good morning, america. and tragedy on the tracks. the desperate search for passengers still unaccounted for in that deadly amtrak derailment. and the new evidence uncovered by investigators. >> the train was traveling at approximately 106 miles an hour. >> the train going more than twice the speed when it derailed. the abc news exclusive thiss morning. hat the engineer behind the controls of that high-speed train is now saying. dangerous flooding. the south soaked by torrential rain, cars swept away, dozens saved from raging waters, this sinkhole opens up. more severe storms on the way. frightened father. a panicked dad's 911 call after leaving his baby in the car on the way to work. >> i left my 1-year-old baby in my suv by accident this morning. >> the race to save the child. and airborne at indy.

the three-time champion's spectacular crash, spinning out of control at over 230 miles an hour. the incredible video from inside the car. this morning, how he walked away without a scratch. and good morning america. we have a lot to get to this thursday. and we begin with all the fallout from that deadly train derailment. there's the aerial footage right now. new details coming in overnight. a brand-new satellite image from google. it shows the train off the track, the cars toppled. >> at least seven people now confirmed dead. more than 200 injured. we're learning the name of the engineer of the train that was going more than 100 miles an hour. well over the speed limit. we'll hear from his attorney in a moment. but first, paula faris starts

off our team coverage this morning. good morning paula. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the mayor calling the driver reckless and irresponsible. meanwhile, the ntsb acknowledging speed was a factor. they have a lot of long days ahead in regards to the investigation. it's been nearly 36 hours since the crash. for the families still missing loved ones a race against time. the race to find missing passengers intensified this morning. authorities are zeroing in on the speed of the trained this man, 32-year-old engineer brandon bostian. he was driving the train more than 100 miles an hour. even though the speed limit leading up to the curve is 50 miles an hour. >> the train was traveling at amox matly 106 miles an hour. >> reporter: the first car twisted into mangled heap killing at least seven passengers injuring 200.

>> there's people stuck in here. they can't get out. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows the moment of when the train rounds the bend. officials say bostian applied the emergency brakes just moments before the accident. decreasing from 106 to 102 miles an hour. it was too late. >> he remembers driving a train. beginning to that area generally. has absolutely no recollection of the incident or anything unusual. >> reporter: he's been requested but says he has no recollection of the accident or how it could have happened. >> i asked him if he had medical issues. he said he had none. >> reporter: the violent crash injuring 200 people and killing seven. including rachel jacobs a mother of a 2-year-old. she texted her husband an hour before the crash. >> i remember her as a wonderful young lady.

always full of life and energy. >> reporter: as well as dr. derrick griffith. dedicated to improving city schools. this morning the frantic search continues for the passengers unaccounted for. including bob gildersleeve a businessman from baltimore whose son is still searching for his dad. >> my name is mark. please help me find my dad. >> reporter: and questions whether this could have been prevented. there are systems that can limit a train'seed. parts of the northeast corridor contain it. but not in this part of the system. as of this morning, 42 remain hospitalized. 10 in critical condition. the engineer suffered a concussion and was banged up. he's been released from the hospital. george? >> thanks, paula. we're joined by brandon bostian's attorney, robert goggin. thank you for joining us. our client got praetty beat up. how is he doing? >> he has 15 staples in his

head. stitches in one leg. the other knee is immobilized. he has a concussion. on top of that he looked exhausted. >> mayor nutter, the naymayor of philadelphia calls mr. bostian reckless and irresponsible. >> we know the speed was excessive but the reason why is yet to be determined. >> has your client given you any information as to why the train was going so fast? >> he has not. i believe as a result of the concussion he has absolutely no recollection whatsoever of the events. i'm told that his memory is likely to return as the concussion symptoms subside. >> he spent six hours with the police. what did he tell them? >> everything he knew. he cooperated fully. >> what is the last thing he remembers? >> he remembers coming into the

curve. he remembers -- um -- attempting to reduce speed. thereafter, he was knocked out, thrown around just like all the other passengers in the train. >> he remembers deploying the emergency brake? >> he does not remember deploying the emergency brake. it was in fact deployed. the last thing he recalls is coming to, looking for his bag, getting his cell phone turning it on, and calling 911. >> had your client been drinking at all?ng. the police department requested a search warrant for his blood. he consented immediately. >> no drinking. >> they don't need the search warrant. no drinking no drugs, no medical conditions. nothing. >> how about speaking on the phone or texting? he's turned over his cell phone as well. >> his phone, was off and in his bag as is required by amtrak rules. >> has he ever had any kind of mishaps before as an edgengineer?

>> no, none. >> no explanation for what happened? >>ky give you nothing. you'll have to wait for his memory to come back or, other fact be ascertained by the ntsb investigation. >> when will he be meeting again with investigators? >> when they ask. >> what does he want the victims to know? >> we didn't discuss that. i can tell you that he was distraught as helearned of the devastation. >> mr. goggin, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you. >> all right, george. back to the scene now. and new questions about safety on the rails. abc's david kerley is there and david, i can imagine that the ntsb is anxious to talk to the engineer. >> reporter: absolutely, robin. we now know what happened. speed was involved here. twice the limit on the corner just on the other side of those

built buildings. the question is why. i just spoke with a member from the ntsb board who is here about what they want to do what they want to learn from that engineer. >> we have not interviewed the engineer. we look forward to that opportunity. it's not unusual for somebody who has been through a traumatic event to some memory loss at least short term memory loss. >> reporter: will they speak to him today? it's a possibility. that's unlikely. they may wait a day or two until he recoverers a little bit more. you mentioned infrastructure. that is a with some of the rails. paula mentioned positive train control. all rails are supposed to visit by the end of this year. the ntsb does not believe they'll meet that deadline. it's the rail telling the train, you're going too fast and it slows it down. it's not on that piece of track

after viafore's death. >> i saw him struggling. he was trying to find out how to pad tl way. >> reporter: she didn't tell reporters that it felt good knowing he was going to die. this was her only way out. viafore's body has never been found. prosecutors aing she did it all for two life insurance policies that could benefit her a total of $250,000. and talked about what she could possibly do with the money. this morning, graswald's lawyers plan to challenge the alleged confessions. they say much like the smiling pictures shed online after her fiance's death the statements may be the product of a cultural difference. a language barrier, or worse. >> we'll find out what happened. whether they were volunteer. coerce coerced, forced. it will all come out. >> reporter: graswald hasn't yet entered plea. her bail is set at $3 million.

jummy: it is still unclear when regular service will return to amtrak's northeast corridor following the crash in philadelphia. service is from washington to philadelphia, but not to new york. a house fire on lake slot way is a total loss after a fire. firefighters suffered minor injuries when the roof collapsed. the news continues on newschannel 8 with "good morning washington."
