good evening. and we begin here tonight with the breaking news. a fatal train derailment in the city of philadelphia. five people are dead. many others injured. at least six of them critically. you are looking at pictures now of the walking wounded. we also have a video of a rescue taking place. here it is. >> keep calling, okay? >> crawl forward, sir. come on, ma'am. >> a rescue on board that amtrak train that derailed tonight. this all happened in the port richmond area of philadelphia which is a scene of chaos and carnage tonight. from the air tonight, you can see the cars hurled onto their sides surrounded by a sea of flashlights searching for victims. on the ground, you can see the images of the wounded.

this is the aftermath of an amtrak train that overturned with more than 200 passengers on board on their way from washington d.c. to new york city. as of right now, five people have been confirmed dead. several others injured. some of them critically. the train derailed in the frankford section of philadelphia with seven cars overturning. still, most of the people were able to walk off the train themselves. >> it is an absolute mess. never seen anything like this in my life. the trains, seven cars including the engine are in various stages of disarray. turned over upside down on their side. we are still investigating what's going on. >> about 9:38 fire department personnel responded and encountered six overturned train. we immediately declared mass casualty event. >> i could see the train

shifting to the right. at first you think it's minor. suddenly the cars just got tossed. then the moment of chaos. the things all tumbling around you. an event like i mean everything had to stop and there was -- because our car had actually landed on the side. the bottom windows were in dirt. >> as many as four area hospitals have received injured passengers. that train was scheduled to arrive in new york city at 10:35 p.m. philadelphia's fire commissioner is calling the accident a mass casualty incident and the city's emergency operations center was activated. did you see people who were seriously injured? >> there were definitely people who had a lot of blood. there was a lot of stuff flying around. a lot of the seats came

dislodged. i think there were definitely people after i got off the train that were being carried away on stretchers. >> abc news learned the federal railroad administration is sending a team of investigators to the accident site though it would not confirm any other details about the accident. a former congressman, patrick murphy was a passenger on the train. >> we were going about 60, 70 miles per hour. and then, you know, something happened. it's at a bend here. it was a little surprising. >> as the former dockman kated, we don't know yet what caused this accident. you're looking at live aerials from the scene there in philadelphia. we can also tell you the ntsb will be sending a team. governor wolf has release add statement thanking the first
