jummy: the police chief's briefing us. let's listen in. >> so farther is no report of any injuries. they took control the weapons and fled the hospital, dressed in a hospital gown, allegedly with snow shoes on. at this moment the hospital and surrounding areas are on lockdown while the fairfax county police department have been assisted by the virginia state police and a multitude of federal agencies inducting a federal building by building search and a search of the entire radius of the hospital.

the building. we are locking down the entire area presuming that he did escape while we are searching. >> we had information about a girl who was possibly seen. do you know anything about that? >> at this time the federal authorities are making connections with his girlfriend and family members to make sure that he did not escape through their assistance. >> was he a local person? >> i don't have the specific address at this time. >> are you looking for the girlfriend as well? >> we are looking for all of his friends and relatives. >> is there a lookout for this individual? >> the girlfriend? right now the officers have the information. we have supplied the media with a photo. we ask that anybody in the community that sees mr. wossen assaye or anyone suspicious in a

handcuffed. >> what is protocol when you are transporting an inmate to the hospital? colonel roessler: i can only street to the protocol the fairfax county police department, which is that the prisoner would be handcuffed at all times, either secured to the bed or behind their backs. i cannot speak on the federal authorities on this matter. >> this is unusual, in your experience? colonel roessler: four fairfax county would be unusual to have an unsecured prisoner. >> is it looking like he's in the hospital? >> we don't know if he's in the building or has fled the area. we are going through each building methodically. >> how worried should residents be that he could be hiding out or trying to get into their

homes? >> we all need to be concerned, the information that we have right now is that he is an armed felon attempting to flee. we need everybody secure, in place, reporting any's -- any suspicious activity. >> had he just arrived? what was the timeline? colonel roessler: i don't have a precise timeline the event unfolded just after 3:00 this morning. >> suicide attempt? colonel roessler: i have not confirmed that. i know that he tried to harm himself. >> is there any consideration at all, this is a big hospital, did you have any consideration of keeping people out? colonel roessler: the hospital has elaborate security protocols and a good network. arrangements have been made for shift changes. it is a very secure model with the security staff.

>> do you know when the guy got out of prison? colonel roessler: out of alexandria city jail? i don't have that information right now. >> staff can go there, but noted patients? colonel roessler: this is lieutenant brooke right. lieutenant: the staff is been asked to go to falls church high school and they will be shuttled from there. the hospital is no longer on lockdown -- at this time they are not accepting new patients. i don't know what is plan for any surgeries or procedures today but at this time they do not want new patients to report for treatment. they are diverting to other emergency rooms at this point. >> have you been searching nearby houses?

colonel roessler: we have officers authorities, and teams going through all the neighborhoods to methodicallyvery area. they are knocking on doors. right now they're looking for the suspect and, as you mentioned, doing reverse 911. >> let's go back to the vehicle in the girlfriend. was there a car near by him a hospital? colonel roessler: i have no information to support that at this time. >> i arrived late, can we go back to the beginning? we are concerned, tracking them down.

colonel roessler: we were attempting to make contact. >> is their vehicle you are looking for? colonel roessler: not at this time. the rumor about the vehicle is probably related to the bank robbery, that vehicle was impounded as part of the bank robbery a while ago. i have no information about a vehicle specifically being involved. >> you still think he has the gun? colonel roessler: correct. >> and you think you is still in a hospital gown? colonel roessler: unless he picked up close somewhere. >> do you know where he was at the time? colonel roessler: it did happen in a room that he was being held in and he fled out of the room. >> is that in the general population where other patients were being held?

colonel roessler: it is a secure floor, from my understanding, but other patients were being held them that floor. it is a large facility with a lot of spaces, we are again methodically going through the building that he was in and every other building, doing secondary sweeps we will go in and do a third effort out in the community. >> talk about the challenge, and lots of notes and crannies everywhere. colonel roessler: exactly, we will go through every single building, every single room, every new and cranny to assure the hospital community that it's safe and to assure the surrounding community. >> surrounding communities people are not necessarily being

guards that were responsible for him and they are now conducting a building by building search for him he is believed to be armed and dangerous and was able to overpower an officer and is still believed to be in a hospital gown at this time. at this time the surrounding area is still on lockdown. police are asking everyone to stay inside their homes if they are in those surrounding neighborhoods and are urging more -- all employees to head to falls church high school, where you can pick up a shuttle bus and be taken to a campus because you are not allowed to drive on there as they continue to search. the colonel pointed out the fact that they are not sure if he is still in the hospital or in the neighborhood, they are conducting a building by building search that is expected to take several hours. jummy: checking in with his family as well, he has family

mike: the live scene behind me is still a blockade of fairfax county police officers and many other agencies here at the half will as well including a swat team and a tactical team virginia state police and metro transit police were here earlier . we can tell you what we just learned earlier, this all happened a little after 3 a.m. and we were told that there were two guards involved in this, two guards hired to watch over this inmate on a room in the secure floor of the hospital. the man in custody, we know that at least one of them had a struggle with him and the man was not handcuffed, he somehow managed to grab the security officers gun. one shot was fired, no one was injured, suspects fled on foot. we are told that he came here to the hospital for medical treatment apparently attempting to harm himself. the sheriff's office said that

he was taken to the hospital by sheriff's deputies on friday they stayed watch until saturday when this private security firm took over. we were told the two guards were involved and at least one of them was overpowered by the man. we can also tell you that he was described as a black male, six feet tall, 170 pounds, wearing a hospital gown with no shoes. keep in mind that it is a very cold morning to escape with very little clothing. he is described as armed and dangerous. residents have been urged to stay inside with their doors locked. police released this image of the suspects girlfriend, telling us that the girlfriend is in the area and they are seeking to reach out to them and see if they had any involvement or knowledge of this incident. also, multiple long as agencies are on the scene, searching for this man, going room by room on this huge campus, eating a very close eye on the area. multiple roads are closed

on federal charges for armed bank robbery. we are told by the sheriff's office that wossen assaye was taken to the hospital on friday, they stayed watch over him until saturday and went private security took over we are told that he was brought here for medical treatment due to attempting to harm himself and were told that he was not handcuffed at the time of the incident this morning but that he somehow managed to overpower at least one of the guards. one shot was fired, no one was injured in the incident and the suspects fled on foot. neighborhoods around the area have been told to stay inside take precautions that the man is armed and dangerous, last described wearing a hospital gown with no shoes. again, the stolen vehicle is

is a meticulous situation. you heard the police chief say this morning that they are moving methodically not only through the grounds of the hospital and the campus, but also to the neighborhoods. that is what we have seen here.this is an apartment community literally right next to inova fairfax hospital. we have been seeing eagle one, the u.s. part police chopper flying up all morning long. as a told you earlier, we can tell you that police officer's, the cruisers here, they took off at a high rate of speed about 10 to 15 minutes ago. we now know that they were in pursuit of that pickup truck and are now telling us that it was not in any way related to the situation with the inmate so the search continues right now, this man considered armed and dangerous, many of the residents have been told all morning long as they continue to leave for

work that if they are going to be heading back to their homes in the next couple of hours or so that they should stay indoors , to lock their doors and not be outside. we have seen a number of folks walking their dogs, becoming aware of what was going on, they ran back into their homes. police have made it very clear not only to the neighborhood but to us that they do not know exactly what they are dealing with right now with this man. he is obviously armed and dangerous, he made that clear this morning with the incident at the hospital, overpowering the security guard. a very fluid situation. police are moving methodically as they have been saying all morning long. and now the news detail with that stolen vehicle, perhaps being driven by this inmate it's still unclear. there's just a lot of moving pieces and it makes the situation easier for police your

folks can, quite frankly, stay out of the way, which is why they are asking the folks to stay indoors, for their safety so that they can continue with this intense operation. autria: we know that the lockdown has been lifted but they are urging people to stay inside their homes as they continue to hunt for this escaped prisoner. it's believed that the carjacking took place at around 7:00 this morning in the springfield area. that is where jeanette reyes picks up the story now with more on what we know about the carjacking. jeanette: things have quieted down a bit here, but it is just incredible, to hear what happened. take a live look behind me, you can see the car with damage on the sides, that is where the carjacking ended as far as the woman, the owner of the car, i just spoke to the owner and he said he heard the crash and he ran out and saw a woman running away screaming bloody murder.

that is the woman who was contacted by the inmate. according to him it sounds like the inmate was in the backseat as she jumped out. that homeowner actually went after the escaped inmate, not knowing who he was going after he was unable to track them down. the car was so bad the damage that eventually the car would break down. it did not and he was unable to track him down. when he got home his son told him not to chase down the person, they are escaped inmate. he is armed and dangerous. police have closed down the area you can see they have crime tape around the area as part of the investigation. one lane off of backlick road is also shut down as police collect as much evidence as they can right now. no one has been hurt at this

this is incredible that this would lead to your front door. what happened? what did you see? preston: i heard a screech, it's not uncommon here, this is a bad corner. then i heard a siren quickly and then i heard a bad crash. then i heard a woman screaming. she was screaming in such a way that i had no idea that she was . i saw the door open and i thought that maybe she was going to fall out. as a turned to come out of the house to help i grabbed my keys and by the time i grabbed mike ease the car took off of the hill at a high rate of speed. i'm like -- i can't believe it. they are going to leave the scene? >> he took some action to chase after the car? preston: i knew that that car could not make it far, i thought. i thought that if i could find the car and at least call the police because you never know,

if someone is crazy enough to hit your car and drive away there could be some bad things with that person. i made it all the way to the home depot on 236 in my son called and said that -- get back, don't chase that car anymore, this could have something to do with an escapee from the hospital. jeanette: what is going to your mind when you think that this might be part of a hit and run? preston: that thank gosh this was not my wife's car, i would have come out to help, and here with this guy have been armed with a gun. i've lived here my whole life. i have seen everything and heard everything. that was really it. i'm just glad, he could have come in the house. we could all be in their sausages right now. jeanette: we are so happy you are doing ok. the story continues. there is a manhunt underway. you heard him say that he was

not able to get a hold of the inmate and thank god that he did not. this developing story has been going on since the wee hours of the morning and we will have the latest details as soon as we can. jummy: can u.s. preston if he was able to speak with the woman when she got out of the car and what she had to say? jeanette: they want to know if you were able to talk to the woman when she got out of the car. preston: i actually never saw the woman. i saw the door open and that is when i read my keys. evidently some of the workers appear had seen her running around the corner trying to get away from the car. at that point that is when i saw the door actually kind of closing and then turning. jeanette: your son described it as screaming bloody murder. preston: i really thought that someone was hurt had.

jeanette: how fast was he going up the hill? it's a 25 mile per hour and he was going 50 at least. that car was not in good shape. i could not believe that the car drove away from the scene. i could see the driver's side and it was just toasted all the way down. jeanette: you consume into his car. his car, his wife's car, ladies is in pretty bad shape. you can only imagine the woman's car that ran off not being in good shape, and this man was able to still be on the run after such a serious crash. the good news is, though, that no one was hurt, he didn't enter your home and you did not get a hold of him, that is mind blowing. preston: you never think about chasing someone. not for the wrong reasons, but you just don't think.

autria: we are staying on top of the breaking news that we have been following all morning long, the manhunt at the fairfax hospital considered armed and dangerous right now, mike conneen is live for us in fall -- falls church. mica: we had officers with high-powered rifleoutside this morning, but now it's a very different scene with the traffic coming through on gallows road, we can tell you the right now the police of put out an alert for a vehicle that they believe that this man may be driving right now, a 2002 toyota silver camry, virginia plate xzp-8153.

they also say that that vehicle has front-end damage. wossen assaye is described as a black man, six feet tall, last seen wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. we are told that sometime after 3 a.m. while under the watch of two private security guards in the room on a secure floor here at the hospital he somehow overpowered at least one of those guard, was not handcuffed at the time, we are told that one shot was fired, no one was injured and the suspect fled with the gun of one of the officers. we have learned new details from the sheriff's office officials that he was brought here for medical treatment for injuries after attempting to take his own life that he was booked into the detention center on the 21st of march and this past friday the 27th he was brought here to the hospital for the medical care. shares deputies watched over him

believe me i'll milk it when it comes to doing chores at home but even my wife will say the garbage isn't going to walk itself out there so i tell people with the disease or any kind of malady life is as john kennedy said once is unfair but you just have to deal. >> what are the special challenges trying to do live television when you're deing with ms? >> i think my purchases could tell you they'll know something is wrong when i can't see or having trouble looking at the prompter. now, you don't need prompter but those days that i do i try to prememorize the script or try to remember the guests. sometimes it's very difficult to see the person right in front of me. it just depends on the day. it's a disease that manifests itself >> that's the thing. soh ms have to be in such tune with their bodies so they can feel the signs coming on. >> i think that's what's it. i think -- i had cancer prior to this and as awful as that was, george there was an end game with the chemotherapy and

radiation succeeding but with ms it's not so easy and as it progresses and mine is progressing, you never know how it will hit. i think the biggest adjustment i had when i first got diagnosed was understanding a limb that would go out and compensating with the other limb an eye that goes out, compensate with the other. both eyes go out, just feel words. i think it gets bizarre but you read your body after a while and you realize that hey, look we can do this. >> i know -- i remember robin talking to ann romney who, of course is dealing with ms as well and how she handled it during the campaign and you teamed up with her in her ann romney neurological center. >> she asked when she was coming up with this idea and i wanted to run it by the higher-ups at fox but to host with a lot of neurological ailments like parkinson's, lou gehrig's disease, multiple sclerosis and she was trying to find a common theme for this but it's a board

that is -- which you tart with breaded chicken. i salt and pepper each side which i'll pretend i did but you don't have to even -- you can skip this step -- i've tried it when trying to drop a few pounds i don't even bread it. just sear the chicken. >> but still the skinless like that is a real go-to protein. >> i do use a lot of chicken and i like -- i love chicken which is good and i really do love it simply prepared. i like it -- i do an unfried chicken that i bake in the oven. >> i've seen that. >> so that's the simple part of that and then once you've seared the chicken your pot is going to look like this then you're basically just kind of making a really light gravy basically that goes in it and i use a shallot which is a fancy word for onion. >> exactly. >> garlic. >> you're so fancy. >> of course a little garlic. this is white wine vinegar. >> mm-mm. >> and some chicken stock. you could use vegetable tock if you prefer. >> yum.

jeanette: we have been talking to for the past hour about the carjacking that ended not too far from here, back near cindy lane. we were talking to a man named bill kim, who was talking to a woman who is carjacked, telling me that she was absolutely hysterical. bill: i opened up at around 6:35 and about 35 minutes later she came running in, saying someone help me, please call 911. she was hyperventilating. i try to figure out what her emergency was just gone down, tell me your emergency. she told me that someone popped up from the back seat of her car and scared her and then she ran her car into a parked car on cindy lane. jeanette: you were telling me that she was a nurse at the hospital. she got into her car in the driveway and did not notice anything out of the ordinary and you were able to put two and two together.

>> correct. i asked her with direction are you coming from and she said the nearby fairfax hospital. she told me that she was backing up her car ended not see like anyone in the mirror and as she was coming down here, someone popped up and scared her. from what i could make of it she was on her way to work. jeanette: thank you so much. build. ladies, that was just one of the terrifying moments. they described the screams as bloody murder knowing that something was wrong, never imagining that she was in the same car as this man that people -- the police are looking for. armed and dangerous is what they are considering him. that woman, there were no visible injuries that she was understandably shaken by all of this.
