perez on the ground in fairdale, illinois, alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning dan. good morning, paul lachl the cleanup and recovery process here just beginning. overnight it was heavy hail and rain creating big problems across parts of the south. in ash land kentucky, it uprooted trees including this one striking josh howard's church van. >> oh, my god! . >> reporter: he records the terrifying moments as hail pours through the broken windows. look at how it crushed the entire roof of the van. in georgia thousands without power as crews scramble to clear downed trees and fix snapped power lines. the severe weather pattern continuing after striking in illinois. this morning new images of the devastation caused by tornadoes that killed two and injured at least 20 people. in rochelle, the powerful winds of a tornado leaving these

massive concentric marks across the field. in fairdale, not a single home was untouched and many leveled as winds up to 200 miles per hour tore through this small town. our chicago station wls took me up in their chopper for a bird's-eye view of the damage. from above you can get a better idea of just how damaging this storm was. entire blocks completely gone. people's lives, their belongings scattered all over the place. and now coming home to find that they've lost everything. this google earth image shows the town before the ef-4 tornado struck and after. the path of the tornado marked by the trail of destruction. and utility crews have been working through the night here as homeowners begin the difficult process of assessing the damage. paula. >> alex, those images were just so powerful thank you. the weather is on the move and rob tracking it for us. you were saying for illinois unusually strong for this time of year. >> yeah, this is severe weather

season paula but it's been 34 years since we saw an ef-4 strike the state of illinois so unusually strong for the state of illinois this time of year. an ef-4 anywhere is a rarity and this one certainly a destructive one. resetting. moisture in the air, strong jet stream energy that will pour into the plains high plains the oklahoma panhandle, northern parts of texas into western kansas will be the threat. mostly strong winds, maybe some damaging hail. slight chance of seeing tornadoes but this is the area that we're very concerned about. the front that calls on the rough weather the past several days is moving off on to the east coast. the tail end will cause heavy rain across the gulf coast and talk more about that in a little bit. dan, back over to you. >> wishing, rob, and everybody down south a slow weather day. we move on to the big story. that historic handshake between president obama and the president of cuba raul castro

the brother of fidel castro. the presidents of these two countries will meet face-to-face since the height of the cold war and abc's jim avila is in panama city covering it all. jim. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it was the handshake the world thought it might never see. a castro raoul, not fidel shaking hands with an american president. nothing substantive said but today the two will sit down and talk about the new era of relations between cuba and the u.s. not since dwight eisenhower was president and before the castros took over cuba have the two leaders of these two once enemies done that. it's happening at the summit of the americas in panama where cuba is being allowed to participate for the first time since the meetings began in the early '90s and expected to talk about the re-opening of embassies in both capitals the lifting of the embargo and taking cuba off the terror list. the state department is recommending they be taken off that list, the decision now in the president's hand and could

beating of a suspect caught on camera. officers apparently pummeling and kicking a man after a wild chase with a suspect on horseback. abc's brandi hitt has the very latest. >> reporter: this morning the fbi is launching an investigation into this brutal beating captured by knbc los angeles. as many as ten san bernardino county deputies now on paid administrative leave seen punching and kicking 30-year-old francis pusock more than 50 times in two minutes. it appears to be excessive to me based on what i saw in the video. >> reporter: the wild pursuit began thursday with an identity theft search warrant unrelated to him who fled the scene and allegedly stealing this horse. >> suspect being tased. suspect being tased. >> reporter: the terrain so rugged deputies had to be helicoptered in. he's seen putting his hands behind his back before the beating began. >> this is as bad if not worse

feds say planned on joining the u.s. army so he could kill american soldiers on behalf of isis. and millionaire real estate heir and murder suspect robert durst indicted by a federal grand jury in louisiana charged with illegal possession of a handgun. the indictment could make it more difficult to send durst to extradite him to california to face murder charges there for allegedly killing a longtime friend back in2000. durst was arrested on the eve of the final episode of the documentary "the jin on his life. now to newly released video of a deadly brawlout side of a walmart in arizona. watch as police officers and members of a large family engaged in a chaotic fistfight. at one point an officer is on the ground apparently in a struggle for his gun. he can be seen trying to crawl away after being shot. a second officer returned fire killing one man and wounding another. the officer shot in the leg. the march 21st incident is under investigation. finally, a 19-inning

>> a.j. hadsell went missing and sadly her body was found and leading to more questions about what happened to her and abc's gloria riviera has more. >> reporter: overnight officials confirming human remains found thursday in a vacant home belong to missing virginia teen anjelica a.j. hadsell. investigators are not releasing a cause of death. but police tell abc news they are actively searching for suspects and cannot rule out foul play. >> it's a tough situation for everybody. there's a lot of miss mixed emotion, anger, a lot of questions. >> reporter: the discovery brings an end to weeks of searches across over 100 miles for the college freshman last seen on march 2nd while visiting her family for spring break. in a statement released overnight, hadsell's mother thanking police despite tensions between the family and investigators. >> to us it seems like they're doing nothing.

>> reporter: this morning hadsell's father remains behind bars. charged with interfereing in the investigation when he broke into a different home last month. his mother says he was simply following leads of his own. >> as any father would, if you hear that your daughter may be in a house or being held or some of her belongings or at a location, any father is going to try to find out. >> reporter: norfolk police tell abc news his arrest is not believed to be linked to aj's death at this time. her father is being held without bail and is due back in court later this month. for "good morning america," gloria riviera, abc news, washington. >> and we move on to the story of a police officer who is seriously lucky to be alive. officer pete sules got into a gunfight and how everything changed for him in an instant. >> i started to make the approach toward his vehicle.

to nearby hospitals. these horrific crash scenes showing the potential devastation bus riders face made worse when there are no seat belts on board. in the u.s. only six states require all school buses to be equipped with seat belts. in the other 44 they're only mandatory for small buses under 10,000 pounds. to learn what happens inside these crashes, "gma" went to the scene of crash tests run by one of the nation's leading seat belt providers in the school bus industry. the first test capturing what happens when it collides with a wall at 30 miles an hour. >> oh, my gosh. that was terrifying. and next they create a rollover crash like the one in tulsa on wednesday. >> you can see that the two children that are belted that are in their compartments and they're safe. the children that are unrestrained they're flown throughout the vehicle and hit hard surfaces. >> reporter: the national
