we hear the 911 calls from those twin attacks. >> there's a girl whose hands been bitten off by a shark. >> those heroes that saved her life only on "gma" this morning. good morning, america. we want to get right to that breaking news a deadly balcony collapse in berkeley california. t.j. holmes with what wenow right now. good morning, t.j. >> some awful details coming in to us. five five people are dead and at least eight injured. some of them critically. pictures we're getting in to us. the balcony that did collapse. police got this call a short time ago, a matter of hours ago and don't know what caused the collapse or what the people on that balcony were doing but, again, at least eight injured and we're told some of those wounds they say critical but using the phrase they are

life-threatening. four-story apartment building. it was four stories up is how high the balcony was. i can let you know of course berkeley out there, u.c. berkeley a lot of students live close by. we do not know whether or not they were students at the school but this apartment complex is right next door, right adjacent to the campus but awful details. we're following this closely and some of these new pictures coming in to us tragic five dead, eight right now critically wounded. some of those wounds we're told life-threatening. >> t.j. thanks very much. all right, george now to those dangerous storms and flooding stretching from texas to new york. this was the scene at wrigley field in chicago last night. [ sirens ] >> what you're hearing are tornado sirens blaring. the stadium cleared out and now more flooding on the way. tropical storm bill making landfall in texas this morning. we have full team coverage starting with abc's alex perez who starts us off in chicago. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy. take a look at this.

the chicago river spilling over its banks here. an entire walkway completely flooded. in downtown chicago a frightening sound we don't hear often, tornado sirens. [ sirens ] >> reporter: tornado sirens blaring across chicago. watch as this funnel cloud starts forming into a waterspout over lake michigan captured on cell phone video from a viewer recording in downtown chicago. torrential rain and furious wind made mayhem for blackhawks fans trying to get to the united center for the final game of the stanley cup. after all that rain major street flooding. >> that's my car in the middle of a lake. >> reporter: overnight crews worked to clear storm drains. >> stuck in the middle of lake shore. they'll probably have to tow the car. >> reporter: this wall cloud rolling into the windy city bringing the downpour. in cleveland cars creeping along i-90 after they were hit hard with heavy rainfall. and to the south in oklahoma

four inches falling in just three hours. made for flash flooding some drivers plowed through while many others stranded. and the cleanup from all that flash flooding just getting under way this morning. the morning commute could be a headache for a lot of people. amy. >> all right, alex perez, thank you. from that severe weather in chicago to that powerful tropical storm making landfall this morning taking aim at the hard-hit south. ginger is standing by for the very latest. first abc's rob marciano is in galveston, texas where they are waiting, bracing for bill. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, amy. the winds and now rains have picked up. the waves rolling into the seawall. that pier which was taken out by hurricane carla re-opened in 2012. surge not a big issue. it's going to be the rain. new video coming out of austin the memorial day floods that not only hit houston but austin. one of many businesses damaged during that flood.

that did what we're concerned about with tropical storm bill. the inland flooding. as you know the majority of fatales that happened during a tropical system happened during inland flooding. >> so true. thanks for being there. not just galveston, houston, austin so many on alert because that tropical storm is less than 50 miles from the coast. so we're going to watch it throughout the day take aim make landfall but as rob said the rain is what we're concerned about. there are tropical storm warnings from corpus christi to houston. the track through wednesday takes it up west of dallas the heaviest rain will fall to the east because of the way that the moisture pumps from the gulf. watch this too. record high temperatures south carolina, north carolina that big ridge of high pressure driving the moisture and it's why it doesn't stop in texas. we have to look through wednesday, thursday into missouri parts of illinois because the rainfall will be in the three to five-inch range. you could see more than half a foot in the green so parts of places that got 300% of their average the last two months will do it again. >> houston already hit so hard. okay ginger thanks very much.

we turn to a major blow against al qaeda. their second in command, the head of the terrorist group in yemen one of the world's most wanted man killed by a u.s. air strike and brian ross here with the latest. >> reporter: american officials this morning are calling this a huge victory against the al qaeda group which has been the most active in trying to target the u.s. with repeated plots aimed at american passenger jets. the comfortable pace cage early today from al qaeda itself. announcing that the leader of its thriving operation in yemen, nasir al wuhayshi had been killed in a u.s. air strike. last seen in this video, huge open air meeting with his fighters in yemen last year nasir al wuhayshi had emerge the as the most determined to target the u.s. it was his al qaeda bombmakers who were behind the repeated but failed efforts to bring down u.s. passenger jets using bombs hidden in underwear and in printer cartridges able to easily get by airport security. al wuhayshi who once served as

osama bin laden's personal aide had been one of america's most wanted terrorists with a $10 million reward for him dead or alive. in announcing his death this morning al qaeda also announced his successor to take over the terror group. officials say despite this one killing this arm of al qaeda remains a major threat to the u.s. and commercial aircraft especially since the evil genius bombmaker remains alive, george and still plotting. >> but it does come after that successful attack against a leader in libya, as well. >> thanks very much. turning to that naacp leader under fire for pretending to be african-american. rachel dolezal is speaking out this morning after resigning from her post and steve osunsami has the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning shgs the center of this controversy she has ignited an important conversation about racial identity in this country. just hours after saying good-bye

to the naacp, the group's controversial chapter president is seen here in smiling photos from "the daily mail" in her resignation on facebook she never addresses claims she's lying about her race saying it is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and naacp that i step aside from the presidency. many of her former supporters say she's offended she's refusing to answer that directly. >> it has damaged a lot of relationships. for some they will never be able to move past it. >> reporter: we're learning she did at one point identify as a white woman when it graduate school at historically black howard university where she filed a discrimination lawsuit against the school claiming they kept her from teaching positions because she was caucasian. the case was dismissed and howard has no comment this morning. but it appears since then she's traveled on her road to blackness. >> i do consider myself to be black.

>> reporter: she is seen speaking to a college student about her experiences as a black woman. >> i feel even though other people are going to oh these not only white -- >> reporter: this is causing some to question her motivation. >> reporter: there's a debate over whether these transracial and the way are some transgender. >> people have to do what with people who run right into conflict with our long held beliefs about what natural real categories are when it comes to race or gender. >> on social media the idea is setting some people off. so if i say i'm transracial and call myself white do you think employers will finally call me back? and transracial isn't a real thing and it's degrading to transpeople. the naacp national office says she's done great work as a chapter president and they're not at all concerned about the color of her skin or whatever

she's done to her hair. george. >> okay steve, thanks very much. we get the latest on that prison break. the woman charged with helping vicks escape was in court monday and hearing from her lawyer and gio benitez on the scene in upstate new york. good morning gio. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. it's now day 11 in this manhunt and the woman at the center of it all in the slammer herself. this morning, for the first time we're hearing from joyce mitchell's attorney as the prison worker accused of aiding two escaped vicks sits in a cell wearing jailhouse attire. >> let's say she's very upset. she's distraught. >> reporter: mitchell is accused of bringing tools into the prison helping richard matt and david sweat break out allegedly agreeing to drive t the getaway car before pulling out at the last minute. law enforcement sources telling abc news that investigators are now looking into allegations that mitchell may have helped the convicts escape because she believed they would help kill her husband and run away with her. though prosecutors

comment. sources say the case of the missing prisoners is growing cold. this as investigators follow more than a thousand tips having already searched 13 square miles with no sign of either convict. >> these guys are not survivalists. they have no skill sets in the woods. either they're long gone or really contained within this perimeter. these guys are vicious animals. >> reporter: but will they ever be caught? prison breaks have both fascinated and terrified. 1962 alcatraz three escaped never caught. 1977 kansas a man escapes and isn't captured until just last year. experts say don't underestimate sweat and matt's escape plot. >> these guys have a well devised plan. they put together a pretty good deal here. it took them a long time. >> reporter: as for joyce mitchell she's pleaded not guilty. prosecutors say more charges are possible but they won't say what those are, george. >> thank you, gio. now time to go to dan harris for the other top stories starting with a massive wildfire. >> good morning. that's exactly right.

this morning two-thirds of the state of alaska under fire warnings. one fire has destroyed as many as 45 homes north of anchorage. hundreds of others have been evacuated. the highway connecting anchorage and fairbanks now closed. the flames have now burned about 13 square miles. we have new details about those exploding air bags blamed for at least seven deaths. honda can now expanding its recall to include some of the most popular cars on the road. the recall now includes more than a million civics made between 2001 and 2005 and accords between 2003 and 2007. the air bags made by takata can explode sending debris flying through the car. to politics now, jeb bush is heading to new hampshire one day after announcing the obvious he is in fact running for president. he accuses democrats of planning what he calls a no suspense primary for a no change election. and he took direct aim at hillary clinton. >> not one of us deserves the job by right of resume party,

good morning, america. right now, new details about that breaking news the deadly balcony collapse. you are looking at the scene in berkeley, california this morning, at least five killed. eight injured. some of them critically. the balcony was on the top of a four-story building and that building is less than two block as way from the u.c. berkeley campus. graduation was last month but there are summer classes in session right now. we're going to be staying with the story all morning long as new details and video come in. that's right. good morning, america. very dari pictures there in california. and down south as well. >> following up on that twin shark attacks. the two wounded teenagers recovering this morning hearing the frantic 911 calls for the first time. the heroes are here to speak with us. first abc's matt gutman has the latest from oak island, north carolina. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. from a sheriff's office patrol boat off the coast of north carolina, no

attacks happened just up the beach from here and this has become a significant public safety issue here in north carolina. but those sheriff's office officials and others credit those heroes you mentioned with saving those kids' lives. the first harrowing moments after those shark attacks captured in these 911 calls. >> hi we're on oak island and there's a girl whose hand has been bitten off by a shark. >> do you know are any of the fingers completely amputated? >> it looks like her entire hand is gone. >> reporter: one shark biting the girl repeatedly in waist deep water in oak island north carolina. bystanders rushing in to help the girl from ashborough north carolina. emts try desperately to stop the bleeding. >> we need an ambulance right away. >> reporter: shockingly just two miles away and a little over an hour later another attack. this time a teenage boy on vacation from colorado springs. >> the shark took his left arm

and he just took off running and started screaming. >> reporter: randy milligan on the beach still traumatized from the images he just can't shake. >> i just start wrapping his arm and started screaming. >> reporter: the two victims airlifted to a nearby hospital. the boy lost his arm below the shoulder. the girl lost her left hand below her elbow. this morning both are in good condition. sheriff john ingram credited bystanders with saving those kids' lives. we joined him on the water yesterday. would you yourself swim in these waters or let your kids swim today? >> today? >> reporter: yeah. >> no. >> reporter: we were right there as his team spotted two sharks in the water earlier. we just got notice the helicopter had a shark sighting in the water. aboard that helicopter is a deputy authorized to shoot a shark if necessary.

a beachgoer snapping this picture. shark fins right in the shallows. now, the sheriff's office concedes that finding those particular sharks in these waters is even harder than finding a needle in a haystack and these are migratory animals so very likely they've moved on which poses a threat to other beaches up and down this coastline. but if these guys do see those particular sharks they are authorized to haul them in and if necessary shoot them. george. >> thank you, matt. we're joined by motty along with her brother chris and her brother-in-law shane. thanks for being with us this morning. and, you have been a paramedic for almost 12 years but were just on vacation with your family right there on the beach. tell us what you saw and heard. >> well we were just playing football in the water and a lady came running to us telling us to get out of the water. there's a shark attack. i immediately went to work. i got some tourniquets kind of

made out of string i was able to find and stopped the hemorrhaging from two of the limbs and then i basically just kind of stabilized her, got i.v. from somebody in the crowd, gave her some fluids and waited for fire and ems to show up. >> these are real very veer injuries. >> yes. >> and then you got the tourniquets from a boogie board in a nearby tent. >> i think in the pictures you can see the boogie board at her head and used the string from that and somebody took string from one of their tents and gave it to me for her leg until we could get fire on scene with the properly tourng yet and put the appropriate equipment on and took mine off. >> have you ever dealt with a shark attack before. >> no, i can't say that i have. >> had you had any warning that there was any kind of shark on the beach or around the beach? >> not at all. it was a completely normal day for everybody like there was no sign of that that -- well, that i know of that we -- any of us noticed. it was very surprising.

>> and have you had a chance to talk to the girl or her family since the attack? >> no i mean she's going through a lot right now and the last thing she needs is a bunch of people brothering her so i tried to give her her distance. she has a long way to go and is a strong girl. i'm proud of what all she's been through and -- >> she's lucky you were in the right place at the right time. thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> cool calm and collected. >> i can't even imagine that situation. thank goodness they were there and knew what to do. thousand to a sheriff's deputy who is under fire this morning for tasering a 13-year-old boy, police say the teen was resisting arrest and are defending the deputy's actions and neal karlinsky has that story. >> hey, hey. >> reporter: this morning, police say they will investigate this incident caught on tape. a san diego sheriff's deputy using his taser on a 13-year-old

boy. >> tased me. what the [ bleep ]. man. >> reporter: police say the boy was a runaway something he had done five times before and said the teen refused to listen to the deputy trying to bring him home. while being restrained the teen bit him hard. marks you can see here. that's when the deputy used his taser roughly 50,000 volts of electricity in some models reportedly twice. >> i think he bit the police officer because like he couldn't breathe. >> reporter: police say the deputy was just doing his job. >> use of force is never something pretty to watch. but when it's looped and shown over and over on the same clip and portrayed as the actual incident that misrepresents what happened. >> reporter: because he was tased the teen was checked at a local hospital and is reportedly doing fine. this morning he's been booked into juvenile hall on charges of resisting arrest. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, los angeles. >> all right, neal thanks so much for that. ginger i know you have video from a severe storm in

there right now. >> reporter: so comedian aziz ansa up with sociologist eric kleinen berg set out to put it out there and came out with data of their own and designed a massive project which included hundreds of interviews and focus groups done all over the world and then created their own form on reddit where thousands of messages help formed the basis for the conclusions in their new book the roo result an in-depth look at how much dating has change the from a generation ago and a breakdown of how people really behave online when looking for love with a road map. >> for single people i would say it's not only necessary but critical you use online as one option. >> reporter: they outlined some conclusions in "the new york times" on sunday. one, people filter too much. too much specific about what they want. when research shows that people who really don't know what they want. two, picture does not make perfect. there is too much emphasis placed on what people look like.

and, three we all need to go slower. give a relationship a chance to grow and not to give up too quickly thinking there's someone more perfect out there online. all right. so apparent i have to rethink my profile pic. in that "the new york times" piece they emphasized online dating sites are a place to meet people not to actually date them. anthropologists saying these sites should be called introducing services and should save some vetting when you see the person in person would seem to make sense, amy. >> human contact. it's really you know something. yeah. i mean hello. so we're happy here to have aziz ansari with us. retirement homes and different places and we gave them a bunch of doughnuts and asked them to talk to us about their relationships and what's interesting is people in the older generations that we talked to they would marry people that lived pretty close to them. all these crazy studies show people would marry people who lived one out of 12 people in philadelphia marryied someone in the same building. >> and married young. >> married very young and date people few months the parent was meet and say, yeah this person won't murder you and they would get married. it wasn't this search for, oh this -- >> perfection? perfect soul mate. >> yeah. >> it's a big difference and i think that's why a lot of people now are frustrated trying to find this perfect thing. >> that doesn't exist. >> maybe, may or may mott. >> all these people think they found the answers. the key question could be do you like horror movies? do you buy that jo. >> they said like people fill out all those profiles and make u answer million questions. are there any questions that

seem to kind of predict that people end up doing well. it was random stuff like do you mike horror movies. agreeing on that ended up ending showing some success. ultimately all those dare for whatever those things do it doesn't really matter. ultimately just like meeting a person and realizing -- >> having a conversation. >> see if you can imbibe were them. i think you have all these questions, do you want someone with this that or whatever but what you're really looking for someone you can hole and watch a few hours of a critically aclaimed drama with and go to bed. >> aziz you talk a lot about first impressions. we all place too much on them. i liked your analogy you compare them to music. we might hear a song and think, ah, eighth okay but what you do you know before you know it we're singing it and becomes one of the ones we can't stop singing. >> yeah we're all like a drake song you know. you first hear it okay i've heard this before. >> what's your advice. >> keep listening to the people. like spend -- i feel people go

out once oh yeah he had a weird hat on or something and it's like all right, hang out with the person a little bit more. there's just so much science that shows the more time you spend with people. >> you think there's too much choice out there. >> that's the thing that people when we interviewed young people they said a lot. there's just so many options out there. so much choice and, again, a lot of science that shows like whenever there's more options it's actually harder to make a choice and when you do you're less satisfied. >> now you're told don't settle. don't settle. i have a question for you. you gave pretty bad examples of texts men have sent to women like the generic first text to a lady hey. can that ruin a relationship before it even gets started. >> it's not that it will like ruin a relationship but it's like okay it was interesting because we just looked at people's real phones and have like hundreds of women's phones that we looked at. when you see what dues are texting them a lot of it just like what are you doing?

feel your love and your guidance always. >> that's the guy who taught you your sense of humor, he's awesome. amy. >> you know my dad was always -- he's a tough guy, german scientist and i looked up to him my whole life and he was always my father and never my friend growing up which i thank him for immensely. i had a lot of friends and i needed a dad and he taught me how to be strong and taught me to be financially independent and gave me love to travel the world. a world traveler. i don't know what country he's in right now but i know he's not in the states and he always showed up. george kind of like what you were saying. he was there at my ballet recitals and gymnastic meets and most recently when i battled cancer. my dad no matter where he was for each round all eight rounds of chemo flew in and was there for me and my daughters and my family and he was the guy going and getting the groceries and picking my kids up from school and doing whatever i needed him to do so dad, thank you for all that you've been to me and all

that i know you still will be for my daughter as well? that's an important lesson for us with little kids be a father not a friend. >> that comes later. >> that comes later. you're my friend now. >> looks kridy young. is he my age? how old is he? >> he also got confused as my husband a lot. >> oh! >> thats. >> thank you, dad, for good genes. >> moving on now, we want to say -- >> i'd be dating quite a bit of an older man -- we have been mistaken. so my dad and my stepdad, want to thank them both. my dad especially because he taught me the value of a smile. he can walk in any room and change the atmosphere and i think knowing that from when i was a baby he'd say give me a smile all the way up to now the power of what you can be to other people kind of like george was saying is so important. and my stepdad is the guy who sent cookies in the mail to college. like my mom doesn't do that.

you know. he embraced us. his family embraced us. i can't imagine being in my mid-20s like he was when he took on two kids and becoming our father so thank you to karl and bob. they were both there on our wedding day. >> beautiful. >> that's great. >> and really such -- at this point in our lives such a special thing to have two. really really lucky in thank you, guys for sharing that. before we leave i want to give a hat tip to my father dr. jay harris a breast cancer doctor and saved thousands of lives. that's me giving him a tonsil exam and me being sul ki in the corner. >> there's your smile. >> and me smiling. it took a while to get to the smile part. he told me compassionate is not a weakness it's a strength. on a more mundane note he showed me if you prevend to be completely useless at household chores nobody will ask you to do anything ever. which has been just huge for me so dad -- >> you made that one up too. >> your first father's day.
