, he missed it. the weather is supposed to improve. a bit of good news. dan? paula? >> thank you. maybe getting better where you are. the nasty weather is heading up into the northeast. yet again, new england is in the cross harris. look at this. the collapsed roof of a skating rink. across the country today, tens of millions of people will be affected by lots of storms. rob is tracking it from atlanta. they've had a truly incredible week of weather. good morning to you. >> good morning, dan. this week, the past couple of weeks, have been very active across atlanta, northern georgia.

now, another storm cutting a wide swath of winter weather cutting across the entire u.s. this morning, unsettled weather impacting millions of americans from coast to coast. pushing some cities already inundated to the brink. 11 inches of water in south florida in just six hours. >> i didn't think it was that deep. and by the time i realized, it was really deep. >> reporter: knee-high waters bringing the city of miami to a halt. new england could get up to eight inches of snow by this evening, a region that cannot take any more. saturday morning, this skating rink roof in massachusetts caved in, becoming the latest in a string of collapses as a youth hockey team was on the ice. >> when i was on the ice, all you could hear was big noises like banging and everything. >> reporter: this missouri interstate turning into a skating rink overnight. an out-of-control greyhound bus setting off a 30-car pileup. 40 people taken to the hospital. rare ice and snow this week sending doing going drivers into

spinouts and ditches. downing trees across the state. veteran m meteorologist glen burns at atlanta wsb says the pattern of storms this week is unheard of. these back to back to back storms have you ever experienced that? >> i've never seen that in my life. we have seen some big storms that have shut the city down at times. but back to back to back has been unprecedented. >> reporter: georgia getting hammered with rain, snow, ice in less than two weeks. >> in the last ten days we have had three winter storms here. the second one was a bear because it produced a ton of ice. >> reporter: 33 years glen burns has been working in the atlanta market. and his team of meteorologists at wsb have been very very busy, especially this past couple of weeks. winter, there are freezing rain advisories for northern georgia. i think atlanta will be spared the worst of this. look at the advisories. really coast to coast. winter storm warnings for much of missouri, indiana, illinois,

ohio. now jersey, philadelphia, you'll probably see some icing later on today. southeastern parts of boston. here comes the snow. we have already seen 6 inches of it in st. louis. we'll see from 4 to 8 inches in some spots. as it continues to push across the north and east. good news is tomorrow across much of the area things should creep a little bit above the freezing mark. but, it's march 1st, guys. we're still in the throngs of winter. back to you. >> spring can't come soon enough. rob, great to see you in atlanta this morning. we'll check in with you a little bit later. next to the international manhunt for the world's most wanted terrorist. the big question, are we any bigger to bringing jihadi john, the masked executioner to justice justice? our chief investigative correspondent brian ross is in london with the very latest on the manhunt. brian? >> reporter: well, good morning, paula. now that the name of mohammad

emwazi has been made public, the search has intensified. authorities tried to keep his name secret in hopes that he might give away his location by contacting family or friends in london. that never happened. authorities say he practiced incredibly good operational security, no indication of him using phones. almost as if he has scrubbed his name from social media sites. as best it's known now, he's somewhere in syria and he's still alive. >> you're learning more about mohammad emwazi's days in schools, childhood, reported obsession with violent video games. >> reporter: that's right. at the age of 11, teachers at his school already detected what they called a violent streak. so much so they put him in anger management therapy. he told his teachers he liked violent video games including one called duke nukem, a time to kill. by the time he was in his late teens, he had joined a group of young men, called the london boys, the north london boys, who

were extremist, islamist, and some of them preceded him in going off to fight in terror groups in syria and somalia. he joined up two years later at the age of 23, 24. he went off to syria and became part of isis, carrying out, presiding over these brutal executions of three americans and at least four others. today, he's very much a wanted man. one of the most reviled and perhaps the most wanted man in the world, paula. >> the pieces beginning to assemble. so many wondering how much longer he can hide since all of the executions have been in the open. brian ross in london for us this morning, thank you, brian. >> one of the most wanted men in the world. and abc's martha raddatz is just back from the syrian border not far from where jihadi john is supposedly hiding. she joins us from istanbul, turkey. what are the odds of finding this guy? >> reporter: well, the real problem, dan, is we don't really have any intelligence assets on

the ground in syria. nothing. we have the drones. we have the reconnaissance aircraft. we have surveillance. as brian said, jihadi john practices operational security. he doesn't use a cell phone. he doesn't use a satellite phone. unless you get somebody infiltrating, it will be hard to find him. on the other hand officials i have talked to say, eventually, we'll find him. i don't know how. they seem somewhat optimistic that eventually they'll find him. >> let me ask a bigger picture question. you have just been to the syrian border. near the town of kobani. where a major battle was fought with isis. what did you conclude about how difficult it will be to take this group on and perhaps take them down militarily? >> reporter: it's quite stunning. you look over the border and you can see kobani. there's so much destruction. you think, they took it back from isis. yet it's a small town.

the u.s.-led coalition carried out 750 air strikes on that town. and plus in the process, they displaced the entire town. we were in refugee camps. we saw almost the entire population of kobani living there in refugee camps. they won't be going back for a very, very long time, if at all. you think about trying to take back a town like mosul, about 33 times as large, that is a very, very tough fight. >> mosul, the second largest city in iraq. it is not going to be clean or easy. martha, thank you. martha has an exclusive interview with john kerry coming up. we begin with the texas nurse infected with the ebola virus reportedly planning to sue the hospital where she worked. she'll file a claim on monday seeking unspecified monetary damages. pham says she suffered from nightmares body aches, and insomnia after treating thomas eric duncan the first person in the u.s. diagnosed with ebola. pham says the hospital was negligent. and the city of cleveland says the death of a 12-year-old boy, tamir rice, who was by police while brandishing a pelt gun, is the boy's fault. the city is denying any wrong doing. city officials say the pain and suffering by the family quote we -- were directly and

caused by their own acts not the dendant, referring to the police officer. the boy was holding a fake gun when he was shot. new images of the three schoolgirls believed to be headed to syria to join isis. these images show them at a bus stop in turkey. the same they they flew out of london. according to the bbc, the girls waited until the next day and took a bus to a syrian border town before being driven to a border crossing point by human smugglers. scotland yard officials believe the girls are now in syria. on their way to join the terror group. thousands of people in moscow are expected to cross a bridge where boris nemtsov was killed. the march originally planned by nemtsov was originally supposed to be a pro test against vladimir putin. nemtsov was killed near the area

illegal street drag race. a mustang careening out of control and plowing directly into the crowd watching. two people died. this morning, police in los angeles are hunting for one of the drivers. kendis gibson is on the case. >> reporter: this video, obtained by our affiliate, kabc, allegedly showing an illegal street race between a gray mustang and another vehicle. the mustang spiraling out of control into a crowd of 60 onlookers. according to police this is the man behind the wield, 21-year-old henry gevorgyan. this morning, he turned himself in for questions about why he allege lid ran off from the scene of thursday's accident. leaving two dead onlookers and another severely injured. >> we have information that there were people there who stayed to help the injured parties. >> reporter: the other driver involved, still unidentified and on the loose. >> our investigators are pursuing leads to identify who that person is. we would like to speak with them and help determine what happened out here this morning. >> reporter: neighbors describing the scene as all too common.

>> two cars in this lane, where all those marx are. that's where they start. they shoot all the way down, blowing through the stop sign. >> reporter: police say the mustang had been modified to race. and the tire marx indicate that gevorgyan accelerated quickly and possibly lost control while shifting gear. >> street racing is glamorized. shown as entertainment. this is criminal. dangerous. unfortunately this morning, we see that it's deadly. >> reporter: california, no stranger to street sideshows. like this one earlier this year in oakland. where drivers shut down major highways to show off. this morning, police charging gevorgyan with murder as the second suspect is still at large. and the other victim in critical condition this morning in the hospital. but is expected to survive. police say there were dozens of witnesses to this drag racing. they think it won't be long before the second driver is captured. paula? dan?

temperatures in the 30s here. out west, a storm for so cal. they'll take the rain. but it comes with some problems. there will be a threat for mudslides today. gusty winds in the mountains yesterday. over 60 miles an hour. that will be an issue today, too. some of the thunderstorms could be on the severe side. 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. heavier around the phoenix area. we could see some flooding there also. going to see a little bit of a bump in the jet stream. the pattern shift instigated by what is going on out west. that's good. 2459 means we'll finally get into some milder air as we go through the next couple of days. into the 50s across the south. and even though we're seeing the winter weather across the ohio river valley, things will warm up a little bit. icy today. icy tomorrow morning. a bump in the temperatures tomorrow afternoon. the morning commute will be bad news for many. things will improve thro

>> he gets pretty malicious and vindictive. he's a mean person. >> reporter: duking it out on the national television with the father of her twins, who is now the primary suspect in her disappearance. >> mr. smith, do you have anything to say about this? >> reporter: this week, the police revisiting this wooded area. located between two key sites in the investigation. dale smith's home, where parker was last seen dropping off their toddlers. and the body of water where her cell phone was found over two weeks later. search teams spending hours combing the dense, wooded area not far from the orlando airport. a 2011 search by cadaver dogs came up empty. and so did this one. >> it's agony not knowing what happened to your child. they thought we should maybe go back and take a look at these woods. >> reporter: parker's mother said search teams were looking for this decal. it was missing from her humvee when found days later in a park lot across town. >> i want to find michelle alive. not dead. >> reporter: while parker's loved ones remain optimistic, smith has never been charged in relation to her disappearance.
