reports of tornadoes. 10 in oklahoma and 17 in texas. leaving behind miles of destruction. this morning, in mine ral wells -- residents cleaning up after a reported tornado tore through town. >> debris flew up in the air. big black shingles and such. >> reporter: buildings taking major damage. including this church. >> it's scary. >> reporter: in austin pieces of this hotel fly through the air. this tornado touching down 100 miles outside san antonio. >> we're just thankful it wasn't worse than what it is. >> reporter: this morning, residents waiting for first light to really get a chance to assess the damage. meanwhile, the police chief telling us that despite all the destruction, no one was hurt. george? >> thank you, phillip. let's go to ginger with more on

the flooding danger. >> that's the danger this morning. 4 to 8 ichlgs of rain from colorado to north texas and oklahoma. it's still happening this morning. southeast oklahoma arkansas. that's where we find the flash flood warnings. if you're in red, change your plans this morning. don't drive. you don't need to. it is going to be bad for a couple of hours. then it will sink to the southeast. more storms back to the west. the potential for more damaging wind, hail, and tornadoes. we'll have much more coming up. now the cruise ship that ran aground more than 3500 people stuck off the coast of bermuda. matt gutman joins us with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. overnight, those passengers said they initially panicked as they felt that ship lurch when it plowed into the coral reef. this morning, dive teams are back out inspecting the ship. until they give it the green

light, that boat is not going anywhere. this morning, the "norwegian dawn" stopped. nearly 3500 people on board left high and dry. >> we felt the ship shudder for maybe about 10 15 seconds. and then all of a sudden there was an abrupt stop. you could tell the ship had stopped moving. >> reporter: the ship losing all power after leaving bermuda tuesday night, reportedly getting stuck on part of a coral reef. rachel thinking they might have to abandon ship. >> my family and i wept to our cabins. got personal items, our cell phones and passports. >> reporter: the power restored. but the ship still stuck. smaller boats swarming the ship inspecting it for damage. this tugboat tugging out to try to nudge the ship loose. six hours later with high tide coming in, this 1,000-foot-long city on the sea was dislodged

and moved to a location nearby where it anchored. the ship's steering system suffered a temporary malfunction, causing the ship to sail slightly off course hitting the seabed. adding everyone on board was safe. no fuel leaked. passengers on board concerned about what a ps going to happen if the ship can actually set sail. >> i don't want to continue on this ship into open seas. because the response time within two mile of shore was hours. the response time in open seas i don't even want to think about. >> reporter: and that concern is understandable understandable. there's 800 mile of open ocean between bermuda and boston. the good news this morning, the ship is back at port in bermuda. everybody is safe. >> thank you, matt. we turn to the largest consumer recall in u.s. history. nearly 34 million air bags recalled because they're prone to explode. is blamed for five

deaths in the united states and more than 100 injuries. david kerley has the latest from washington. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a doubling of this recall. millions of americans could be driving with air bags that could explode into shrapnel in an accident. 1 in 7 cars on the road needing its air bag replaced because of this. the recall a move that the japanese air bagmaker takata has been fighting. >> up until now, takata has refused to acknowledge that their air bags are defective. that changes today. >> reporter: nearly 34 million cars from 11 carmakers. takata believes that moisture in high humidity areas is getting into the canisters and changing the chemical compound causing the stronger explosions. they can shatter the canister sending shrapnel into the bag

and into 2 cory lost sight after his air bag exploded. can you tell us why you're not expapding the recall? this morning, alarming details about the bag inflaters already recalled. the company tested more than 30,000. and nearly 1 out of every 100 september shrapnel flying when it was ignited. the government says it could take a couple of years to replace all the air bags recalled. it's not sure if the new inflaters used as part of the recall will be safe many the long run. it will test the replacements too. >> there will be a test to open sure that the final remedy will be safe. period. >> reporter: takata which for so long refused to acknowledge the scope of the problem says it's pleased to reach the agreement with the u.s. government. u.s. authorities will be independent matly involved in the recall. and whether those replacement bags will work in the long term.

>> reporter: fortunately, mother and child were rescued. on monday alexian lain said he was in fear more his life and his wife and daughter's lives. >> thank you very much. we turn to a big break in the case of the brazen bank heist in london where thieves made off with $300 million in jewels and other valuables. police have arrested nine people in connection with the crime. perhaps the most shocking thing about the suspects is their age. >> reporter: this was an audacious $300 million jewel heist. it looks highly professional. cutting through metal shutters. penetrating a concrete bunker wall. it all sounds worthy of clooney and pitt. this caper was less "motions 11" and more like "the expendables."

able to aid life guard ifs a way we never thought possible. >> reporter: all right. so we're going to show you how this works. right now, we have a distressed swimmer in the water about 100 yards out. we'll put this drone to the test against jack a seasoned life guard. whoever can reach the swimmer first wins. are you ready? is everybody ready to see this? all right, on your mark, get set, go. okay. so right now, jack seems to be tied with the drone. once he hits the water, the drone appears to be reaching the distressed swimmer who is joe, another life guard, and, he was there in roughly five seconds, you guys. you can see that jack who has saved thousands of lives. he's a seasoned vet. he's a seasoned life guard and he's not halfway there yet. you can see how lifesaving a dren could be in this kind of

would be capable of doing anything like that. this whole experience and partnering with val shows me anyone is capable of doing anything. you have to have the willingness to go out and try. >> third time's the charm for you. >> fourth actually. >> you and rumer seemed to have a connection from the beginning. what was the key for you to bring out the best in her the confidence we saw? >> the first time i met her, there was such a -- there was like this -- sense of gratitude in her eyes and everything that she did and everything she said to me and, you know she was just so excited to do this show. i asked her the first meeting, i was like are you sure? it's going to be tough. just how genuinely enthusiastic she was. she said i want to learn how the dance and hopefully make gnaw friend. that's all i want. ten weeks later, we got a trophy. it feels amazing. >> you're all friends here. wonderful to see family and

friends that you have here and there. and rumer, your parents, they -- they have a special message for you. take a look. >> aw. >> you did it, kid. and i love you. you work sod hard. i'm so proud of you. and, i -- what else? what can we say? >> get back out there. >> you heard him. get back out there. >> oh that's into cute. >> that's awesome. >> i think you surprised a lot of people riker. impressed len. fred astaire with a modern flair. how did you get the mix of the modern and classic? >> i think allison brought that to the table. trying to be traditional and come up with something new about the same time. allison was so brilliant at that. it kind of -- keeping it traditional and adding our flair. >> kudos to all the dancers, the pro dancers. you do a terrific job each and every season.

they wanted more intensity out of riker. how were you able to tap into that and make that happen? >> you know obviously from week one, with riker, he had such a natural ability to dance. and he just understood the movement so well. the musicality. we adapted so well to the fun dances and energetic things pop to pull a deeper side of him at first was tough. because of the struggle of finding that inside of him, that's what was real on the dance floor. i think us trying to find that inside him shind on the dance floor. he did an amazing job with all of his dances. every single one of them were so different. dynamic. i'm so proud of his journey. it was up credible. the entire season. >> and sharna you pulled so much out of noah as well. we were all blown away be the final dance. so much emotion. some of your signature lifts. a montage of some of them here. >> yeah.

>> yes! >> whoa yeah! >> one big arm right there. >> there it is. >> so epic. >> it is. it is epic. just amazing to watch. and, then we want to know what was the experience like for you. is this dancing thing something you're going stick with? >> stick with? no i'm done after this. dancing is not something i do. that's what -- i'm so impressed that i came this far because i thought three weeks at best. and, this is proof of how incredible sharna is as a dancer a teacher, an artist that she took me just with my injuries and with the fact that i have never danced before and -- got us this far. i think it's amazing what she's accomplished. >> and tell us how you did that, sharna. it's wonderful each and ere week. the back stories we saw. and the way you are able to --

man, you can dance, noah. >> he doesn't believe me yet. >> how did you do that? >> he really can. every week was a different challenge to find out what that dance was for noah. sometimes it was more difficult that are others. what was so difficult was he aed me to tell his story through dance. there's nothing more truthful than that. people saw him overcoming the struggles every week. it was beautiful to be a part of. >> it was wonderful. emp allowed their emotions to come out. at home i gotta tell you, with the popcorn, and wine watching you all, it was so much fun. and you even shed a tear my friend. it was the first time on camera we saw you shed a tear val. >> this season. and it was the first time for a lot of things for me. and i, like i said i feel like she made me feel comfortable enough to open up and be myself and not be so guarded.

i have to thank her for it. she's a beautiful person. yeah it's cool. >> you real opened up as well rumer. talked about how you felt awkward and gotten bullied online for your looks. this really changed the way you see yourself or did it? i should ask, i shouldn't say. >> i mean i think one of the most incredible things about this whole show and being on this show is the incredible response that i got from people about sharing my story. and that's who this maer rorball is is for. everyone who ever felt like they were not good felt like they couldn't accomplish something. you can. even if you don't feel like you're beautiful every day or you feel like you look bad, you can do something. you work hard put your whole heart into it you totally can. >> you did that. breaking news. incoming message right now. >> rumer, vam, congratulations on winning the trophy.

hours. the cool thing about it is we have towels head bands, hats. mission has up the an unbelievable job of covering the whole body. you go kout side to run is put a hat on. once it's wet, it covers you from the sun. it keeps your body at a cooler level. add water. like oatmeal. >> add water. and drink water. we have to stay hydrated. >> for sure. >> looking forward to the indy 500 coming up soon. >> a big weekend of racing. the indy. our race in charlotte. monaco. >> and the final four so to speak with the nba. >> the playoffs right now. >> golden state winning last night. what do you think of the final pour? >> this is the most exciting time of the year for us basketball players as a fan. as someone who has been there before. this is the best teams. number one and two ranked teams in both conferences playing each

redshirting in grade school is happening more and more. parents gaming the system so their kids can have a competitive edge. this little leaguer in west virginia held back by his dad. >> got everything, helmet glove, right? >> yep, it's in the bag. >> reporter: troy anthony repeated kindergarten. the boy's future as an athlete was key. >> it was a big factor. i would be lying if i said it wasn't. >> one concern about redshirting, it sets a precedent for a doid play's puts pressure on them to do something they might not want to do. >> i hate to be cast as a sports villain, you know what i mean. if he chooses to be a participant in sports and wants to pursue we want to give him an opportunity to excel in sports. i think that i have done that so far. >> reporter: sports professionals are not convinced it gives an advantage. >> if you're the smallest one,

you have to be faster. that might teach you how to be a superior athlete. a better athlete. a better player. if you're always the biggest player, there's not as much impetus for you to make those creative solutions. >> reporter: and there are other things to consider as well. a study done by researchers at texas and usc finds that kids who redshirted for any reason were twice as likely to drop out of high school. >> that's huge. >> back in the day, if kids were going the get bet, they played up. that paradigm is completely shifted. >> i never heard that. a lot more dancing ahead. they're getting ready to perform the big number right here in times square.
